DIY Pedis & My Fav Summer Polishes for Toes

Bon Vital Spa Pomegranate & Acai Berry Salt Scrub and Lavender & Rosemary Sugar Scrub

Bon Vital’ BVspa Pomegranate & Acai Berry Salt Scrub and Lavender & Rosemary Sugar Scrub

Summertime is when you need your feet to look their best. During Canadian winters, I literally don’t see my feet for months on end, but they emerge in the summer to peek out of cute open-toed shoes. I’m a big fan of going for the occasional professional pedicure, but I also really like doing my own at home. The thing I love most about a pedi is that although my skin is generally pretty sensitive to fragrance, the one exception are my feet. Its the one time I can indulge in that luxurious spa-like experience of using lovely scented skincare products like a normal girl! Here are my fav skincare products that I’ve been using for summertime feet, and the polishes I have been loving the most on my toes. Continue reading

Chanel Vamp Attitude Holiday 2015 Collection

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in #18 Rouge Noir and Rouge Allure Intense Long-wear Lip Colour in #109 Rouge Noir

Chanel Le Vernis/Nail Colour in #18 Rouge Noir and Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in #109 Rouge Noir

When I read that Chanel was coming out with a holiday collection inspired by their iconic 1990s shade Vamp, I was so excited! According to Chanel “In 1994, a uniquely striking Le Vernis shade was revealed on the Chanel Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear runway, and a legend was born. This year, a gleaming Holiday colour collection celebrates the rebellious black-red, ‘Vamp’ — the shade that became an icon.” I have ranted about my coming-of-age in the 1990s love of Vamp nail polish previously. I knew I needed the lipstick and nail polish in the Vamp-inspired shade Rouge Noir.

While I was in Ottawa for work just before Christmas, I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique in the Rideau Centre and I was so happy that they had both the lipstick and the nail polish in stock. Both are LE. Continue reading

Another Hit from Revlon Gel Envy

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in 300 All In

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in All In

I am totally in love with Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy, a nail polish that actually stays on more than a day for me. The latest colour that I’m loving is 300 All In, a rich, midnight blue with shimmer. This shade is so pretty! I love that you get an iridescent sheen but it’s not a “glitter” polish. This lasted a full 5 days which, on me, is amazing. With other polishes, like Essie or OPI, I sometimes don’t even get a full 24 hours without significant chipping.

Check out my reviews of some of the other shades I’m loving, like High Stakes and Ace of Spades.

Revlon Gel Envy High Stakes

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in High Stakes

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in High Stakes

I love the Revlon Gel Envy nail polish. It lasts without chipping about twice as long as typical nail polish on me. I had a bit of a miss with the shade Checkmate which was a bit streaky. I’m loving High Stakes though, a dramatic dark green. This went on so easily in 2 coats and is intense. I think its a really unique and sophisticated shade.

Beauty Themed Party Favour Idea for a Baby Shower

makeup themed party favour for a baby shower

It’s a boy!

I threw a very nontraditional baby shower for a friend of mine last weekend. It was a “Boozey, Badass Unshower” actually, with no games (I really am not a fan of baby shower games). I did make a yummy non-alcoholic punch for the mums-to-be in attendance. Because people weren’t going to be winning any prizes, I thought it would be nice to do party favours instead and I had the idea of going with a makeup/beauty theme and thought I’d share it with you.

Disclaimer: I’m sure craftier/more patient types would be able to do a fancier job with presentation. All I managed was some clear cellophane and poorly curled blue ribbon (did I mention it was an “unshower”?). 🙂

Each guest received a Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm in Quenched 005, which is the clear one, and a nail polish in a shade of blue.

Maybelline Baby LipsOPI Blue My Mind

I went with the clear VS the tinted Baby Lips because 1. it has the blue packaging (too perfect) and 2. that way I didn’t have to worry about gals not getting a shade they didn’t like. It was hard to find enough of any one shade of blue nail polish at my drugstore, so I picked up a variety of blue polishes. The brands and shades I picked up were: OPI’s Blue My Mind (pictured), Can’t Find My Czechbook, Keeping Suzi At Bay, and I Saw…U Saw…We Saw…Warsaw, and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Set Sail, Brisk Blue, and In Prompt Blue.

My little deaf white kitty, Miss Vivien Leigh, loved the attention she received from all the ladies and attentively observed the guest of honour opening gifts before taking a nap in a tissue paper fort she’d constructed.

