Makeup Geek Last Dance

Makeup Geek Last Dance

Love the new Makeup Geek packaging!

In a previous post, Two Makeup Geek Eyeshadows that are Dupes for Each Other?, I compared Homecoming to “Last Dance” which seemed to be identical. Turns out they were! I had been sent a mislabeled Homecoming instead.

Stashmatters commented suggesting I contact Makeup Geek and I did. I sent them an email with a link to my original post, and got a response right away:

“We are very sorry about this, you are absolutely right, you have 2 Homecomings there! We’re going to resend you a last dance. Hope this helps.”

They shipped me a new eyeshadow right away for free. Here’s my new, actual Last Dance:

The shadow is a very pretty and unique shade that is rather complex. In the pan it looks more like a dark purple, but applied, its more of a purpley toned brown. Its also a little iridescent with a purple sheen. I did a very pretty smokey eye look with it that was also daytime appropriate. Its really wearable.

I thought it was awesome of Makeup Geek to send me a new shadow. I was really impressed with their customer service.

Two Makeup Geek Eyeshadows that are Dupes…for Each Other?

Makeup Geek Last Dance and Homecoming

One of these things is not a lot like the other

The other day I posted about my favourite Makeup Geek eyeshadows. I’m a big fan of MUG and really enjoyed the eyeshadows I’ve ordered. Of course, like any brand, there have been some “misses” but nothing as peculiar as these two shades: Last Dance and Homecoming.

Makeup Geek Last Dance and Homecoming

Although Homecoming is described on the MUG site as “medium brown with gold shimmer” and Last Dance as “satin medium to deep plummy brown”, these two shades seem to be identical. Check out the swatches and see if you can tell which is which:

Swatches: Makeup Geek Last Dance & Homecoming

Swatches: Last Dance & Homecoming

Now, I’m not sure if this was an accidental mis-labelling situation? I feel like these might both be Homecoming. If anyone else has ordered either (or both) of these shades please let me know what you think. Are these just really similar or could this have been a mistake?

UPDATE: I emailed Makeup Geek with a link to this post, and they confirmed I had been sent two Homecomings. They sent me a new Last Dance right away for free which was super nice of them! To see the REAL Last Dance, check out this post.

As always, thanks so much for reading!

Favourite Makeup Geek Eyeshadows

favorite makeup geek eye shadows
Although I really like the Makeup Geek eyeshadows, it can be tricky purchasing them because your only option is ordering them online, which means you don’t get to see the colours in person or swatch them. I have quite a number of MUG shadows, and most of them are awesome but some of the shades, once I received them, didn’t really work on me so much.

I thought a post about the MUG eyeshadows that work really well on fair skin might be helpful for others contemplating which shades to order. I generally prefer cooler toned shadows and I do find that the MUG shadows can tend to be on the warmer side. Here are the 9 shadows that are my favourite of all of the ones I’ve ordered:

  • White Lies:  a matte white
  • Vanilla Bean: a creamy beige that is a close dupe for MAC Brule. You can see I’ve hit pan on this one.
  • Rockstar: a very unique shade, described ad “pale silver with purple iridescence”
  • Moondust: a slightly shimmery silver taupe
  • Barcelona Beach: a creamy matte, sandy brown (pretty neutral)
  • Hipster: a very natural looking, light, shimmery taupe. absolutely love this one!
  • Prom Night: a cool, purpley-gray taupe that is very similar to MAC Satin Taupe. One of my favourite eyeshadows from any brand.
  • Taupe Notch: a neutral, satiny taupe
  • Pretentious: a wearable bronze, even for fair skin, that isn’t overly warm

Can you tell I like neutrals?

These super pigmented, creamy eyeshadow pans sell for an amazing $5.99 USD, which at the current exchange rate is about $7 CAD. They ship via Canada Post so I have never incurred any additional duties or customs charges. Shipping is less than $10 USD and is very fast. I could definitely recommend ordering from the Makeup Geek site.

I purchased both my Z Palettes from the Makeup Geek site as well. The small black palette, which I ordered to keep my favourites in, was $14.99 USD, and the large pink Z palette (which holds 27 MUG e/s pans) is $20 USD.

I hope this helps you if you’re are trying to decide which MUG shadows to get. Have you tried the MUG shadows yet? What are your favourites?

A Few New Makeup Geek Eyeshadows

new makeup geek eyeshadowsMy very last post of 2014! I’m sure everyone’s going to be thinking about makeup today as you’re getting ready for New Year’s Eve. I love new years makeup. Its a great excuse to try out something crazy you wouldn’t’ wear everyday, like a black smokey eye, silvery iridescent shadows, glitter liner or dramatic false lashes!

