A Few Recent Things From MAC

MAC Sweet Satisfaction, Desire, and Uninterrupted
This post could easily have been hashtagged Youtube Made Me Do It. I was enticed into purchasing all of these MAC items, two of them by YouTube. The third was by one of those tempting emails MAC keeps sending me that I am evidently helpless to resist. Lets start with my YouTube-inspired purchases.

I saw a Pixiwoo video that featured MAC Uninterrupted Pro Longwear eye shadow. The lovely LisalisaD1 has also talked about Uninterrupted a couple of times now and also recently raved about Sweet Satisfaction, another Pro Longwear. I had never tried the Pro Longwear shadows. Both of these were on my MAC wishlist.

Lisa described Uninterrupted as one of those shades that looks kind of “blah” in the pan, but looks awesome on. I love shades like that. MAC describes it as “dark camel” and its a semi-matte finish. Its quite an interesting shade of brown, that I find really brings out the green in my eyes. It isn’t completely matte but has the tiniest hint of a sheen.

MAC Uninterrupted

MAC Uninterrupted

Sweet Satisfaction is “soft neutral beige” and is a frost finish. Its a beautiful neutral shadow that I think most people would totally love. Don’t be scared by the whole frost thing – it isn’t glittery. It just has a shimmery finish.

MAC Sweet Satisfaction

I am super impressed with the Pro Longwear formula. Both shadows are so buttery and easy to apply and blend yet don’t have any fall-down. They are crazy long-wearing (I always wear a primer). MAC shadows are just my favourite. The Pro Longwear compacts are $25.00 CAD.

My third purchase was totally due to an Artist Tips email from MAC promoting their lustre lipsticks, and if you’ve been following me you probably already know MAC lustres are my favourite lipsticks of all time. The email featured Desire lipstick, described as “warmed burgundy wine”, right up my plum lipstick loving alley!

Its in the same family as some of my other lustre favs like Capricious and Plumful. Its darker, and a more vampy burgundy plum compared to either of those. I love it!

Do you have any recent YouTube Made Me Do It purchases?

The Lipstick Tag!

lipstick-tag
I saw this tag on Stashmatters blog, and in addition to tagging the required 3 people, she also said if you haven’t been tagged and wanted to do this tag, to post a comment and she’d officially tag you! I loved the questions and wanted to do it.

The questions:

1. How many lipsticks do you own? Ok, this was scary. I’d never actually counted them before. Shamefully, I own 86 lipsticks (not including glosses, jumbo lip pencils or crayons, etc.).

2. What was your first ever lipstick? In highschool, no one wore lipstick. We were all about filling in our lips with brown-hued lip liner. Hey it was the 90s! So I actually remember purchasing my first actual lipstick when I was in university. It was a Clinique lipstick. I remember I loved the fluted silver tube!

clinique lipstick

My first lipstick was a Clinique lipstick in a bronzey-brownish type of shade

3. What is your most worn lipstick? Currently, MAC Capricious. I’m on my second tube.

4. What is your favorite brand for lipsticks? MAC!

5. What is your favorite finish? MAC lustre. Best finish ever.

6. What is the last lipstick you bought? Anna Sui Lipstick V in Beige Pink. I will be doing a full review soon!

7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag? This is always a ridiculously high number! Right now, 13. Make no wonder my purse weighs a ton.

8. What lipstick do you use to rock a red lip? MAC Dubonnet.

MAC Dubonnet Lipstick

Best red lipstick for cool-toned fair skin!

9. How do you store your lipsticks? I have clear plastic containers that I picked up at a home-decor store, some that have actual dividers specifically for lipsticks. But they are overflowing!

10. What lip products are you currently lusting over? Cle de Peau because I cannot get it in Canada (you always want what you can’t have), Chantecaille Lip Chic and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. in Bitch Perfect.

Mac is Beauty: Lips

MAC is BeautyI am a huge fan of MAC Lustre lipsticks and I’m often bummed when their limited edition collections come out because the lipsticks are typically in the other finishes, lately matte finishes especially. When I saw the spring Mac is Beauty collection I was really excited because it included 8 Lustre lipsticks!

I was just in Toronto for work and visited the MAC store in the Eaton’s Centre and got to swatch them all. My favourite was Real Redhead. It is the perfect nude for fair skin!

MAC is Beauty Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

Real Redhead is described as “mauve nude”,  an odd description. I would describe it more as a fleshy-peachy nude.  I’ve been looking for a shade like this that works on cool-toned, fair skin for ages. Usually this type of shade washes me out. But Real Redhead has some brownish, beigey undertones that make it work.

MAC is Beauty Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

I think its the prettiest lipstick. If you like the lustre finishes, I’d really recommend you check out the limited edition MAC is Beauty collection. There are 7 other great shades.

Feeling Marsala at MAC

MAC Haul Marsala

Goodies from the MAC Store in the Eaton’s Centre, Toronto

I just got back from Toronto where I had to attend some meetings and present at a conference. It was so cold and dry there! It was about -22 C (which is about -8 F I believe). Since I’ve been back, we’ve also had the worst weather! My university had two snow days this week. On the up-side: sleeping in! On the down-side: shoveling. Here’s a shot of my driveway yesterday morning after we got over a foot of snow. Thankfully my finance and our amazing neighbours helped me out.

snow day

My poor car buried under 1.5 feet of snow that fell overnight

Anyway, the best part of being in Toronto in the middle of a freezing Canadian winter was definitely getting to go to the MAC Store. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t actually have a MAC where I live. I think I must have been in a “marsala” sort of mood, because I was totally drawn to all of the red-brown earthy shades. I had 6 empty containers, so I did a “back-to-MAC” for a free lipstick (wah00!), and also picked up a second lipstick and a lipliner.