In case anyone is having a par-tay, I thought I’d share the recipe for the punch I made. I made it virgin, but had white rum on hand for spiking too.

Unshower Punch Recipe

  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 2 cups cold (decaffeinated) tea
  • 6 cups Ginger ale
  • 1 sliced lemon
  • 1 sliced lime
  • 1 sliced orange
  • 1/2 jar of maraschino cherries and juice
  • 2 cups soda or sparkling water (add just before serving)

I let it sit with the fruit in it  for a few hours and also chucked in some ice.

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in Checkmate

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in 540 Checkmate

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in 540 “Checkmate”: Streaktastic

After falling in love with Revlon Colorsty Gel Envy in 500 “Ace of Spades” I am a bit disappointed in the latest shade I’ve tried, “Checkmate” – a pale, nudey-beige. This shade was totally streaky! I didn’t have that issue with Ace of Spades.

After 2 coats, Checkmate looked ok (not great), but as soon as I applied the clear top coat, it was like it removed some of the colour. It ended up being a bit of a streaktastic mess. I also decided that this pale nude shade doesn’t look the greatest on fair skin. Oh well!

I wonder if anyone else has found some inconsistency amongst the different shades with the Gel Envy polishes?

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy: Longwear Polish with no Salon Visit?

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy nail polish in "500 Ace of spades"

Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy nail polish in 500 “Ace of spades”

I love the look of nail polish, but it never lasts on me. I usually only get one full day out of a home manicure and it starts chipping like crazy, and by the second or third day looks terrible. Yes, I’ve tried base coats, top coats, etc. with minimal results. That’s why I love shellac polish (that sets with the UV light). It lasts nearly 14 days on me looking perfect. The downside is how much acetone nail polish remover I have to use to get the stuff off. It ends up wrecking my nails.

So I was pretty skeptical to try the Revlon Gel Envy Longwear Nail Enamel. It’s advertised as “salon-quality colour with our revolutionary 2-step system”. I absolutely loved the shade “Ace of Spades”, a dark charcoal grey. All of the shades have Vegas inspired names. The first step is a “color + base”. I needed two coats. Then you top it with the clear, protective Diamond Top Coat. I didn’t find it dried quite as quickly as some other top coats, but I really loved how shiny the polish was! It was definitely just as shiny as when I have had shellac done at the salon.

This stuff really did last! I got 5 whole days without a single chip. That’s amazing for me.

The Colorstay Gel Envy polish and top coat are $9.99 CAD each.

Do you have trouble with polish not staying on and chipping? Have you come across any long wearing polishes or top coats?

Summer Love Tag!

Summer Love TagI was nominated to do the “Summer Love Tag” by the lovely Sonalhira…x. I know summer is almost over, but here are some of the things I’ve loved this summer:

1. Summer lipstick you’re loving?
I’ve been gravitating toward plums and darker, vampy shades lately (not very “summery”). I guess I am in fall mode already! The more summer time type of shade I’ve been wearing is MAC Syrup.

MAC lipstick in Syrup

MAC lipstick in “Syrup”

2. Summer nail polish you’re loving?
I love really dark shades on summer toes! This summer I’ve been wearing Essie “Over the Edge”, a “dramatic metallic midnight silver”, pretty much non-stop.

Essie "Over the Edge"

3. Bikini you’re loving?
I’m more of a full-piece, vintage, Marilyn Monroe-inspired swimsuit gal. My fav is my halter neck, black swimsuit with red cherry print.

4. Favorite summer frappuccino from Starbucks?
I like a plain ol’ iced coffee – literally coffee with ice-cubes.

5. Favorite fake tan?
For pale gals, check out my review of Jergens Natural Glow. It really works!

6. Favorite summer song?
I am such a nerd and not really into pop music 😛

7. Favorite summer accessories?
My pink fedora with an even pinker faux flower, cause why not.
nerdylibrariangirl8. Favorite summer fragrance/perfume?
Issey Miyake.

9. Summer book you’re loving?
Summer is all about the Netflix binge watching (Orange is the New Black season 2, Homeland, V). I am a bad, bad Librarian.

10. What are you most excited to do this summer? What is the most exciting thing you did this summer?
Go to Vegas! Check out some of my posts on Vegas Makeup shopping here, here & here.