Speaking of eyeshadow…I recently ordered some of the Makeup Geek blushes, and I couldn’t resist ordering a few of the new eyeshadow shades that have come out as well. I already have quite a few of the MUG shadows and I like them a lot. They are good quality shadows in a huge range of shades at what seems like an impossibly low price. I should really do a post on my favourite MUG shadows.

Some of the new shades that caught my eye were:

  • Beaches & Cream: a matte peachy-cream shade
  • Rockstar: a really unique, duochrome type of shade, described as “pale silver with purple iridescence”
  • Barcelona Beach: a matte, medium cool-toned brown
  • Hipster: a beautiful taupe with a slightly shimmery finish (but not glittery, more of a sheen)
  • Preppy: a light, matte, cool brown with green undertones

L-R: Beaches & Cream, Rockstar, Barcelona Beach, Hipster, and Preppy

I’m loving all five of these shades! I especially love Hipster. If you are a taupe fan, you need Hipster in your life. I’m also surprised at how much I like Rockstar. It looks really good all over the lid. I used Preppy with it in the crease and added a black liquid liner for a really pretty 1950s eye look.

MUG eyeshadow pans are an amazingly priced $5.99 USD. I highly recommend the MUG site for inexpensive and super fast shipping to Canada.

Which Makeup Geek shades are your favourite?

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for reading!

Makeup Geek Blushes for Fair Skin

Makeup Geek Blushes for fair skin

Makeup Geek Blushes!

I was already a fan of the Makeup Geek (MUG) eyeshadows, so I think I was as excited as everyone else when the blushes came out earlier this year. I finally got around to placing an order. I can’t believe it took me so long! I love the MUG packaging, and these blush compacts are no exception. To me, they are the perfect size and shape – sleek, lightweight and compact. Love the gun metal finish and the clear lid so I can see what the shade is without opening them!

I looked at a lot of the reviews and swatches online before deciding on four shades that I thought would work for me. I have very pale skin with cool, pink undertones. I ordered:

  • Smitten
  • Honeymoon
  • Spell Bound
  • Bliss
Makeup Geek blushes Smitten, Honeymoon, Spell Bound, Bliss

Clockwise from top right: Smitten, Honeymoon, Spell Bound, Bliss

L-R: Bliss, Smitten, Spell Bound, Honeymoon

Makeup Geek blush Smitten

Smitten was the one blush that looked a bit iffy once I saw it in person because I initially thought it may be a little too orangey and might not work on me. Some bloggers have described this shade as “apricot.” Once applied it totally works though! I think because the pigmentation is light and subtle (but buildable). I didn’t get a big crazy dark swatch of peach across my cheek if you know what I mean. I love the soft matte finish of this blush and I think the light peachy shade compliments fair skin very well.

Makeup Geek blush Honeymoon

Honeymoon seems to have sparkles/glitter in it in the pan and even when I first swatched it, but once applied on my cheeks with the Real Techniques Blush Brush, it isn’t sparkly or glittery at all. So don’t be put off by that. A neutral, peachy-brown shade, its very pretty, natural and a little bit glowy on fair skin. It was also the sheerest of the four.

Makeup Geek blush Spell Bound

Spell Bound

Out of the four, Spell Bound is my favourite. A muted pinkey-brown with subtle plum undertones, this matte blush is right up my alley!

Makeup Geek blush Bliss

Bliss reminds me of the MAC Sheertone blushes – very light and subtle and perfect on lighter skin tones. Out of the four, I would say Bliss would be the one that would likely not work on darker skintones because it probably wouldn’t show up. This fleshy, pinky-peach, soft matte shade looks so pretty on the cheeks.

Swatches L-R: Bliss, Smitten, Spell Bound, Honeymoon

The MUG blushes remind me most of my NYX blushes. They are very soft and powdery, not like my MAC or Tarte blushes which I seem to hardly ever be able to make a dent in. Smooth and easy to apply, the soft matte finish is so similar to the NYX matte shades. Also like my NYX blushes, these are very long wearing. They are nearly the exact same size as the NYX too; the MUG are 0.15 oz, and the NYX 0.14 oz.

The thing I like best about the four shades I ordered is that they are light, subtle and a little on the sheer side. This makes them so easy to apply. I don’t have to worry about being too heavy-handed or applying too much, which is so easy to do on fair skin. All four look very natural and complimentary. I’d recommend them for any fair-skinned gals out there.

The MUG blushes in the compacts are $12.99 USD each. As always I was super impressed with the MUG shipping (only $9.22 USD). It arrived in just 10 days which is impressive for where I live. I’ve often waited a month for online orders to arrive. I didn’t incur any additional customs charges or anything. I love ordering from the MUG site.

I also ordered a few more of the MUG eyeshadows, and will be doing a post about them as well.