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Absolutely It

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Absolutely It

Absolutely It is a brownish, burgundy wine lip pencil that the SA suggested to me to bring out the marsala in any other lip shades you might already own. Don’t you love that? I also picked up two Lustre finish lipsticks, which is my all time favourite type of MAC lipstick.

MAC Sophisto and Spice It Up

MAC Sophisto and Spice It Up!

MAC Sophisto and Spice It Up

MAC Sophisto and Spice It Up!

Sophisto looks quite different in the bullet than it does applied. Although it initially appears more brown, its really a sheer, berry plum with some warm brown undertones going on (or as MAC describes it “dewy rose plum with gold”). In the bullet it almost looks like it might be shimmery, but this does not show up at all swatched or on your lips, so no repeat of my Naked Paris experience. Sophisto is a unique shade that I think you could play around with to get different looks depending on which lip liner you use with it. I’m really enjoying it. It is sheer though, so if you have quite pigmented lips or prefer a more opaque lipstick, it might not be for you.

Spice It Up! is described as “mulled brown berry” which I think is very accurate. Its a beautiful brownish-red. If you are into the 90s lip trend that has made a major come back, then you totally need Spice It Up!

Swatches: Absolutely It, Sophisto, and Spice It Up

Swatches: Absolutely It, Sophisto, and Spice It Up

I also got another blush – I really love the MAC blushes, especially the matte finish blushes. I had Mocha on my list for a while, a muted plum-toned pink matte blush that is a apparently a favourite of the very fair-skinned Dita Von Teese.

MAC Mocha blush

MAC Mocha blush

swatch: MAC Mocha blush

Finally, I also picked up another MAC 239 eye shadow brush. I’ve tried others from MAC, Real Techniques, Make Up Geek, and I just don’t like any other brush for applying eye shadow as much as the 239. So I got a second one.

MAC 239

Best eye shadow brush ever!

Hope you enjoyed my MAC shopping escapades and liked my ideas for “marsala” lipsticks!

MAC Capricious Dupe!

MAC Capricious dupe

Revlon Super Lustrous Mauvy Night VS MAC Capricious

I’m such a huge fan of MAC’s Capricious lipstick. I just bought another one. This lustre finish lipstick is the perfect rosy plum (and also the shade worn by Evil Queen Regina on Once Upon a Time). It may just be my all time favourite MAC lipstick.

I recently did a post on my Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick collection and my favourite Revlon shade is without a doubt the beautifully plum, Mauvy Night (with the recently discovered Plumilicious a very close second). It suddenly hit me that the two shades are quite similar. Although they don’t initially appear to be dupes in the tube, I tried side-by-side swatches and it turns out that Mauvy Night may just be a dupe for MAC Capricious! and probably why I love them both so much.

Swatch Revlon Mauvy Night VS MAC Capricious

Left: Mauvy Night Right: Capricious

I would say that Capricious is a bit more pigmented and slightly glossier than Mauvy Night, but otherwise they are extremely similar. MAC lipsticks are $19.00 CAD and Revlon Super Lustrous lipsticks are only $9.99 CAD, so Mauvy Night is a pretty great drugstore alternative if you’re on a budget.

MAC Lipstick Fail

MAC Naked Paris lipstick

MAC “Naked Paris”: A gritty, glittery mess

It hardly ever happens, but sometimes every now and then MAC gets it so wrong. I was going through my lipstick collection and found this sad little unused one. I had such high hopes for Naked Paris when I ordered it online a couple of years ago.

I thought it would be right up my alley:  a lustre (my fav), in the brown/pink family, “shimmery”…what could go wrong? As soon as I opened it I was like:

ruh-roh

I have never seen a glittery MAC lipstick before, but “glitter bomb” would be how I’d describe Naked Paris. It has so much glitter in it, you can actually feel the chunks of sparkle scraping across your lips when you apply it. You can see by the swatch, Naked Paris actually looks ok when first applied. But its so deceptive. Within half an hour, there is none of that pretty colour left on your lips, but there is tons and tons of glitter.

MAC Naked Paris swatch

Looks pretty at first, then quickly fades leaving nothing but chunks of glitter behind

I have never had a MAC lipstick wear off in such an unflattering way. This is one of the worst lipsticks of any brand I have ever tried.

Thankfully, MAC has discontinued Naked Paris, sparing others from its awfulness. I guess I will just back-to-MAC this one.

Have you ever had a MAC lipstick fail?

Plum Perfect! MAC Plumful Lipstick

MAC Plumful Lipstick

MAC Plumful Lipstick

I’d been coveting this lipstick for a few months now and was so excited to get it for Christmas. It did not disappoint! This was instantly one of my favourite MAC lipsticks. A lustre finish (my fav), Plumful is on the more pinkish side of plum. Its slightly sheer, slightly glossy and so wearable! Its not too dark and not too light – just perfect!

Lipsticks have a tendency to pull very pink on me, so I was a tiny bit worried that this might turn fuchsia on me, but it did not. It retains just enough plummyness and I even think it may have some brown undertones going on. I think this complex shade would work on so many skin tones.

Swatch: MAC Plumful

I can definitely see why Plumful has made so many favourite lists!

