When Your BF Goes to Sephora for Christmas

When your fiance goes to Sephora to get you Christmas presents

When your fiance goes to Sephora to get you some Christmas pressies…

Happy holidays everyone! I have been pretty much AWOL this December. I had a sensitive family matter occur that required me to suddenly go out of town (it has been a stressful month), and then I also had to travel for work. I returned home with literally nothing done for Christmas. I decorated a tree and did some shopping 3 days before Christmas! I was so unprepared this year. I pretty much failed at Christmassing. I hope everyone else had a much more stress-free holiday than I did 🙂

I did have a lovely Christmas day with my fiance though. I couldn’t resist sharing this story of his adventure in Sephora. He was out-of-town in December as well, and when he was in Ontario, for the first time he actually ventured into a Sephora seeking some Christmas presents for me. He is aware that I have a lot of makeup, so he told me that he asked the SA for the most “obscure tools” they sold, that I would be unlikely to already have. This question apparently earned him a very blank look from the poor SA! Here’s what he chose all by himself after wandering around the store: Continue reading

Drugstore Swap with ChromaMeSilly!

US drugstore makeup swap

Fabulous drugstore goodies from Miami. Thanks Thalia!

I recently did a swap with the lovely Thalia from ChromaMeSilly who lives in the U.S. Our theme was favourite lip and cheek products from the drugstore. I sent her some Canadian brands, like Annabelle, Quo and Marcelle, and she sent me brands that are hard to get where I live. She sent me such a nice package! I thought I’d share some of the neat things I received.

I was excited about the Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and the Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss. Hard Candy is apparently available in Canada at WalMart, but my local WalMart doesn’t stock much make-up so I’ve never tried anything from them. I absolutely love the packaging! How cute is this for a drugstore brand?

Hard Candy Contouring Face trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

I love the Contouring Face Trio in 839 3rd Wheel. The way I’ve generally been using it is to swirl my blush brush and use all three shades mixed together, but if I just want to pick up some highlight or blush, a pretty peachy-pink, that works too.

I also love the Hard Candy Volumizing Lip Gloss in 916 Magic Mauve. I was nervous at first about the “plumping” part because I can be so sensitive, but I don’t think this lip product has any of those ingredients that intentionally irritates your lips to make them plumper. I just feels a little bit cool. Magic Mauve is a beautiful, nude pink. The formula of this is not like a gloss, but more like a liquid lipstick and the scent reminds me of MAC lipsticks. It isn’t sticky at all and has a very natural-looking finish. It also wears off in the prettiest way of any lip product ever. This is my favourite  item I received and I’d love to have more shades. Great pick Thalia!

Here are swatches of the Hard Candy products.

The next brand she sent me was e.l.f. I’ve never seen e.l.f. in any Canadian stores (if you know of anywhere to purchase it, please let me know) although there are a few websites that ship it to Canada but I haven’t tried ordering from them before. So many bloggers and YouTubers rave about e.l.f. I was really excited to try these too.

e.l.f.

e.l.f. products!

I received:

  • e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia
  • e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine
  • e.l.f Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit
  • e.l.f Essential Clear Brow & Lash Mascara
e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

I had heard about the Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia, which I think was being called a dupe for the NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo in Orgasm/Laguna. The packaging sure is similar. I was so impressed with this! The blush is beautiful and stays on all day without fading.

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

The Matte Lip Color and the Lip Balm Tint are two more fabulous lip product selections from Miss Thalia. I’m not normally a huge fan of matte lip products, but the e.l.f. is an exception. The Matte Lip Color is more like a lip stain, similar to the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains, only not glossy. It doesn’t dry out my lips at all. I always love a tinted lip balm, and both of these worn together is a beautiful lip combo.

Check out the extreme prettiness of these swatches:

Finally, I also received two more lip balms. Anyone who knows me, knows of my lip balm addiction. I have one in every room, in my car, in my office drawers, everywhere! Neutrogena cosmetics aren’t available in Canada, so I loved that I got their Moisture Shine Lip Soother. I also have a thing about goat’s milk (see my post about my favourite soap) so the Dionis Goat Milk Skincare Lip Balm seemed made for me and also has awesome ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. I’m now on a mission to find out if Dionis products are available in Canada.

I really enjoyed swapping with you Thalia! Loved everything you sent me. I’d recommend checking out Thalia’s blog.

Beauty Themed Party Favour Idea for a Baby Shower

makeup themed party favour for a baby shower

It’s a boy!

I threw a very nontraditional baby shower for a friend of mine last weekend. It was a “Boozey, Badass Unshower” actually, with no games (I really am not a fan of baby shower games). I did make a yummy non-alcoholic punch for the mums-to-be in attendance. Because people weren’t going to be winning any prizes, I thought it would be nice to do party favours instead and I had the idea of going with a makeup/beauty theme and thought I’d share it with you.