I feel like its too late to tag others with a summer-themed tag with summer being nearly over. I tag anyone reading this to reply to this post with answers to these 3 questions:

  1. What’s your fav fall lipstick?
  2. What’s your fav fall blush?
  3. What’s your fav fall accessory?

Thanks for visiting my blog! ❤

Lovin the New Zoya Naturel 2 Collection

Zoya Naturel 2 Nail Polish Collection

Zoya Naturel 2 Nail Polish Collection (photos from http://www.zoya.com)

I just watched MissGoldgirl, Marnie’s YouTube video on the Zoya Naturel 2 nail polish collection. She has one of the shades named after her which is really neat. I think these 6 nude inspired shades look fabulous. The collection includes:

  • Spencer – rich camel cream
  • Chanelle – toasted almond cream
  • Emilia – dark chocolate cream
  • Marnie – deep warm plum cream
  • Aubrey – medium mauve cream
  • Madeline – muted rose cream

Zoya is a difficult brand to find in Canada, but is available online through www.nailpolishcanada.com, which has free shipping. But the site doesn’t have the Naturel 2 shades yet. I am super bummed. For now I will just have to keep them on my wish list.

What do you think of these shades?

How Badass is the Pulp Fiction Makeup Collection?

Urban Decay's Pulp Fiction Makeup Collection!

Urban Decay’s Pulp Fiction Collection!

I can’t even describe how excited I was to see that Sephora package arrive today (more excited than usual even) because I knew it contained the items I’d ordered from the Urban Decay Pulp Fiction makeup collection. I am a huge Tarantino fan and have seen Pulp Fiction about a million times and have even been Mrs. Mia Wallace for Halloween. This collection did not disappoint.

My most favourite details about this collection? 1. The iconic “path of the righteous man” quote is printed on the eyeshadow palette. 2. The quote is even written inside the boxes containing the lipstick and nail polish, and 3. The lipstick and nail polish shades are both named “Mrs. Mia Wallace”! This is seriously the coolest packaging ever.

Let’s start with the amazing Stay Cool Honey Bunny eyeshadow palette. The shadows are the buttery soft, pigmented goodness you’d expect from Urban Decay. And love the names!

These are shades I would gravitate to anyway – very neutral, cool toned browns and creams.

Then there’s the beautiful deep red lipstick. I love how the Revolution lipstick tube is black (although it isn’t reading as quite as black in this photo).

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Mrs. Mia Wallace

Revolution Lipstick in “Mrs. Mia Wallace”

I wasn’t in love with the Revolution Lipstick I bought in “Liar”. I didn’t think the formula worked for a nude lipstick (too opaque and matte) but I think it works better in this vampy red. It went on extremely smooth and stayed on for hours and surprisingly didn’t feel drying. It’s a deep, cool-toned red. Definitely very Mia Wallace.

I also got the nail polish in “Mrs. Mia Wallace”, although Uma Thurman famously wore Chanel “Vamp” nail polish in the original film. Urban Decay’s version is similar (a dark, blood red) but not the same as the shade she wore in the film. Vamp was more of a blackened plum. I love the Urban Decay nail polish bottle with the black skull on the top though!

I am delighted with this collection. If you’re thinking of picking up these limited edition items, here are the Canadian prices:

  • Stay Cool Honey Bunny eyeshadow palette: $41.00
  • Mrs. Mia Wallace Revolution Lipstick: $26.00
  • Mrs. Mia Wallace Nail Polish: $18.00

Shiny, Captain: Sally Hanson Diamond Hard Flash Topcoat

Sally Hansen Diamond Hard Flash Top Coat

Sally Hansen Diamond Hard Flash Top Coat

Just a quick post to tell you about a top coat I just discovered, Sally Hansen Diamond Hard Flash Top Coat. I was in the nail polish section and a lady was looking for it and I helped her find it. She just raved about it, so I bought a bottle too! Although the bottle is black, it’s your typical clear polish.

The thing I like most about it is how shiny it is. With two coats it almost gives the effect of shellac nail polish. It’s also the most long-wearing top coat that I’ve tried so far and it dries really fast (in about a minute).

Sally Hansen Diamond Hard Flash Top Coat is approximately $4.99 – $5.99 CAD, depending on where you purchase it, and is available in Canada in most drugstores, Walmart, and Target.