2014 Favourites!

2014 makeup favourites
I have never actually done any monthly favourites posts before, so its a bit ambitious of me to start with yearly favourites, but here it goes! Here are the makeup items that I had been loving and using the most all year in 2014:

MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation
You might be sick of hearing me rave about this foundation in 110 Porcelain Pink, but I just love it and have repurchased it 3 or 4 times since discovering it in January. Best foundation for fair skin I have ever found. ($49 CAD)

Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara
Another 2014 discovery that has quickly become my absolute favourite! I have repurchased it probably 3 times now? ($34 CAD)

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara
Cannot live without this mascara. This long-time fav is still going strong in 2014. ($12 CAD)

Almay Intense i-Color Liquid Eyeliner (waterproof)
I really only started using liquid liner this year. I don’t like a lot of heavy liner on my top lids because they are a bit hooded. But I like the effect of getting a thin line of black liner right at the lash line to make your lashes look fuller and more dramatic. The Almay brush is tiny enough to draw a thin line right at the lash line. It dries super fast, literally doesn’t budge or smudge, and also doesn’t irritate my eyes. ($9.99 CAD)

MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl
One of my most repurchased products of all time, I am still in love with this subtle, slightly shimmery, golden beige liner which I use on my lower water and lash line nearly every day. ($19 CAD)

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
I picked this up in January, and I must say I have used it a lot throughout the year. I really like this eyeshadow palette and have been into the “rose-hued neutrals” in 2014. See my review comparing it to the other two Naked palettes. ($64 CAD)

MAC Capricious Lipstick (lustre)
I found this fabulous shade this spring after becoming obsessed with the series Once Upon a Time on Netflix. This is Evil Queen Regina’s lipstick. I’ve only had it since April and its almost completely used up! Must reorder… ($19.00)

MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture and Plum
I’ve been totally obsessed with lip liners this year and two of my MAC favs (narrowed down from many, many others, lol) have been Subculture, a rosey-browney nude pink that works with everything and that I’ve sharpened down to a stump, and Plum, a deep brown-toned plum. ($19.00)

Laura Mercier Plumberry Lip Pencil
Speaking of lip liners…I only became obsessed with this one in September but I’m totally obsessed. Its another one I’ve sharpened down to nearly a stump already and need to repurchase. See my full review. ($28 CAD)

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
I found this by first receiving a Sephora sample and picked up a full-size in January. I have been using it all year and have re-purchased it 2 or 3 times. This setting spray is amazing! ($36 CAD)

Benefit Benebalm Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm
I picked this up in June and I’ve nearly used it up completely! See my full review ($22 CAD)

MAC Patina Eye Shadow
Another of my most repurchased products, I was loving this eye shadow all year. ($12 CAD)

MAC Prism blush
This was without a doubt my favourite blush of 2014. Prism is a matte, muted, slightly peachy, mostly pinky-brown with a completely matte finish. Ever since I got it earlier this year I just never want to wear any other blush. For swatches and more pics see my earlier post. ($26 CAD)

Well that’s it for my 2014 favs!

Happy New Year & thanks for reading!

I Can’t Stop Buying Revlon Shadow Links!

Revlon Shadow Links in "Bone"

Revlon Shadow Links in “Bone”

It started with Greige, then I picked up some more of the taupes and browns, and now I think I might officially have a Shadow Links “problem”. In my defense my drugstore had them on sale again (for $2.95 CAD) and I also can’t seem to resist anything miniature. The little Shadow Links are just so darn cute!

I decided to try out Bone a light, matte cream shade. It seriously reminded me of Brule from MAC (a “soft-creamy beige”). Brule is officially a “satin” finish but on me it looks completely matte. I use Brule so much it was in my Most Repurchased Makeup Products of All Time post. I love to have a matte shade that matches my skin tone to blend out shadows and use on my brow. I have to say I think Bone is a pretty close dupe for MAC Brule.

MAC Brule eyeshadow

MAC “Brule”

Revlon Shadow Links Bone Dupe for MAC Brule

A dupe for MAC’s Brule?

In the pan, Bone looks a little lighter and cooler toned, but once applied they are extremely similar. Bone blended really smoothly. It stayed on all day (I always use my Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer). I did try to get a side by side swatch pic, but they just didn’t show up at all; both totally match my skin tone which is kind of the point but doesn’t make for much of a swatch 🙂

I just continue to be impressed by these little Shadow Links!

How to Get that 1990s Brown Lipcolour

1990s icons: Shannen Doherty, Claire Danes & Liv Tyler

1990s icons: Shannen Doherty, Claire Danes & Liv Tyler

As someone who was in highschool and university in that decade, I sort of know from 1990s brown lips, and its super exciting to me that this look is back in. In the 90s, makeup (from foundation to lip colour) was totally matte. My friends and I actually filled in our lips with lipliner and would never have thought of wearing gloss. The lipliner we were all obsessed with was Bonne Belle “Chutney”, a warm, orangey brown (sadly discontinued). Since I can’t get in a time machine and go back to a drugstore circa 1993, I thought I’d suggest some other good lip pencils for rocking a retro 1990s matte brown lip.

Lipliners for a 1990s brown lip

Lip pencils for a 1990s brown lip

MAC Lip Pencils for a 1990s brown lip

MAC Lip Pencils for a 1990s brown lip: Oak, Spice, Cork, & Subculture

Here are my 9 picks from a number of different brands in various price points:

  • MAC “Oak” ($19 CAD)
  • MAC “Spice” ($19 CAD)
  • MAC “Cork” ($19 CAD)
  • MAC “Subculture” ($19 CAD)
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip 3C “Medium Natural Beige” ($23 CAD)
  • NYX Slim Lip Pencil in “Natural” ($4.99 CAD)
  • Annabelle Lipliner in “Nude Lustre” ($5.95 CAD)
  • Milani Color Statement Lipliner 04 “All Natural” ($3.99 CAD)
  • Milani Color Statement Lipliner 09 “Spice” ($3.99 CAD)

Vampy Retro Lips (just in time for fall)

vampy, retro, vintage fall lipsticks

Vampy, plum-toned lipsticks perfect for fall!

All the leaves have turned beautiful fall colours here in Canada, and isn’t fall a perfect time for rich, plum-toned lip colours? Dark, vampy lipsticks always make me feel like I’m in a classic black and white film. These are some of my favourite vintagey lipsticks:

Besame Noir Red: Not actually a red, but a deep 1930s plum, it has a semi-matte finish. Totally vintage, the Besame lipsticks are exact reproductions of shades worn by Hollywood starlets. This is a perfect film noir, retro pin-up lipstick! $22 USD.

theBalm Girls Amanda Kissmylips: More of a brown-toned plum, on fair skin this has a similar, old-school vampy look as the Besame Noir Red. But theBalm Gilrs lipsticks are very hydrating and have a bit more shine. Love the cute names too! $20 CAD.

