Quebec City Trip: Sephora & the Fluevog Store

Old Quebec City

Old Quebec City in May

Hi everyone! In May, the fiance had a folklore conference at Université Laval in Quebec City so I decided to tag along. The amount of traveling I have been doing lately has gotten me seriously behind on my blogging. Quebec is our french-speaking province, and Quebec City (the capital with a population of about 500,000) dates back to the 1600s. Its so beautiful and it feels like you’re in Europe. I thought you might like to see a few pics from my trip before I delve into the goodies I picked up while I was there. Continue reading

St. John’s Sephora & Lancome Juicy Shakers

St. John's Sephora

The first Sephora opened in my province in 2015

One of the most exciting things to happen in Newfoundland last year (well in the beauty blogging community anyhow) was that our very first Sephora store opened. Sadly for me, it remains an 8 hour drive away, but while I was in St. John’s to present at a conference, I finally got a chance to go to the new location. I really didn’t go for anything in particular. I just wanted to check out the store. Apparently I visit Sephoras like some people visit other touristy landmarks. The staff there were super nice, and I asked a SA how the store was doing. She said Sephora is shocked at how much business its doing and that sales are way beyond expectations, which I thought was pretty cool. Way to go fellow Canadian beauty product lovers!

While I was there, what did catch my eye was the display of the new Lancome  Juicy Shakers. Continue reading

Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Fig

Another Sephora spring sale purchase: a Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick!

Its taken me so long to get around to blogging about all of the different things I got in the Sephora spring sale, but I really wanted to thoroughly test out the Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick before I reviewed it. I’m very particular about lipsticks and after my High-end Lipstick Review Series, I like to give a new lipstick a real good try before I write about it. Smashbox recently revamped their Be Legendary lipsticks and added some new shades (in total there are 18 shades in the cream finish, and 18 in the matte finish). I’d quite liked the Smashbox Be Legendary Long Wear Lip Lacquer that I’d tried, so I was really curious to try the newly re-formulated cream lipstick out. Continue reading

Some New Bite Beauty Lip Products

Bite Beauty Maple Agave Lip Mask, Amuse Bouche Lipstick, Whipped Cherry Fruit Scrub review

Maple Agave Lip Mask, Amuse Bouche Lipstick, Whipped Cherry Fruit Scrub

Hey everyone! I have been away on vacation (in sunny Jamaica!) but I’m back and have quite a few things to post about that I picked up in the spring Sephora sale before I left. Canadian brand Bite Beauty known for its lip products made from natural, organic, food-grade ingredients that are “good enough to eat” recently came out with a new line of Amuse Bouche lipsticks. I loved the Bite products I’ve tried so far, including their Luminous Creme lipstick in the shade Cava, and their Agave Lip Masks. During the Sephora sale I wanted to try out one of the new Amuse Bouche lipsticks and I couldn’t help add a couple of additional Bite products to my cart. Continue reading

A Great Way to Start the Day: MAC Fresh Brew

MAC Fresh Brew lustre lipstick
Hi everyone! Just a little ode to one of my newest favourite MAC lipsticks. I ordered Fresh Brew online, mostly because it was a brown-toned lustre lipstick (my absolute favourite finish) and who isn’t totally obsessed with the 1990s brown lip at the moment, am I right? Described as “creamed coffee”, Fresh Brew is a true brown on fair skin (not too warm and not too cool) with a beautiful, semi-sheer, slightly glossy finish. I think on darker skin tones this would be a beautiful nude lipstick. Continue reading

Giving Matte Lipstick Another “Whirl”

MAC Whirl lipstick
I have never been a big matte lip product girl, but MAC’s Whirl lip pencil is one of my favs. Its the perfect warm, pinky-brown nude that you can fill your lips in with or use with all kinds of different lipstick shades. When I heard that MAC was coming out with a lipstick version of Whirl lip pencil, I was intrigued…until I learned that it would be a matte finish lipstick. Would my love for Whirl be enough to overcome my general dislike of matte lipsticks? Continue reading

Did Sephora Samples Make me Want to Buy it or Skip it? (Part 3: Mascaras & Lip Products)

For part 3 of my Did Samples Make me Want to Buy it or Skip it? I’m reviewing mascara and lip product samples I received. These were some really good samples!

bareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balm in Plumberry Pop

Plumberry Pop

bareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balm Plumberry Pop swatch