Disclaimer: I’m sure craftier/more patient types would be able to do a fancier job with presentation. All I managed was some clear cellophane and poorly curled blue ribbon (did I mention it was an “unshower”?). 🙂

Each guest received a Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm in Quenched 005, which is the clear one, and a nail polish in a shade of blue.

Maybelline Baby LipsOPI Blue My Mind

I went with the clear VS the tinted Baby Lips because 1. it has the blue packaging (too perfect) and 2. that way I didn’t have to worry about gals not getting a shade they didn’t like. It was hard to find enough of any one shade of blue nail polish at my drugstore, so I picked up a variety of blue polishes. The brands and shades I picked up were: OPI’s Blue My Mind (pictured), Can’t Find My Czechbook, Keeping Suzi At Bay, and I Saw…U Saw…We Saw…Warsaw, and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Set Sail, Brisk Blue, and In Prompt Blue.

My little deaf white kitty, Miss Vivien Leigh, loved the attention she received from all the ladies and attentively observed the guest of honour opening gifts before taking a nap in a tissue paper fort she’d constructed.

In case anyone is having a par-tay, I thought I’d share the recipe for the punch I made. I made it virgin, but had white rum on hand for spiking too.

Unshower Punch Recipe

  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 2 cups cold (decaffeinated) tea
  • 6 cups Ginger ale
  • 1 sliced lemon
  • 1 sliced lime
  • 1 sliced orange
  • 1/2 jar of maraschino cherries and juice
  • 2 cups soda or sparkling water (add just before serving)

I let it sit with the fruit in it  for a few hours and also chucked in some ice.

Skull Lip Balm!

Rebels Refinery Capital Vices Collection skull lip balm

Rebels Refinery Capital Vices Collection unisex lip balm

Oh hi there. Sorry that from hereforth all other lip balms will seem boring.” – Rebels Refinery

I think that pretty much sums it up. I means SKULL LIP BALM! Are you kidding me? How beyond amazing it this? Rebels Refinery is an awesome Canadian brand that actually specializes in men’s products (but note, the lip balm is “unisex”) made from all natural, organic ingredients that aren’t tested on animals. Their logo and packaging has a real steam-punk vibe.

Rebels Refinery

I ordered their skull lip balm from their website. Although shipping was a little more than I normally like to pay ($17.01 CAD) I think it was totally worth it. Imagine whipping this little guy out of your purse.

skull lip balm

“Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him”

And the lip balm itself is actually really good too! I’m super picky about lip balm. For instance I’m not a fan of EOS or Fresh Sugar. The Rebels Refinery lip balm contains the “highest quality coconut and sweet almond oils” and Vitamin E. I find it very hydrating. I chose the flavour Avaritia, which is Latin for one of the 7 deadly sins (avarice/greed). Its described as “natural” and is pretty much unscented/unflavoured, but the lip balm is also available in Superbia (mint) and Luxuria (“strange-fruit”).

I love how you twist off the skull to reveal the lip balm “brain” inside. So macabre. 🙂

skull lip balm

Brains!

The bottom of the lip balm is even embossed with the quotation “Be all my sins remember’d” – Hamlet.

Essentially the best lip balm of all time, the Rebels Refinery Capital Vices Collection lip balm is a mere $7.99 CAD. Note: As per usual, I am in no way associated with this company and purchased this product myself. All opinions are my own 🙂

Sephora VIB Sale Order Finally Arrived!

Sephora VIB 20% off sale

Gotta love a 20% off sale!

I typically have a long wait to receive nearly anything I order online (the joy of living on an island in the middle of the North Atlantic – lol), but this order seriously took ages. Normally when I place a Sephora order I get a second email that it’s shipped within a couple of days. This time it took 10 days before it even shipped. I guess the volume of orders was extra high because of the big sale.

So I was super happy when it finally arrived. I re-stocked on some favourites that I was nearly out of like:

  • MAKE UP FOREVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation in “110 Porcelain Pink”: This is my third bottle. For a full review checkout my post on why this is the best liquid foundation for fair skin.
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder: Love this powder for setting my under-eye concealer. I featured it in my Most Re-purchased Products of All Time post. I only ever order the 0.14 oz “mini” size because you use so little it lasts forever (for me, nearly a year).  I was surprised that they changed the packaging on the HD Powder though. What I really liked about the mini size was that it was so mini it barely took up any space and was perfect for traveling. The new container is much bigger. Not lovin that so much.
MAKE UP FOREVER HD Powder old packaging VS new packaging

  • Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara: The best mascara ever. They aren’t lying when they call it a “volume-creating and curl-sculpting mascara”. It also doesn’t budge or flake on me. A mascara worth $34 CAD? Absolutely! For more pics see my Guerlain Store shopping post.
  • Laura Mercier Secret Concealer 0.5: Also featured in my Most Re-purchased Products of All Time post. Best under-eye concealer ever IMO.