Revlon Super Lustrous Va Va Violet:  The Revlon lipsticks are some of my favourites. This rich purple lipstick is a full-on goth type of shade. It goes on a bit sheer, so you could go for a more subtle plum stain or build it up for a bold, vampy lip. Embrace your inner femme fatale! $9.99 CAD.

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in Parisian Passion: Another great drugstore option. I was really impressed by the Moisture Stain and love this deep purple/plum shade. Check-out my full review. $9.99 CAD.

MAC Hang-up (cremesheen): This “deep berry” is a perfect fall shade. I think depending on your undertones, it could look either more raspberry or more blackberry. Its definitely more purpley-plummy on me. $19 CAD.

MAC Capricious (lustre): This luscious plum lipstick is my absolute favourite right now. I have almost used it up and will definitely be repurchasing this shade. Its also the plum lipstick worn by “evil queen” Regina on one of my favourite shows, One Upon a Time. $19 CAD.

Where Have You Been All My Life, MAC Paints?

MAC Paints in Sublime Nature

MAC Paints in “Sublime Nature”

How is it I have only just now discovered MAC Paints? I was watching one of Sanni’s (missmai27) tutorials where she was doing a very subtle, understated eye look, and she used MAC Paints in Sublime Nature. Not to be confused with MAC Paint Pots, Paints come in a little squeezable tube. I had never heard of them!

Paints are described as:
“A high performance eye shadow product which goes on creamy; dries to a powdery finish…Creates a smooth, crease-free, slightly shiny, reflective look to the lid.”

Sublime Nature is a “mid-tone naked beige” and combined with the texture of the Paints creates a very natural, “no make-up” type of look. Very pretty and subtle, particularly on fair skin.

Swatch: MAC Paints in Sublime Nature

Swatch: MAC Paints in Sublime Nature

I found it easy to apply and easy to blend, and it stayed put all day with no creasing. I did use my Too Faced Shadow Insurance under it, but I do that with all the cream shadows I have (Maybelline Color Tattoos, Chanel Illusion D’Ombre, Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadows) because I find all eyeshadow will crease on me without a primer.

MAC Paints are $25 CAD. Paints only come in four other shades: Stillife: pale peach with icy shimmer; Bare Canvas: champagne with shimmer; Untitled: soft grey-mauve with shimmer; and Bamboom: beige-brown with golden shimmer.

Have you tried them?

Thanks for stopping by ❤

Summer Love Tag!

Summer Love TagI was nominated to do the “Summer Love Tag” by the lovely Sonalhira…x. I know summer is almost over, but here are some of the things I’ve loved this summer:

1. Summer lipstick you’re loving?
I’ve been gravitating toward plums and darker, vampy shades lately (not very “summery”). I guess I am in fall mode already! The more summer time type of shade I’ve been wearing is MAC Syrup.

MAC lipstick in Syrup

MAC lipstick in “Syrup”

2. Summer nail polish you’re loving?
I love really dark shades on summer toes! This summer I’ve been wearing Essie “Over the Edge”, a “dramatic metallic midnight silver”, pretty much non-stop.

Essie "Over the Edge"

Essie “Over the Edge” (Photo from http://www.essie.ca)

3. Bikini you’re loving?
I’m more of a full-piece, vintage, Marilyn Monroe-inspired swimsuit gal. My fav is my halter neck, black swimsuit with red cherry print.

4. Favorite summer frappuccino from Starbucks?
I like a plain ol’ iced coffee – literally coffee with ice-cubes.

5. Favorite fake tan?
For pale gals, check out my review of Jergens Natural Glow. It really works!

6. Favorite summer song?
I am such a nerd and not really into pop music 😛

7. Favorite summer accessories?
My pink fedora with an even pinker faux flower, cause why not.
nerdylibrariangirl8. Favorite summer fragrance/perfume?
Issey Miyake.

9. Summer book you’re loving?
Summer is all about the Netflix binge watching (Orange is the New Black season 2, Homeland, V). I am a bad, bad Librarian.

10. What are you most excited to do this summer? What is the most exciting thing you did this summer?
Go to Vegas! Check out some of my posts on Vegas Makeup shopping here, here & here.

I feel like its too late to tag others with a summer-themed tag with summer being nearly over. I tag anyone reading this to reply to this post with answers to these 3 questions:

  1. What’s your fav fall lipstick?
  2. What’s your fav fall blush?
  3. What’s your fav fall accessory?

Thanks for visiting my blog! ❤

My Most Repurchased Makeup Products of All Time

When it comes to favourites, a good indicator that you really love a beauty product is when you use it up entirely and then buy it again (and again!). I had an idea to do a post about the products I have repurchased the most. When I thought about it, I came up with a  list of my 12 most repurchased products of all time, which I could also have called the makeup products I am most obsessed with. So, in no particular order, here they are:

Bare Minerals Original Foundation in Fair

Bare Minerals Original Foundation in “Fair”

Bare Minerals Original Foundation SPF 15 ($35.00 CAD): I’ve been using this powder foundation for over 10 years. Its a great match for fair skin, and when my skin was really break-out prone this was the only foundation that wouldn’t exacerbate the issue. It never irritated my sensitive skin.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer ($24.00 CAD): I prefer the Too Faced over the Urban Decay Primer Potion. I find it creamier and smoother and it lasts longer on me. When I discovered eyeshadow primer it literally changed my (makeup) life!