Plumberry Pop

bareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil-Balm ($20 CAD): I was totally excited to try this 100 point sample of the new tinted “lip oil-balm” from bareMinerals. I really like tinted lip balms. There are so many things I love about this, I don’t know where to begin! I love the packaging. Its super cute and the colour of the packaging matches the shade, which I always find handy. The Pop of Passion lip-oil balms come in 8 different shades. I’m really enjoying the shade I received, Plumberry Pop, a pinky-red, but I want to try out all of the other shades now! This oil-balm applies a wash of colour combined with the light, hydrating feel of a lip balm. It feels moisturizing on the lips, but also leaves behind a super long-lasting stain. It reminds me of the Benefit Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm (my beloved rose coloured Benebalm is in my empties) or the Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me (but without the sweet fruity scent). If you are into tinted lip balms, I think you’ll love this! Verdict: Buy it. Continue reading

3 New Additions to my MAC Lipstick Collection

three new MAC lipsticks
Hi everyone, I’m back! February has not been a good month and I have not been blogging. My fiance’s daughter, who was traveling abroad, was involved in a serious accident (she is now ok) and he had to rush to be with her. As you can imagine it was a stressful time for us and our families. It really made beauty blogging take a backseat. To make blogging matters worse, my trusty old hot pink Dell laptop that I’ve had since 2008 gave up and I had to get a new laptop. I am finally back up and ready to blog again! I have many, many things to review and share with you so my goal is to get back on a regular schedule. Continue reading

Too Faced La Creme Lipstick Review

Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in Pink Chocolate
When I was visiting my sister in Halifax recently, she had gotten a new lipstick, the Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lipstick in the shade Sweet Maple, a very 1990s-brown shade, and she loved it. I had never tried any of the Too Faced lippies before, and it looked so pretty! I wanted one of my own. I swatched some of the shades in Sephora, and picked the shade Pink Chocolate, a “berry brown.” I was a little disappointed that they didn’t carry the full shade selection in-store, at least at the location I went to. They only had 12 of the 24 shades available on the Sephora website. Continue reading

Chanel Vamp Attitude Holiday 2015 Collection

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in #18 Rouge Noir and Rouge Allure Intense Long-wear Lip Colour in #109 Rouge Noir

Chanel Le Vernis/Nail Colour in #18 Rouge Noir and Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in #109 Rouge Noir

When I read that Chanel was coming out with a holiday collection inspired by their iconic 1990s shade Vamp, I was so excited! According to Chanel “In 1994, a uniquely striking Le Vernis shade was revealed on the Chanel Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear runway, and a legend was born. This year, a gleaming Holiday colour collection celebrates the rebellious black-red, ‘Vamp’ — the shade that became an icon.” I have ranted about my coming-of-age in the 1990s love of Vamp nail polish previously. I knew I needed the lipstick and nail polish in the Vamp-inspired shade Rouge Noir.

While I was in Ottawa for work just before Christmas, I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique in the Rideau Centre and I was so happy that they had both the lipstick and the nail polish in stock. Both are LE. Continue reading

When Your BF Goes to Sephora for Christmas

When your fiance goes to Sephora to get you Christmas presents

When your fiance goes to Sephora to get you some Christmas pressies…

Happy holidays everyone! I have been pretty much AWOL this December. I had a sensitive family matter occur that required me to suddenly go out of town (it has been a stressful month), and then I also had to travel for work. I returned home with literally nothing done for Christmas. I decorated a tree and did some shopping 3 days before Christmas! I was so unprepared this year. I pretty much failed at Christmassing. I hope everyone else had a much more stress-free holiday than I did 🙂

I did have a lovely Christmas day with my fiance though. I couldn’t resist sharing this story of his adventure in Sephora. He was out-of-town in December as well, and when he was in Ontario, for the first time he actually ventured into a Sephora seeking some Christmas presents for me. He is aware that I have a lot of makeup, so he told me that he asked the SA for the most “obscure tools” they sold, that I would be unlikely to already have. This question apparently earned him a very blank look from the poor SA! Here’s what he chose all by himself after wandering around the store: Continue reading

Why I Won’t Be Reordering from NYX Canada

I’m so sorry to have to do a *negative* post, but I feel like all my Canadian peeps need to hear an honest review of my experience with the new NYX Canada site, www.nyxcosmetics.ca. I was thrilled when I heard NYX had launched the new site with shipping within Canada in Canadian dollars, and free shipping on orders over $45. I had been wanting to try the new NYX High Definition Blushes and while on the site I noticed the new Simply Lip Creams (Nude, Pink and Vamp) and thought I would try out some of those too.

