What I Got at the beautyBOUTIQUE Spend Your Points Event

Chanel lipstick and nailpolish and Guerlain Lipstick

Redeeming Optimum points online at the beautyBOUTIQUE

In Canada, one of our largest national drugstore chains, Shoppers Drug Mart, has a rewards program called Optimum points. The points you earn have a cash value and can be redeemed for most any items in the store for up to a maximum of $170 CAD. My favourite way to redeem my points is at their beautyBOUTIQUE, which carries high-end brands. There are lots of beautyBOUTIQUE locations in Canada, like the big one in the Eaton’s Centre, but just not near where I live. Luckily you can order online! They’re changing the Optimum program and merging it with another points program this month, so last month there were “spend your points” events, probably to entice people into redeeming their points prior to the merge. I was able to redeem my 50,000 points for $105 CAD (an extra $20). Here are the high-end goodies I got for my points. Continue reading

Going to see a Star War

Princess Leia Makeup

Getting into the Star Wars spirit!

Last night my fiance and I finally went to see the new Star Wars. Have you seen it yet? I couldn’t resist geeking out with a bit of a Princess Leia look. It was really easy to do full-on Princess Leia buns with the help of my Irresistible Me Hair Extensions. I looked at some images online of Carrie Fisher’s makeup from the original 1977 film. I did a matte brown eyeshadow look with lots of dark brown liner, paired with an orangey-brown glossy lip (a 1970s idea of a “natural” makeup look?). Continue reading

What Would You Like to Pick Up at the Sephora VIB Sale?

Sephora VIB Sale

Its the VIB Sale at Sephora!

Hi everyone! I took advantage of the 15% off VIB Rouge discount to order a few things today. I re-ordered some favourites, the Guerain Maxi Lash Mascara, the Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara, and my favourite perfume, Issey Miyake. I love getting it in the rollerball form because its so easy to apply and to travel with.

I’d purchased a WEN On the Go Travel Kit and really liked the Sweet Almond Mint Replenishing Treatment, but the full-size is fairly pricey ($41 CAD), so I’m glad I could get this on sale.

I also got two lipsticks to review for my ongoing High-end Lipstick Review series, Dolce & Gabbana and YSL. Can’t wait to review these!

How about you? Are you taking advantage of the VIB sale?

Thanks for reading!

High-end Lipstick Review Series: Rouge G de Guerlain

Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick in 15 "Galiane"

Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick in 15 “Galiane”

This is the seventh lipstick in my High-end Lipstick Review Series! I picked up this lipstick during a Las Vegas shopping trip this summer in the actual Guerlain Store in the Grand Canal Shoppes in the Venetian. I chose the shade Galiane, a warm nudey-pinky-beige. It’s a very wearable “my lips but better” type of shade.

In Canada, Guerlain is online through The Bay and Sephora. The Rouge G de Guerlain jewel lipsticks are $53 CAD. Galiane isn’t available on the Canadian Sephora site, but is available on the Nordstrom site which ships to Canada (but it sells for $62.04 CAD on there!).

Swatch: Rouge G de Guerlain in 15 Galiane

Here’s how the Rouge G de Guerlain did:

I wish I could give this even more than 3/3 Duchess points!!! I really don’t know how lipstick packaging could get any fancier or more high-end than this “luxury jewellery lipstick”. I love the silver metal case – it weighs a ton. And the magnetic cap pops open to reveal a mirror! It looks so fancy to take out of your purse to re-apply. I don’t have any other lipsticks that even compare to this one.

duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

Here’s how Guerlain describes it: “a subtle balance of intense colour and the comforting pleasure of a creamy lip balm…the unique combination of ruby powder for spectacular radiance, hyaluronic acid spheres for perfectly smoothed lips and wild mango butter for lasting hydration.” Those are some fancy (i.e expensive) ingredients! Ruby powder? An ingredients check revealed its synthetic ruby powder, which the Patents site says is “excellent in the effects of covering wrinkles and roughness in the skin”, has “a texture close to the skin in optical deepness”, and photographs well.