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain ($36.00 CAD): This is another product that I’ve been using for at least 10 years, maybe more. I use it everyday under my foundation. It gives fair skin a beautiful, glowing from within flush. I couldn’t even guess how many of these little bottles I’ve gone through!

MAC Patina eyeshadow

MAC “Patina” eyeshadow

MAC Omega eyeshadow

MAC “Omega” eyeshadow

MAC Brule eyeshadow

MAC “Brule” eyeshadow

Three of my most repurchased products are MAC eyeshadows in Patina, Omega and Brule ($12-19.00 CAD). I have hit pan on all three multiple times.

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer ($31.00 CAD): This is my absolute favourite under eye concealer. I used to buy “1 – for light complexions with pink undertones” and then Sephora started carrying “0.5 – light beige for fair to light complexions” which I like even better.

Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder ($22.00 CAD for 0.14oz size): I use this to set my under eye concealer. I always buy the mini size because you only need to use a tiny amount. The mini size lasts forever and I’ve still gone through three or four of these.

NYX Angel blush

NYX “Angel” blush

NYX powder blush in “Angel” ($6.00 CAD): This is my favourite blush ever! It lasts longer on me than any other powder blush (Nars, MAC, Tarte…) and is the prettiest shade on fair skin. The blushes are small though, so I go through them quickly. I’ve gone through a lot of these.

MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl

MAC “Powersurge” Eye Kohl

Swatch: MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl

Swatch: MAC “Powersurge” Eye Kohl

MAC Eye Kohl in “Powersurge” ($19.00 CAD): This flattering, wearable “bronzed-brown with golden shimmer” is the perfect eyeliner. I first heard about it from Pixiwoo. I use it on my lower waterline and smudge it out on my lower lash line. I literally have like 3 back-ups of this and I’m also constantly buying it for other people so they can discover the eyeliner goodness that is Powersurge!

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara ($12.00 CAD): I have been loving this little mascara since it debuted. I’d never worn mascara on my lower lashes because I could never find anything that would stay on there. This doesn’t smudge or flake and stays put until I wash it off. And the little brush is so cute!

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20 in the peach pot ($3.99 CAD): I’ve been using this lipbalm since I was in highschool, but I won’t say how long ago that was, lol. I suspect that if I could stack up all of the empty pots of this lipbalm that I’ve gone through, the tower might reach the moon.

I’d like to tag anyone reading this to do this post too! I’d love to hear about your most repurchased products.

Thanks for stopping by! ❤

Two Recent Mascara Fails

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara and Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara and Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara

A couple of months ago, I had run out of my favourite mascara, the Guerlain Maxi Lash, and happened to be near a MAC Store. I thought I’d pick up my second favourite mascara, MAC’s Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash. When I got back to the hotel, I realized the SA had accidentally put a False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara in my bag instead. I loved the cool shape of the tube and thought, well let’s give this one a try then!

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara

Sadly, it didn’t turn out to be a serendipitous discovery of a great new mascara. This one didn’t work for me at all.  My biggest issue was with the wand, which is odd because I usually like a bristle brush. The False Lashes Extreme Black brush is too thick and the bristles too short and stiff – they’re jam packed close together – making it really hard to get the mascara on your eyelashes. The formula is really dry which also doesn’t help with the application. This was a pain to apply and worst of all it would flake off during the day. For $25 CAD, I expect a mascara to stay on a lot better.

I headed to the drugstore for a replacement when I got home. I had been wanting to try Maybelline’s Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara. Ever since Clinique came out with their Bottom Lash Mascara, I have been ranting to anyone who would listen that ALL mascaras should come with a double wand: one for the top lashes and one for the bottom lashes. Isn’t that a good idea? Finally, Maybelline made one. I love the concept!

Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara

I liked both the applicators on this one, although I thought the bottom lash brush could have been smaller. Here it is compared to Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara. The Maybelline brush is twice as long!

Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara VS Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara VS Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

What I didn’t like about the Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes is the formula. Like many drugstore mascaras I’ve tried, this one just didn’t stay on. It smudged quite badly on my lower lashes (I’m sticking to my Clinique Bottom Lash from now on) and it flaked off throughout the day. It also didn’t give my lashes much volume, although it was lengthening.

The Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Washable Mascara is $8.99 CAD. Have you tried it? Did you love it or leave it?

Beauty Blogger of the Month Nomination!

beauty blogger of the month awardI was nominated for Cecilia’s Corner Beauty Blogger of the Month Award by the sweet and lovely Christina from A Casual Beauty and the talented Sonal from sonalhira…x. You should really check out their beauty blogs. I think this award that Cecilia created is such a neat idea and I am very honored and excited to be nominated.

Part of the nomination is answering these 7 beauty related questions:

1. Where does your makeup inspiration come from? From my mom and my grandma, both very beautiful ladies who would never leave the house without looking glamorous. For day-to-day inspiration, other beauty bloggers and youtubers (I’m addicted to tutorials!). I’m also always looking closely at the actresses’ makeup whenever I’m watching a tv show on Netflix or a movie, and then I have to Google what eyeshadow or lipstick they were wearing. I even ask strangers what makeup they’re wearing sometimes! So I get inspiration from a lot of places.

2. What are 3 of your makeup Holy Grail products you cannot live without?
Concealer, concealer, concealer? I definitely could not live without under-eye concealer. If I had to pick two more, I would go with blush and lipstick. My three couldn’t-live-without-them makeup products would have to be:

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer, Benefit Benetint, and MAC Capricious lipstick

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer, Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain, and MAC Capricious lipstick (my current favourite)

3. What is your makeup signature look which you have on most of the time?
Most days I have on very work appropriate (I work at a library) and natural looking makeup: foundation and concealer, light neutral eyeshadow, mascara, blush, and either a nude, a pink or a berry-toned lip.

The makeup look I have on most of the time

The makeup look I have on most of the time

4. Let us know your favorite makeup brands? Let’s see…MAC, Revlon, NYX, Benefit, and if I’m feeling splurgey, Chanel and Guerlain.