I’m a fan of the brand and have posted about my love for their old line of blushes, the Butter Glosses, and the new Hot Singles Eye Shadows, among other products. So I’m pretty bummed to have to give my experience ordering from NYX Canada a huge thumbs down. I order makeup online frequently. I live in a small town where not a lot is available except online. I order regularly from MAC and Sephora, and have placed orders everywhere from Amazon.ca, to American sites like Nordstrom, Cherry Culture, Makeup Geek, Besame, Charlotte Tilbury, to UK sites like Rouge Bunny Rouge. I have never received any damaged items. Nothing prepared me for receiving my NYX Canada order. Continue reading

Two New Additions to my Mirror Compact Collection

Revlon Love is On Lipstick and Compact Set and Sephora Jem Truly Outrageous Compact
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before that I collect mirror compacts. I think its a bit of an odd thing to collect I suppose. I kind of feel like an evil queen – so vain and evil that I collect mirrors! I especially love the Sephora LE compacts but they often sell out almost instantly. I have been on the “email me when in stock” list for the Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror for weeks now. When I finally received an email, I immediately went online and ordered one (its already showing as “out of stock” again online). Continue reading

The Body Shop Makeup Review

The Body Shop makeup review

I picked up some of The Body Shop lip and cheek products

A little while ago, I attended a fundraiser for my local women’s centre and I won a gift basket that contained, among other things, a $25 gift card for The Body Shop. As you guys probably know, I have super sensitive skin and cannot use scented products, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to try out some more of The Body Shop’s makeup line. I have only ever tried their Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder, which works great on fair skin, and their Honey Bronze Shimmer Lip Balm. I recently popped in and they were having a buy one get one free sale. The SA was very helpful and assisted me with sanitizing and trying on several things, and I decided on a few of their lip and cheek products.

I am a blush-addict, so of course I had to try one of their All in One Blushers: “This extra-fine powder blusher gives smooth, buildable colour and has great staying power. With ingredients including vitamin E and marula oil, it’s make-up and skincare in one.” I picked the shade  #01 Macaroon, a pale peachy shade with a satin finish – not entirely matte, but with a hint of sheen. In love with Lovelorn

MAC Lovelorn lipstick
I was already in love with MAC’s lustre finish lipsticks, but my latest find, MAC Lovelorn lipstick is totally swoon-inducing. As someone with cool, pink undertones in my skin and quite a lot of pink in my lips, I find pink lipsticks tricky. Its hard for me to find pinks that don’t look totally crazy on me, with something like MAC’s Angel being one of the few exceptions.

Lovelorn is cryptically described as an “emotive blue-pink” (um, what colour is “emotive”?). It’s basically a light, cool-toned pink with slightly mauvey undertones that looks very natural on fair skin, which is really hard to find. Continue reading

The Most Unique Lipstick Shade

Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick

My first Bite Beauty lipstick!

Bite Beauty is a Canadian brand available exclusively through Sephora, that makes lip products made from food-grade ingredients that are “good enough to eat.” Bite lip products are handcrafted one at a time and contain natural and certified organic ingredients. I have seen such amazing reviews of this brand, and the last time I was in Sephora I swatched many of the shades wanting to try one out. I fell in love with the Luminous Creme lipstick in the shade Cava, but was disappointed that they were sold out of the shade (although that’s always a good sign a colour is popular!). I recently placed an online order and added Cava to my cart. Continue reading

Two Drugstore Lippies: Riche & Buttery

L'Oreal Color Riche Extraordinaire Lip Color and NYX Butter LipstickI know neither of these lip products are new to the drugstore, but both are new to me. It took a while for the NYX Butter Lipsticks to show up at my local drugstore, even though they’ve been out for ages now (sometimes living in small-town Canada has its disadvantages). I also had never been drawn to the L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche Lip Color until recently when I saw My Exquisite World‘s review. So I picked up one of each the last time I was at Lawton’s.

I am in love with the L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche Lip Color in the shade Molto Mauve. Not like a sticky gloss at all, these are more of a light, glossy liquid lipstick. Its super easy to apply and I can’t believe how long it stays on! It also wears off very evenly and in the prettiest way (unlike some liquid lip products).