I love the formula, which I found creamy, slightly glossy, very hydrating, and it really doesn’t settle into any lines or emphasize any dryness at all. It reminds me a lot of MAC’s Lustre finish, which is my favourite, and like the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine I could apply it in lieu of lip balm. 3/3 Duchess points

duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

Because this lipstick is glossy and a bit on the sheer side (which looks really pretty) it isn’t the most long-wearing of lipsticks. You do have to re-apply more frequently than with some other lipsticks. 2/3 Duchess points

According to Guerlain, its the “light, delicate scent of a vanilla “floriental”…Top notes sparkle with a lemon, orange and bergamot accord. The rose and iris heart exudes sweetness.” Whoa. After all that you’d think this lipstick would be perfumey as all heck, but it actually isn’t. To me it has a slightly old fashioned lipstickey smell that isn’t too bothersome but that I could take or leave. 2/3 Duchess points

I have used this lipstick quite a lot and have never had any reaction to it. Passes the sensitivity test! neutral Duchess points

MAC Test
I like this lipstick as much as MAC for sure. Like I said, its very similar to the MAC lustre lipsticks. neutral Duchess points

Would I pay $53 for another one?
duchess point

This is a tricky one. My initial response is “YES!!! ONE IN EVERY COLOUR!” But then my more practical side says, “calm down, you don’t need $50 lipsticks crazy lady.” This lipstick is a real splurge, and I definitely think its worth the splurge, just maybe not more than once 🙂 But who knows…I actually would really like to try out some more of the Guerlain lipsticks like the KissKiss and the Rouge Automatique. If you do have some extra money to play with, I really don’t think this luxurious, stunningly packaged lipstick would disappoint. 1 Duchess point

Rouge G de Guerlain total: 11/14 (totally splurge-worthy!)

2014 Favourites!

2014 makeup favourites
I have never actually done any monthly favourites posts before, so its a bit ambitious of me to start with yearly favourites, but here it goes! Here are the makeup items that I had been loving and using the most all year in 2014:

MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation
You might be sick of hearing me rave about this foundation in 110 Porcelain Pink, but I just love it and have repurchased it 3 or 4 times since discovering it in January. Best foundation for fair skin I have ever found. ($49 CAD)

Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara
Another 2014 discovery that has quickly become my absolute favourite! I have repurchased it probably 3 times now? ($34 CAD)

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara
Cannot live without this mascara. This long-time fav is still going strong in 2014. ($12 CAD)

Almay Intense i-Color Liquid Eyeliner (waterproof)
I really only started using liquid liner this year. I don’t like a lot of heavy liner on my top lids because they are a bit hooded. But I like the effect of getting a thin line of black liner right at the lash line to make your lashes look fuller and more dramatic. The Almay brush is tiny enough to draw a thin line right at the lash line. It dries super fast, literally doesn’t budge or smudge, and also doesn’t irritate my eyes. ($9.99 CAD)

MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl
One of my most repurchased products of all time, I am still in love with this subtle, slightly shimmery, golden beige liner which I use on my lower water and lash line nearly every day. ($19 CAD)

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
I picked this up in January, and I must say I have used it a lot throughout the year. I really like this eyeshadow palette and have been into the “rose-hued neutrals” in 2014. See my review comparing it to the other two Naked palettes. ($64 CAD)

MAC Capricious Lipstick (lustre)
I found this fabulous shade this spring after becoming obsessed with the series Once Upon a Time on Netflix. This is Evil Queen Regina’s lipstick. I’ve only had it since April and its almost completely used up! Must reorder… ($19.00)

MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture and Plum
I’ve been totally obsessed with lip liners this year and two of my MAC favs (narrowed down from many, many others, lol) have been Subculture, a rosey-browney nude pink that works with everything and that I’ve sharpened down to a stump, and Plum, a deep brown-toned plum. ($19.00)

Laura Mercier Plumberry Lip Pencil
Speaking of lip liners…I only became obsessed with this one in September but I’m totally obsessed. Its another one I’ve sharpened down to nearly a stump already and need to repurchase. See my full review. ($28 CAD)

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
I found this by first receiving a Sephora sample and picked up a full-size in January. I have been using it all year and have re-purchased it 2 or 3 times. This setting spray is amazing! ($36 CAD)

Benefit Benebalm Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm
I picked this up in June and I’ve nearly used it up completely! See my full review ($22 CAD)

MAC Patina Eye Shadow
Another of my most repurchased products, I was loving this eye shadow all year. ($12 CAD)

MAC Prism blush
This was without a doubt my favourite blush of 2014. Prism is a matte, muted, slightly peachy, mostly pinky-brown with a completely matte finish. Ever since I got it earlier this year I just never want to wear any other blush. For swatches and more pics see my earlier post. ($26 CAD)

Well that’s it for my 2014 favs!

Happy New Year & thanks for reading!

Sephora VIB Sale Order Finally Arrived!

Sephora VIB 20% off sale

Gotta love a 20% off sale!

I typically have a long wait to receive nearly anything I order online (the joy of living on an island in the middle of the North Atlantic – lol), but this order seriously took ages. Normally when I place a Sephora order I get a second email that it’s shipped within a couple of days. This time it took 10 days before it even shipped. I guess the volume of orders was extra high because of the big sale.