Now on to the new stuff. I could not resist ordering the Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm. I mean, look at this packaging!

Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm in "Honey"

Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm in “Honey”

Here’s the description from the Sephora site: “It is a cult-favorite amongst Korean pop stars, and ‘Bbo Bbo’ means ‘kiss’ in Korea. This clear-colored balm is infused with hydrating ingredients that include vitamin E and either honey or blueberry extract. Its soft fragrance leaves lips with an irresistible scent.”

I love the packaging, but I am not in love with the lip balm. Its heavily scented (and doesn’t smell like honey) and the perfumeyness lingers and it was all I could taste. Ick.

Speaking of cute packaging though, I love the free Sephora tote that came with the order!

I’m going to do separate, full reviews on my other two purchases – Benefit’s World Famous Neutrals Most Glamorous Nudes Ever eyeshadow kit and the NARS Audacious Lipstick in “Liv”. So check back for those soon!

New: Sephora Kiss Me Balms!

Sephora Collection Kiss Me Lip Balm

New Sephora Collection Kiss Me Lip Balm

I was in Sephora in Toronto at the end of August, and I saw these new little egg-shaped lip balms. They are literally the cutest thing ever. At $10 CAD I had to try one. There are five tinted shades and one clear balm, and I was immediately attracted to the deepest one, “06 Soda Pop” a purpley-plummy shade.

Sephora Collection Kiss Me Balm in 06 Soda Pop

Sephora Collection Kiss Me Balm in “06 Soda Pop”

I was really surprised by three things. One: the colour pay-off. These tinted balms are super pigmented! It stained my lips slightly too. Check out one swipe:

Swatch: Sephora Kiss Me Balm in Soda Pop

The Kiss Me Balms pack a lot of colour!

The second surprise was that they’re scented and flavoured. “Soda Pop” tastes slightly like cherry cola or maybe cream soda? It’s not too overpowering though. I’m not normally a huge fan of scented or flavoured lip products but I just love the colour of this one so much. Apparently each one has it’s own unique flavour/scent so I can’t comment on the others.

The third surprise is how moisturizing this little balm is. It really gives a long-lasting, hydrating feel to the lips. It actually reminds me of the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, especially since the colour is so pigmented and long-wearing too.

They are also visually similar to the EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balms. I really didn’t like the EOS balms, which comes in similar egg-like packaging.

Sephora Kiss ME Balm vs EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm

Sephora Kiss ME Balm vs EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm

I got the one in the pink egg, “Strawberry Sorbet”. All the EOS balms are  clear, and each one has its own flavour/scent. I was using the EOS as a lip balm, because why else would you use it if its not tinted? Not only did it not feel hydrating, it actually dried out and irritated my lips even more. If you were disappointed by the EOS lip balms, you might want to give the Sephora Kiss Me Balms a chance. The formula is much better, the black and clear packaging is much chicer, and they’re tinted with pretty shades.

Ipsy August Glam Bag Review & Why I Cancelled My Subscription

Ipsy Glam Bag for August 2014

Ipsy Glam Bag for August 2014

This is my last Ipsy Glam bag review (more about why I cancelled my subscription below). My August bag arrived late this month, just like my July bag. The August bag’s theme was fittingly “Beauty Schooled”, just in time for back-to-school. This month may be the cutest bag yet, a plastic cylinder shaped bag with orange polka-dots.

In the August bag was:

  • Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (0.1 oz mini):  $26.00 for full 0.4 oz size
  • Lord & Berry Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil (0.02 oz mini): Could not find a price
  • Coastal Scents Forever Blush Sample Duo in “Fresh” & “Elegant” (0.09 oz sample):  $8.70 each for full 0.28 oz sizes
  • Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner: $6.00
  • Paula’s Choice Skincare Clear Ultra-Light Daily Mattifying Fluid SPF 30+ (0.5 0z sample size): $29.59 for full 2 oz size

Retail prices are in CAD and don’t include taxes or applicable shipping.

The total retail value of the August bag (excluding the Kohl Eye Pencil I couldn’t find a price for) if I were to purchase the full-sized products (not including taxes or shipping, etc.) would be: $78.99 CAD.

I was excited to try the  Urban Decay Perversion Mascara but I have to say I was less than impressed with it. Sephora is currently selling it with the Subversion Primer. I don’t know if you’d get a more dramatic, volumizing effect if you used the primer, but it didn’t wow me. I still love my Guerlain Maxi Lash.