In case you’re wondering, the colour I have on my nails is “In the Morning” from the OPI Gwen Stefani collection, a very dark charcoal grey. I didn’t realize when I bought it that it’s a matte finish. OPI calls it a “satin” finish. I love the shade, but I’m so not into matte nail polish. I like it with a shiny topcoat over it though.

Ipsy July Glam Bag Review

July Glam Bag: mini bareMinerals Ready Eyeshadow 2.0, pur-lisse pur-protect essential daily moisturizer spf30, Clear Clinic Laboratories Vanished Clear Spot Treatment, Models Own Nail polish, and Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm

July Glam Bag: mini bareMinerals Ready Eyeshadow 2.0, pur-lisse pur-protect essential daily moisturizer spf30, Clear Clinic Laboratories Vanished Clear Spot Treatment, Models Own nail polish, and Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm

My July bag arrived really late this month. The July bag’s theme was “Sensationally Sunkissed” and the bag was bright pink (my favourite colour!). Unfortunately it was another one of those plastic bags with a strong chemical off-gassing smell. Ick.

In the July bag was:

  • bareMinerals Ready Eyeshadow 2.0 mini with the shades “Muse” and “Passion” a pink and a purple shade:  $25.00 for full size
  • pur-lisse pur-protect essential daily moisturizer spf30 (15ml sample size): $65.00 for full 50 ml size
  • Clear Clinic Laboratories Vanished Clear Spot Treatment (2 ml sample size):  $38.00 for full 7.5 ml size
  • Models Own nail polish in “Red Sea”: $9.50
  • Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm mini in “Pretty Pink” (1.8 g sample size): $22.00 for full size

Retail prices are in CAD and don’t include taxes or applicable shipping.

The total retail value of the July bag if I were to purchase the full-sized products (not including taxes or shipping, etc.) would be: $159.50 CAD. This month’s bag was pretty high-end.

I absolutely love the mini bareMinerals eyeshadow and mini Pixi tinted lip Balm – they are beyond cute. Pur-lisse and Clear Clinic Laboratories are two expensive brands and I’m excited to try them out. Overall, a really good bag this month!

Thanks for stopping by ❤

Ipsy April Glam Bag Review

April Ipsy Glam Bag: UD 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil, Rainbow Honey Midnight Fountain glitter nail lacquer, dr. brandt microdermabrasion skin exfoliant, Jasmine perfume oil, and Mary Kay at Play Jelly Lip Gloss

April Ipsy Glam Bag: UD 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil, Rainbow Honey Midnight Fountain glitter nail lacquer, dr. brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant, Demeter Jasmine perfume oil, and Mary Kay at Play Jelly Lip Gloss

The April Glam Bag’s theme was “Beauty Rocks” and contained products with a rock-n-roll sort of theme. The cosmetic bag was really cute, and also said “Beauty Rocks” with an image of an old vinyl record.  The bag contained 5 products, 4 of which were sample sizes:

  • Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil in “Black Velvet” (0.03 oz size): $24.00 CAD for full 0.04 oz size
  • Rainbow Honey glitter nail lacquer in “Midnight Fountain” (sample size): $11.50 CAD for full size
  • dr. brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant (0.25 oz sample size): $90.00 CAD for 2 oz size
  • Demeter Jasmine perfume oil (o.29 sample size): $20.00 CAD for full 1 oz size. This is the first time I’ve received perfume in my Glam Bag.
  • Mary Kay at Play Jelly Lip Gloss in “Berry Me”: $11.00 CAD

Retail prices are in CAD and don’t include taxes or applicable shipping.

The total retail value of the April bag if I were to purchase the full-sized products (not including taxes or shipping, etc.) would be: $156.50 CAD.

I am happy with this month’s products with the exception of the Mary Kay. I am not a fan of Mary Kay because I am allergic to their products, so I won’t be using the lip gloss. The dr. brandt is quite a high-end product. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

In Canada, Rainbow Honey nail lacquer and Demeter perfume is available through nailpolishcanada.com. Urban Decay and dr. brandt are available at Sephora. Mary Kay can be purchased through their “independent beauty consultants”.

Ipsy February Glam Bag Review

February Ipsy Glam Bag: Dr. Lin Acne Spot Corrector, Zoya Nail Polish in Odette, City Color Be Matte Blush in Fresh Melon, POP Beauty Plump Pout in Peony Petal, and Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow + Base In One in Ambrosia.

