This summer, I read War Paint: Madame Helena Rubinstein and Miss Elizabeth Arden: Their Lives, Their Times, Their Rivalry and it got me curious about the Estee Lauder brand. I had a gift card for Sears (a place I hardly ever shop) and then I remembered my Sears has a makeup counter, though a small one, and that they carry Estee Lauder. I’d never ever tried anything from the brand.
I was really attracted by the packaging of the Signature Hydra Lustre Lipstick which retails here in Canada for $25.00 CAD.

The weighty, fluted, gold tube with scalloped edging reminds me of a vintage lipstick from the 1940s or 1950s. Its so retro! Then there is the shade, Black Cherry. OMG it is spectacular. A deep, berry shade with brown undertones, its subtlety vampy and so flattering on fair skin. I think the nicest thing about it is the finish. Its rich yet sheer with a dewy finish. This contrasts nicely with the richness of the shade. On the lips, it just looks yummy!

Now, the downside is the scent. What a weird scent on this lipstick! Its sort of fruity? yet hard to describe. Its definitely not my favourite. It thankfully doesn’t have a taste and the scent fades after application, but I would prefer if this was just unscented. Luckily I love the shade so much I am willing to endure the scent.
I wouldn’t say this lipstick is “hydrating” as claimed, and certainly doesn’t deliver “hours of moisture”, but it doesn’t dry out my lips either. If I have some lip balm on before I apply it, it feels very comfortable on the lips.
The other neat thing about Estee Lauder is they are really big on gifts with purchase. Check out all the stuff I got:

I’m in love with the cosmetic bag which I am using to carry around the copious lip products in my purse. I’m really enjoying the mini sample-size Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick which retails full-sized for $32.00 CAD. I received the shade Pinkberry, which is a creme finish.

The Estee Lauder site says its “enriched with lip-loving ingredients, including apricot kernel, shea butter and murumuru butter that leave lips soft and creamy smooth” and I think it does feel much more moisturizing than the Hydra Lustre formula. Unfortunately, it does have the same weird chemically-fruity scent as the Hydra Lustre lipstick 😦
Pinkberry is a super pretty, wearable, nudey brown-pink. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this shade.
Overall I am impressed with the Estee Lauder lipsticks, if not with the fragrance of them. I am definitely curious to try more products from this brand. Are you an Estee Lauder fan? Do you have any favs you’d recommend?
Thanks for reading ❤