L'Oreal Extraordinaire Color Riche Lip Color in 500 Molto Mauve

L’Oreal Extraordinaire Color Riche Lip Color in 500 Molto Mauve

Look how pretty this pinky nude shade is. On me, Molto Mauve is a my-lips-but-better type of shade. I am loving it for a natural, summertime look. Thanks for the recommendation Pooja! 🙂

L'Oreal Extraordinaire Color Riche Molto Mauve

Molto Mauve

The L’Oreal Extraordinaire does have a slight scent, but doesn’t smell like the L’Oreal Color Riche lipsticks which I really dislike the scent of. These have also been called a dupe for the YSL Glossy Stains, but I haven’t tried them so I wouldn’t know. Leave me a comment if you’ve tried both. Are they similar?

NYX Butter Lipstick in BLS11 Licorice

NYX Butter Lipstick in BLS11 Licorice

The second lip product I’m not as in love with. I’m a huge fan of the NYX Butter Glosses, so in fairness, I had high expectations. I think the word “Butter” in the product name had me anticipating something different. I’m not finding this lipstick buttery. I feel like it has a formula more similar to the MAC creamsheens, and I find both can feel a bit drying on my lips. The finish is a bit flat and very opaque and after wearing it for a while I almost felt like I was wearing a matte lipstick. I think a lot of people would totally go for this but the Butter Lipstick just isn’t really the type of formula I typically like. If you’re looking for something long-wearing, this would also work for you, especially the vampy burgundy shade, Licorice, that I tried.

swatch NYX Butter Lipstick in Licorice

Licorice

What I did enjoy about the Butter Lipsticks was the packaging – how great is it that the colour of each tube matches the lipstick shade? – and the scent. The Butter Lipstick has the same yummy, sugary, edible scent as the Butter Glosses. Mmm!

The L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche Lip Color is a slightly pricey for drugstore $13.49 CAD, but I really love it. The NYX Butter Lipsticks are a very reasonable $8.99 CAD.

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat

Not only is Charlotte Tilbury available in Canada now and super easy to order from their Canadian website, there was free shipping on all orders for the whole month of July. I’ve been dying to try the lip products. I love lip liners. They’re one of my favourite makeup items. The Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner was on my wish list.

When my order arrived, I was so impressed with the packaging!

Charlotte Tilbury Packaging

Nice packaging!

I tried the shade Iconic Nude, a fairly brown nude with a 1990’s feel to it.

Charlotte Tilbury Iconic Nude Lip Cheat

Swatch Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Iconic Nude

Iconic Nude

The Lip Cheat description says “rich, velvety lip liner glides effortlessly over the lips” and “lasts up to 6 hours.” This liner is very smooth and creamy and easy to apply. Once its on, its not going anywhere! It is really long wearing and smudge-proof. Iconic Nude would go with a lot of lip colours. You could also fill in your lips with it and top it with a bit of lip balm or gloss.

I have a lot of lip liners and I was unable to find a dupe for Iconic Nude. Here it is swatched next to some other popular nude lip liners like Too Faced Perfect Nude, and MAC Spice, Stone, and Subculture. Its a unique shade.

Swatch Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Iconic Nude compared to Too Faced Perfect Nude, MAC Spice, MAC Stone, and MAC Subculture

Iconic Nude compared to Too Faced Perfect Nude, MAC Spice, MAC Stone, and MAC Subculture

Now I really want the shades Pillow Talk and Pink Venus! Charlotte Tilbury is seriously not helping my lip liner problem. I’m also dying to try the blushes.

The Lip Cheats are $27.00 CAD, and the CT website is entirely in Canadian dollars so no scary exchange rates. I was really happy with the shipping (which was free!) and there were no surprise additional charges.

I also ordered a lipstick which I will be reviewing soon as part of my High-end Lipstick Review Series & Giveaway, so stay tuned for that. I’d love to hear what your favourite Charlotte Tilbury product is!

5 Mini Lippies: Did Samples Convince Me to Buy it or Skip it?

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss, Benefit Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss, Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss, Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain, Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer

Miniature Lippies are the cutest!

I love anything miniature. I couldn’t resist a post about these cute little mini lippie samples that have piled up. The best thing about getting samples of a product is you can decide for free whether its something you’d like to buy or something you’d rather skip. Here’s what I decided about these five samples.