The Lord & Berry Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil was a bit of a fail as it was really smudgy and not the type that stays put very well. I’d have to be doing a REALLY smokey eye! Lord & Berry is not a brand that’s available in Canada.

I haven’t tried any Coastal Scents makeup so the blush sample was neat, especially the fact that it was a duo so you get to try two shades. My favourite was the Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner! Love this lip balm!!! I have no idea where to buy it in Canada, except on Amazon.com.

So, I decided to cancel my Ipsy subscription. Why?
It wasn’t because I was unhappy with the Glam bags or the products I was receiving. I actually had a lot of fun getting them each month and although some of the products were misses, many were hits. Here are some of the reasons I decided to cancel:

  • I have been subscribing for a year now. The “novelty” or the fun factor was starting to wear off a bit.
  • I now have 12 cosmetic bags! I was starting to run out of things to do with them 🙂
  • I was accumulating a lot of samples and was finding I wasn’t able to keep up with trying them all.
  • I was looking for ways to save some money in my budget and wasn’t as interested in the expense of a monthly subscription service.

I hope my reviews of my monthly Ipsy bags have been helpful for those of you curious about getting a subscription! Maybe I’ll subscribe to another type of monthly sample service eventually. Who knows.

Thanks for stopping by ❤

My Most Repurchased Makeup Products of All Time

When it comes to favourites, a good indicator that you really love a beauty product is when you use it up entirely and then buy it again (and again!). I had an idea to do a post about the products I have repurchased the most. When I thought about it, I came up with a  list of my 12 most repurchased products of all time, which I could also have called the makeup products I am most obsessed with. So, in no particular order, here they are:

Bare Minerals Original Foundation in Fair

Bare Minerals Original Foundation in “Fair”

Bare Minerals Original Foundation SPF 15 ($35.00 CAD): I’ve been using this powder foundation for over 10 years. Its a great match for fair skin, and when my skin was really break-out prone this was the only foundation that wouldn’t exacerbate the issue. It never irritated my sensitive skin.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer

Too Faced Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer ($24.00 CAD): I prefer the Too Faced over the Urban Decay Primer Potion. I find it creamier and smoother and it lasts longer on me. When I discovered eyeshadow primer it literally changed my (makeup) life!

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain

Benefit Benetint Cheek Stain ($36.00 CAD): This is another product that I’ve been using for at least 10 years, maybe more. I use it everyday under my foundation. It gives fair skin a beautiful, glowing from within flush. I couldn’t even guess how many of these little bottles I’ve gone through!

MAC Patina eyeshadow

MAC “Patina” eyeshadow

MAC Omega eyeshadow

MAC “Omega” eyeshadow

MAC Brule eyeshadow

MAC “Brule” eyeshadow

Three of my most repurchased products are MAC eyeshadows in Patina, Omega and Brule ($12-19.00 CAD). I have hit pan on all three multiple times.

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer ($31.00 CAD): This is my absolute favourite under eye concealer. I used to buy “1 – for light complexions with pink undertones” and then Sephora started carrying “0.5 – light beige for fair to light complexions” which I like even better.

Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Make Up For Ever HD Powder

Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder ($22.00 CAD for 0.14oz size): I use this to set my under eye concealer. I always buy the mini size because you only need to use a tiny amount. The mini size lasts forever and I’ve still gone through three or four of these.

NYX Angel blush

NYX “Angel” blush

NYX powder blush in “Angel” ($6.00 CAD): This is my favourite blush ever! It lasts longer on me than any other powder blush (Nars, MAC, Tarte…) and is the prettiest shade on fair skin. The blushes are small though, so I go through them quickly. I’ve gone through a lot of these.

MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl

MAC “Powersurge” Eye Kohl

Swatch: MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl

Swatch: MAC “Powersurge” Eye Kohl

MAC Eye Kohl in “Powersurge” ($19.00 CAD): This flattering, wearable “bronzed-brown with golden shimmer” is the perfect eyeliner. I first heard about it from Pixiwoo. I use it on my lower waterline and smudge it out on my lower lash line. I literally have like 3 back-ups of this and I’m also constantly buying it for other people so they can discover the eyeliner goodness that is Powersurge!

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara ($12.00 CAD): I have been loving this little mascara since it debuted. I’d never worn mascara on my lower lashes because I could never find anything that would stay on there. This doesn’t smudge or flake and stays put until I wash it off. And the little brush is so cute!

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20

Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20 in the peach pot ($3.99 CAD): I’ve been using this lipbalm since I was in highschool, but I won’t say how long ago that was, lol. I suspect that if I could stack up all of the empty pots of this lipbalm that I’ve gone through, the tower might reach the moon.

I’d like to tag anyone reading this to do this post too! I’d love to hear about your most repurchased products.

Thanks for stopping by! ❤

Love,

Nerdy Librarian Girl