So I was super happy when it finally arrived. I re-stocked on some favourites that I was nearly out of like:

  • MAKE UP FOREVER HD Invisible Cover Foundation in “110 Porcelain Pink”: This is my third bottle. For a full review checkout my post on why this is the best liquid foundation for fair skin.
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder: Love this powder for setting my under-eye concealer. I featured it in my Most Re-purchased Products of All Time post. I only ever order the 0.14 oz “mini” size because you use so little it lasts forever (for me, nearly a year).  I was surprised that they changed the packaging on the HD Powder though. What I really liked about the mini size was that it was so mini it barely took up any space and was perfect for traveling. The new container is much bigger. Not lovin that so much.

  • Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara: The best mascara ever. They aren’t lying when they call it a “volume-creating and curl-sculpting mascara”. It also doesn’t budge or flake on me. A mascara worth $34 CAD? Absolutely! For more pics see my Guerlain Store shopping post.
  • Laura Mercier Secret Concealer 0.5: Also featured in my Most Re-purchased Products of All Time post. Best under-eye concealer ever IMO.

Now on to the new stuff. I could not resist ordering the Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm. I mean, look at this packaging!

Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm in "Honey"

Tony Moly Bbo Bbo Lip Balm in “Honey”

Here’s the description from the Sephora site: “It is a cult-favorite amongst Korean pop stars, and ‘Bbo Bbo’ means ‘kiss’ in Korea. This clear-colored balm is infused with hydrating ingredients that include vitamin E and either honey or blueberry extract. Its soft fragrance leaves lips with an irresistible scent.”

I love the packaging, but I am not in love with the lip balm. Its heavily scented (and doesn’t smell like honey) and the perfumeyness lingers and it was all I could taste. Ick.

Speaking of cute packaging though, I love the free Sephora tote that came with the order!

I’m going to do separate, full reviews on my other two purchases – Benefit’s World Famous Neutrals Most Glamorous Nudes Ever eyeshadow kit and the NARS Audacious Lipstick in “Liv”. So check back for those soon!

Las Vegas Makeup Shopping: The Guerlain Shop

Makeup from Guerlain at the Grand Canal Shoppes

A trip to Guerlain at the Grand Canal Shoppes

Hello everyone! I am finally back from my trip, where I didn’t have any wifi access at the hotel or the conference centre. Sorry I haven’t been able to post anything. I had an amazing time and have lots of great stuff that I picked up in Vegas to tell you about.
welcome to fabulous las vegas nevada
While visiting the Venetian (yes, I did go on the gondola ride, lol) we strolled through the Grand Canal Shoppes where I spotted a Guerlain store. I can only order Guerlain through the Sephora website; They don’t seem to carry it in-store at the Canadian Sephoras. I was excited to actually get to see the products in real life and swatch them. My absolute favourite mascara is Guerlain Maxi Lash Volume Creating Curl Sculpting Mascara. I had recently used mine up and tried out two other mascaras in the meantime that I really didn’t care for (I will do a review of those soon).

Guerlain Maxi Lash Volume Creating Curl Sculpting Mascara

Guerlain Maxi Lash Volume Creating Curl Sculpting Mascara

The Guerlain Maxi Lash has a traditional bristle brush and is on the smaller, thinner side, so it’s a lot easier to apply than some of the mascaras with the popular new humongous wands. I just love the formula of this mascara – very thick! It really makes my lashes look thicker and fuller. And although I know it sounds weird, this mascara is just blacker than any other I’ve tried. It gives a dramatic false-eyelashes effect. It stays on, doesn’t flake or smudge, and doesn’t leave my lashes feeling crunchy and stiff. I was so happy to be wearing this again.

Since I could swatch, I also finally bought a Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colour with the super fancy jewel lipstick compact. I picked the shade “15 Galiane”. Look how crazy fancy the lipstick case is! It even has a mirror that flips open on its own.

Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colour in 15 "Galiane"

Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Colour in 15 Galiane

Galiane is a new shade just added this year (it’s not available on the Canadian Sephora site, but it is through the Nordstrom site). It’s a nudey-pinky-beige. The finish is slightly sheer, moisturizing, and a little bit glossy. It actually reminds me of MAC’s Lustre finish, which is my favourite, so the Rouge G de Guerlain formula is right up my alley. It has a very mild “lipstick” smell, but no taste. It was definitely a splurge, but I really do love it.

Rouge G de Guerlain in 15 Galiane

Rouge G de Guerlain in 15 Galiane

I paid $30 USD for the mascara, which is about $32 CAD. It’s $34 CAD through Sephora. The lipstick was $51 USD or about $54 CAD. They are $53 CAD through Sephora. So the cost was roughly the same as if I’d bought them in Canada.

I have lots more Vegas shopping to blog about, so stay tuned for more posts over the next few days! I’ll leave you with a pic of me on the gondola ride at the Venetian.