February Ipsy Glam Bag: Dr. Lin Acne Spot Corrector, Zoya Nail Polish in Odette, City Color Be Matte Blush in Fresh Melon, POP Beauty Plump Pout in Peony Petal, and Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow + Base In One in Ambrosia.

This is my sixth Glam Bag. The February bag arrived really late in the month, but we have had terrible weather here, many snow days and blizzards, so it likely delayed the mail (the joys of Canadian winters!). I don’t think it was Ipsy’s fault. This month’s bag contained:

  • Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector (0.5 oz travel size): about $7.00 for the full 1 oz size
  • Zoya Nail Polish in “Odette”: $9.75
  • City Color Be Matte Blush in “Fresh Melon”: $3.30
  • POP Beauty Plump Pout Mini in Peony Petal: $19.40 for full size
  • Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow + Base In One in Ambrosia: $19.95

Retail prices are in CND and don’t include taxes or applicable shipping.

I was really happy with this month’s bag. I loved that the cosmetic bag was pink (my fav colour, and perfect for February). It had a good variety of products – from makeup to nail polish to skincare. I was pleased with the shade selection that I received too. Three of the five were also full-sized products.

My two favourites were the pretty purple Zoya polish and the POP Beauty Plump Pout in Peony Petal, a really lovely rosey pink. Although the scent of the lip gloss is a little odd (I think they were going for creme brule?) it isn’t overpowering and doesn’t have a strong flavour.

The total retail value of the February bag if I were to purchase these products (not including taxes or shipping, etc.) was: $59.40 CND.

Where to buy in Canada:
Zoya: NailPolishCanada.com. POP Beauty: Canada Beauty Supply. Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow + Base In One: ‘Tini website. I couldn’t find Canadian sites without customs/import duties for the Dr. Lin Skincare or City Color products.

Ipsy December Glam Bag Review

Ardell Naturel lashes, NYX Lipstick, NICKA K New York nail polish, POP Beauty eyeshadow trio, Be a Bombshell The One Stick

Ardell Naturel lashes, NYX Lipstick, NICKA K New York nail polish, POP Beauty eyeshadow trio, Be a Bombshell The One Stick

This is my fourth Glam Bag, and I am still pretty pleased. I had previously reviewed my November Glam Bag. The December theme was “Celebration!”. This bag contained:

  • Ardell Naturel 120 Demi Black lashes: $6.29
  • NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in “Cream”: $5.99
  • NICKA K New York nail polish in “Classic Taupe”: $5.30
  • POP Beauty eyeshadow trio in “Smokin Hot”
  • Be a Bombshell The One Stick in “Girl Crush”: $16.98

Retail prices are in CND and don’t include taxes or applicable shipping.

I love Ardell lashes and it was great to get a new pair just in time for the holidays. I am not typically a big fan of NYX lipsticks, but I’m actually liking the formula of the Extra Creamy Round which doesnt have the typical icky, perfumey NYX lip product scent and taste. Unfortunately the colour doesnt quite suit me but I may check out some of the other shades now.

The NICKA K polish is “DBP, Toluene and added formaldehyde free’ and I loved the colour, but the formula is a bit thin and streaky and required 3-4 coats. I much prefered the Nailtini nail lacquer from last month’s Glam Bag. I also don’t think NICKA K products are available in Canada. I calculated the Canadian price from the American website (which doesnt ship internationally). UPDATE: NICKA K is sold at London Drugs, in-store only.

POP beauty is a UK based brand. I couldn’t find the eyeshadow trio for sale anywhere, which I can only guess means it may have been a special sample prepared for the Glam Bag? I did really like the shadows. The “Smokin Hot” contained great New Year’s Eve (or any party!) shades: white, silvery grey and sparkely black. They were very pigmented and I would try some other POP Beauty eyeshadows if I can find them in Canada.

The only big “fail” from this month’s bag was the Be a Bombshell The One Stick. I had been really impressed with the Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon from last month’s Glam Bag. The One Stick is obviously a take on NARS’ The Multiple. Be a Bombshell says you can use it on “eyelids, cheeks or lips for the perfect pop of color anywhere! Apply as you would regular eyeshadow, blush or lip gloss.” Yeah…not so much. This smooshy, greasy, glittery thing didn’t work on my cheeks, eyelids OR lips. Just awful.

The total retail value of the December bag (minus the POP Beauty eyeshadow which I couldn’t find a price for) was: $34.56. So, for $16 this bag had significantly less value than last month’s $108 Glam Bag.