5. Your ultimate makeup pet peeve? I don’t really have a specific one, except maybe not wearing makeup at all, ever. I have to hold back the urge to start putting makeup on them 🙂

6. You’ve heard about all the hype on this makeup item, bought it, tried it and don’t understand what all the fuss is about…Name that product!

Tom Ford Lip Color

7. Concealer OR foundation ONLY for the rest of your life. Choose one and tell us the reason! Concealer, definitely! I am very pale and my under-eye area is quite dark and purpley and really stands out. Without concealer I look so tired. I also strongly believe that over the age of 30, under-eye concealer is not optional – lol.

I am also happy to nominate 7 other awesome bloggers to receive next month’s Beauty Blogger award:

More Vegas Makeup Shopping: Mac Pro

Makeup from the MAC Pro store in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

Makeup from the MAC Pro store in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

MAC Pro store in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

MAC Pro store in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace is one of the craziest shopping centres I have ever been in. It’s an entire mall made to look like ancient Rome, complete with a painted faux sky ceiling. There’s a mix of high-end shops – like Burberry, Loubouton, Versace, Dior – and stores regular people like me shop in like H&M, GAP, Sephora, and most exciting of all a MAC Pro store.

I’d never been to a Pro store and it was so cool to see all of the colourful Pro products. I asked the SA about some of the popular Pro products and she immediately asked if I’d tried Peachstock lipstick which she said looks good on almost everyone. I tried it on and I really liked it. I was nervous about the word “peach” in the name, but it has a lot of browney-beigeyness to it, and even though I am quite pale, it doesn’t wash me out. It looks very natural.

MAC Peachstock lipstick

She also recommended the MAC Sculpting Powder and choose the shade “Bone Beige” for me.

MAC Sculpting Powder Pro Palette in "Bone Beige"

MAC Sculpting Powder Pro Palette in “Bone Beige”

The Sculpting Powder is soo soft! Bone Beige is a lovely shade for fair skin. When I was going through the pics from my trip, I saw one and wondered – hey my blush looks good, what was I wearing?  and I remembered that was the day I went to MAC and the SA had applied the Sculpting Powder. I’m wearing Peachstock too. Here’s what they looked like on:

Enjoying a Bellini at the Bellagio (and wearing MAC Sculpting Powder in Bone Beige)

Enjoying a Bellini at the Bellagio (wearing MAC Sculpting Powder in Bone Beige & MAC Peachstock Lipstick)

I also picked up a couple of lip liners because I have a MAC lipliner problem, Dervish Lip Pencil, a pretty, cool brownish-pink, and Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Staunchly Stylish, a rosey, pinkey-brown. These aren’t Pro products though.

Here are swatches of all four:

Swatches L-R: Dervish Lip Pencil, Staunchly Stylish Pro Longwear Lip Pencil, Peachstock Lipstick, and Bone Beige Sculpting Powder

Here’s the price breakdown with approximate $CAD equivalent compared to what I would normally pay in Canada:

  • Dervish Lip Pencil – $15 USD ($16 CAD, regularly $18 CAD)
  • Staunchly Stylish Pro Longwear Lip Pencil – $19.50 USD ($21 CAD, regularly $23 CAD)
  • Peachstock Lipstick – $16 USD ($17 CAD, regularly $19 CAD)
  • Bone Beige Sculpting Powder – $16.50 USD ($18 CAD, regularly $19.50 CAD)

So I saved about $7.50 by shopping in the US 🙂

I hope you’re enjoying hearing about my Vegas shopping escapades! I have a few more posts to come.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I really appreciate all your likes and comments.

Lipstick Addict Tag!

lipstick addict tagI’ve seen a bunch of YouTubers doing the “Lipstick Addict” tag lately. Nobody tagged me specifically, but I really liked this tag and I’ve never done one before and I thought it would be fun. I’m especially excited to tag some other bloggers. So let’s get started…

1. Favorite Lip Balm

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant Fragrance Free

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant – Fragrance Free

The Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant (Fragrance Free) works great as a lip balm, especially in winter when your lips get really dry. I put it on at night before bed.

2. Best Eye-Catching Red

MAC Dubonnet Lipstick

MAC Dubonnet Lipstick

I had the hardest time finding a red lipstick that suited me. I have very pink undertones and a lot of pink in my lips. Every red I tried would look hot pink or fushia on me. The first time I went into a MAC store (after swatching literally every red lipstick in Sephora) it was in search of a red. Dubonnet is the first MAC lipstick I ever bought and still the only red lipstick I own. Its a very intense, more blue than orange red, with a bit of a brown undertone. If you have fair, cool-toned skin this would be a good red to get.

3. Best Luxury Brand

Chanel Coco Shine in Parfait

Chanel Coco Shine in “Parfait”

I only have a few lipsticks from luxury brands (Tom Ford, Burberry, NARS) but my Chanel lipsticks are the ones I enjoy the most. I have Rouge Coco in “Mademoiselle” and Rouge Coco Shine in “Bel-Ami” which I have already blogged about, and this one, Rouge Coco Shine in “Parfait” which is the yummiest pink. I love the scent of Chanel lipsticks!

4. Best Drugstore Brand

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in "Adore" & Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in "Fig Jam"

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in “Adore” (top swatch) & Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in “Fig Jam” (bottom swatch)

My favourite drugstore brand is definitely Revlon, and the Kissable Balm Stains and the Lip Butters are tied for best Revlon lip product. I have a couple of the Balm Stains and I like ‘Adore” the best. I think its similar to MAC’s Dubonnet in that it’s a slightly blue-toned, slightly brownish red. I have a lot of the Lip Butters (I was a little obsessed there for a while) and “Fig Jam”, a deep reddish brown, is my favourite.

5. Best MAC

MAC "Modesty" lipstick

MAC “Modesty” lipstick

This was a difficult one. How do you pick just one favourite MAC lipstick??? I went with one of my favs that doesn’t get mentioned a lot but I think is just an amazing shade, “Modesty”, a neutral, nude pink. Its such a natural, wearable shade.

6. Most Disappointing

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in "Liar"

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in “Liar”

A few other people who have done this tag have listed the Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick as their most disappointing. I was so excited about this line. Just look at the beautiful hammered gunmetal tube! I was loving the UD Naked palettes and then along comes a UD lipstick line full of wearable, nude shades. But, sadly, I am just not in love with this formula. Too thick, too creamy, too opaque. Its not the kind of texture that applies easily or smoothly and it has a dull, almost matte finish. When I’m wearing it, it just feels “blah”.

7. Lip liner yes or no?
YES! I love lipliners. MAC are my favourite, and I have posts on my favourite drugstore lipliners if you’re interested: Annabelle and Milani.

8. Best Gloss
Its a tie between Rimmel Stay Glossy in “Non-Stop Glamour” and the NYX Butter Glosses. Check out my posts for pics & swatches 🙂

9. Something Extra

Quo Lipstick from Shoppers Drug Mart

Quo Lipstick from Shoppers Drug Mart

If you haven’t tried anything from Shoppers Drug Mart’s line, Quo, you might want to give one of their lipsticks a go. I picked this one up last summer. I don’t know if the shade had a name; it only says “6” on the bottom of the tube. I really enjoyed this sheer lipstick in a pretty peachy-pink. It had no scent or taste and felt really hydrating and smooth on my lips and cost less than $10.00 CAD.

That’s all for my Lipstick Addict tag. Now I am tagging:

Tanja Holland
Melissa Raymond
Deana (Zoeebella)
Cat (Live Life Love Lipstick)
The Fabulous Nerd
Stephania (Amuleta Beauty)
Jasmin Charlotte Lifestyle
Living Disrobed
Vanessa (Say Hello To Gorgeous)
Christina (A Casual Beauty)

Rediscovered Love: MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

I was going through my eyeliners, and rediscovered a favourite that I hadn’t used in a while, MAC’s Eye Kohl in “Heirloom”. This is one of my favourite eyeliners for using in my lower water line.

MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

I have several of the Eye Kohls (Powersurge, Costa Riche, Teddy, Smolder) and they are my favourite eyeliners. They are so soft and creamy and easy to apply. They stay put on me all day. Heirloom is described as “highly metallicized greyed lavender” which I think is actually a very accurate description.

Swatch: MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

Swatch: MAC Heirloom Eye Kohl

On the waterline this really brightens the eye without being too much. I typically use MAC Powersurge for my bottom liner, but if I am wearing cooler-toned eyeshadow Heirloom works better with them.

MAC Eye Kohl’s are $19.00 CAD. I unfortunately discovered after writing this post that Heirloom was limited edition 😦 It’s no longer on the Canadian MAC website. Sorry guys! It may be available in outlets or on Amazon. I am also trying to find a dupe (if anyone knows of a similar eyeliner, please let me know).

MAC Limited Edition Lippies: Proenza Schouler & Patentpolish Lip Pencils

MAC Proenza Schouler in Primrose

MAC Proenza Schouler Lipstick in “Primrose”

I don’t typically run out and buy things from MAC’s special collections (there are so many!) but after I saw a review of the Proenza Schouler by Tarababyz I was immediately interested in the lipstick in the shade “Primrose” because it was a Lustre Lipstick (my fav finish) in a deep, rich plum. I’ve been really into plummy, purpley shades lately (see this post or this post for evidence). The Proenza Schouler packaging is very cool – how neat is it to have a MAC lipstick in a square tube? It reminds me of my Burberry lipstick. The shade is so pretty. MAC describes it as “sheer berry plum” which I think describes it perfectly.

Swatch: MAC Proenza Schouler in Primrose

Since I was placing an order, I thought I would get a couple more of the limited edition MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils, since I was enjoying the one in “Sultana” I had picked up while I was traveling. I had, unsurprisingly, gravitated toward the dark grape shade. I ordered “Kittenish” and “Spontaneous”.

MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils in "Kittenish" & "Spontaneous"

MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils in “Kittenish” & “Spontaneous”

Kittenish was described as a “mauvey pink” and Spontaneous a “soft plum with pearl”. I have fairly strong pink undertones, so on me Spontaneous is more of the mauvey pink. Unfortunately, Kittenish ending up looking more full-on bright pink. It didn’t really suit me so I gave it to my Mom, who has much darker skin than me and blonde hair, and she loved it. I really like these. They are great to swipe on quickly, feel balmy and hydrating on your lips, and the colours are sheer and summery.

Swatches: MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils in "Kittenish" & "Spontaneous"

The Proenza Schouler Lipsticks are $26.00 CAD and all four shades are still available on the Canadian site. The Patentpolish Lip Pencils are $24.00 CAD and although Kittenish is sold out on the Canadian site, many of the other shades are still available.

There’s a MAC Store in Pearson Airport!: Stopover Mini-Haul

MAC Store in Pearson Airport
Is it just me or does anyone else think having a MAC store in Pearson airport where you are literally trapped during stopovers, is simultaneously awesome and dangerous? 🙂

Toronto’s Pearson airport (for any curious non-Canadians) is basically the main hub for travel in Canada. I fly through here changing planes practically anytime I travel. I was returning from British Columbia last week when I discovered a MAC store had recently opened there. Not having a MAC store anywhere near where I live, I was ridiculously excited by this! lol.

I spent half an hour of what would have been an otherwise tedious stopover chatting with the very nice and friendly sales assistants and trying on lipsticks. In the end, I was good and only left with one new lipstick (mainly because I had recently placed an online order which I correctly suspected was waiting for me upon returning home). I discovered Syrup, a super pretty Lustre lipstick, which is my favourite type of finish out of all the MAC lipsticks.

MAC lipstick in Syrup

MAC lipstick in “Syrup”

Swatch: MAC Syrup

Swatch Lovin: MAC Syrup

(Sorry about the creepy clawlikeness of my hand in this swatch pic)

MAC describes this shade as “cloudy pink”. I would say its a cool toned, purpley-pink. It looks a little more mauvey-pink on me, but I think it might be one of those shades that looks more pink or more purple depending on your skin tone. It has that sheer, glossy, hydrating finish that I love about MAC’s Lustres. It feels so nice on the lips.

So…what was waiting for me when I returned home? Check in with me again for my next post to see swatches and reviews of some MAC limited edition lip products! 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by ❤

MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil Review

MAC Limited Edition Patentpolish Lip Pencil

MAC Limited Edition Patentpolish Lip Pencil

While I was in MAC, I just had to check out the new, limited edition Patentpolish Lip Pencils. Essentially glossy, balm-like lip colour in a twist-up pencil stick, the Patentpolish Lip Pencils reminded me a little of the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains. They come in 12 shades. I picked Sultana, a “dark grape”.

MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Sultana

MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in “Sultana”

Swatch: MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Sultana

Swatch: MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in “Sultana”

It has quite a lot of pigment, yet is sheer and easy to swipe on without a mirror, which is what you want in a pencil stick like this I think. I have found it very moisturizing and not at all sticky, and also not too shiny. I am kind of sad these are only limited edition because I really like them. I’m thinking of ordering “Spontaneous” (a “soft plum with pearl”) and “Kittenish” (a “mauvey pink”) while they’re still around.

The Patentpolish Lip Pencils are $24.00 CAD.

Have you tried them yet?

Evil Queen Regina’s Lipstick

MAC Capricious lipstick and Plum lipliner

MAC Capricious lipstick and Plum Lip Pencil

I’ve gotten hooked on watching the tv series Once Upon a Time on Netflix. Its from the creators of Lost, my previous Netflix addiction. A lot of the actors from Lost turn up on Once Upon a Time. One of the things I like most about the show is the amazing makeup and costumes. My favourite character is the “Evil Queen” Regina, played by actress Lana Parrilla. I am in love with the lipstick she wears, a deep, rich plum:

Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen Regina on Once Upon a Time

After several episodes spent thinking how I would love to have that shade, I googled “What lipstick does Lana Parrilla wear on Once Upon a Time?”. Turns out, someone had asked her that very same question on twitter and she answered.
lana parrilla lipstick color
MAC Capricious and Plum LiplinerMAC Capricious is a lustre that MAC describes as a “fanciful rose plum.” MAC Plum Lip Pencil is more of a brown plum. I immediately loved Plum lipliner – an instant favourite. Together they make a fantastic lip combo. The liner makes Capricious darker and gives it more of a purpley-plum undertone.

Now, it doesn’t look exactly the same on me as it does on her, but I still really love it. If you have fair skin and dark hair and are looking for that deep, rosy-plummy shade to give you an I-just-stepped-out-of-a-fairy-tale look, you would like this 🙂

Have you watched Once Upon a Time? Which characters’ makeup looks are you loving?

Mini MAC Haul (Prism, Viva Glams, & the 116)

MAC Prism blush, Viva Glam V and VI, and 116 blush brush

MAC Prism blush, Viva Glam V and VI, and 116 blush brush

I had to reorder some MAC staples (they’ll be appearing soon in a “Most Repurchased Products” post) and I couldn’t resist adding a few new things I had been eying before placing my order.

The first thing was MAC Prism blush which I recently saw Sanni (missmai27) use in her awesome Barbarella tutorial. Prism is a muted slightly peachy, mostly pinky-brown with a completely matte finish. It is perfection for fair skin! Many people use it for contouring, but I think it works as a cheek colour too. If you’re looking for something subtle, I think you’d like Prism.

MAC Prism blush

MAC Prism blush

I also didn’t have any MAC face brushes, and finally got the MAC 116 Powder Blush Brush I had been coveting. I really like the size of this brush:

MAC 116 Powder Blush Brush

MAC 116 Powder Blush Brush

I love my Real Techniques blush brush but sometimes find it a bit big. The 116 is smaller and somewhat denser.

Every time I placed a MAC order I would check on the two Viva Glam Lipsticks that had a lustre finish (V & VI) but they always seemed to be out of stock. Lustres are my favourite MAC lipstick; they are glossier and I find them more moisturizing, easy to apply, and feel great on the lips. I was excited to finally get them.

MAC Viva Glam V and MAC Viva Glam VI

MAC Viva Glam V and MAC Viva Glam VI

MAC Vivi Glam V is described as a “neutral pink with pearl” and VI as “terracotta-plum with pearl” and (spoiler alert!) pearl means sparkle which some people may not like. Its a modest amount of sparkle (much less than MAC Naked Paris, which I find a too sparkly) and gives the shades a pretty shimmer. Viva Glam V is a pinky-brown nude on me, very natural looking. My fiance commented that he liked it and he prefers a makeup-free look 🙂 Viva Glam VI is a deeper rosey brown, but I don’t get any plum tones from it.

Swatches L-R: MAC Viva Glam V Lipstick and MAC Viva Glam VI Lipstick

Canadian pricing info if you’re interested: MAC Powder Blush $25.00, Viva Glam Lipsticks $19.00 each, and MAC 116 Powder Blush Brush $42.00.

Excuse my nails in these pics! This winter has been brutal and just won’t end (we’re still having snow days) and they are totally dried out and brittle. If anyone has any suggestions for a hydrating or rejuvenating nail treatment, please let me know.

Thanks for stopping by ❤

xoxo