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in Bare Sparkle

Baby Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in Bare Sparkle

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss in Bare Sparkle ($30.00 CAD): The first thing I didn’t like about this lip gloss was the very strong minty scent and taste. I know some people like that, but I’m not a fan. Its also super sticky! Again, some folks don’t mind a sticky lip gloss but this is another thing I’m not a fan of. It did look really pretty applied and reminded me of my favourite Rimmel Stay Glossy in Non-Stop Glamour. If you don’t mind the stickiness and the mint flavour, its a shimmery nude that you could pop over any lip liner or lipstick. But be warned – this lip gloss is nearly impossible to remove and leaves a lot of glitter behind. Plus you could pick up the Rimmel for much less. Verdict: Skip it.

Benefit Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss

Baby Benefit Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss

Benefit Coralista Ultra Plush Lip Gloss ($21.00 CAD): I liked the concept of the Ultra Plush glosses matching the Benefit best-selling boxed powders. I feel like the packaging was a bit disappointing though. The plastic squeeze-tube feels more drugstore than a $20+ lip product should. I don’t like applying coloured glosses out of these because I find it trickier to get a precise and even application. I also found this gloss very sheer. Maybe its the shade, but it didn’t show up on me very well. Finally, the scent of this was odd too. Instead of having a matching scent as the Coralista blush, this just had that slightly chemical, medicated lip balm smell. Verdict: Skip it.

Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss in 202 Sweet Pink

Baby Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss #202 Sweet Pink

Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss #202 Sweet Pink ($23.00 CAD): This gloss is seriously shiny! I liked that it doesn’t have any scent and is really long-wearing. Even the sample packaging feels high-end and is real glass vs plastic. The only downside is that its a little on the sticky side. But if you like a shiny lip gloss look, the Make Up For Ever has 35 shades, super cute packaging and is more reasonably priced than the Bobbi Brown. Verdict: Buy it.

Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain #10 Red Essence

Baby Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain #10 Red Essence

Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain #10 Red Essence ($18.00 CAD): This may literally be the worst lip product I’ve ever tried! First there’s the awful chemically-raspberry smell. Then, this stain was impossible to apply! It was so uneven, patchy and awful. It also felt really dry and uncomfortable. Just the worst. Verdict: Skip it.

Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer in Coral

Baby Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer in Coral

Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer in Coral
($28.00 CAD): This is a really neat product described as a “long-wear, lip-hybrid formula with high-impact staining pigments for color that goes on as a lacquer and then adjusts to a stain for eight hours of color.” Its more a liquid lipstick than a gloss. Its really easy to apply and goes on smoothly and evenly. Its long-wearing, wears off really pretty and leaves behind a serious stain. The lip lacquer has a slight scent of coconut and no taste. The shade, Coral, is not a great shade for me, but I would love to try some of the others, like Keepsake, a cool mauve pink or Off Duty, a nude pink brown. Verdict: Buy it.

Here are swatches of all five:

NARS Lip Pencils: Satin, Velvet Matte & Velvet Gloss

NARS Lip Pencils

NARS Lip Pencils

Just a short post about the NARS Lip Pencils I have. I received two of the NARS Lip Pencils as my Sephora VIB Birthday Reward and I have also purchased one. I have one in each of the finishes: Velvet Matte, Velvet Gloss and Satin:

  • Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, a blue-red
  • Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover, described as a “gold infused strawberry pink”
  • Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien, a mauvey-pink
NARS Lip Pencils Velvet Matte Cruella, Velvet Gloss New Lover, and Satin Rikugien

Velvet Matte Cruella, Velvet Gloss New Lover, & Satin Rikugien

My favourite is definitely the Satin Lip Pencil. I love the finish of this one the best. Rikugien is such a pretty, wearable my lips but better type of shade. The Velvet Gloss is a little too frosty for me. Cruella is the right shade of red for me, but I’m generally not a huge fan of matte finish lip products.

swatches NARS Lip Pencils Velvet Matte Cruella, Velvet Gloss New Lover, and Satin Rikugien

Velvet Matte Cruella, Velvet Gloss New Lover, and Satin Rikugien

The thing I like about the NARS Lip Pencils is that they are completely unscented. I’m not a big fan of other NARS lip products I’ve tried (like the lipsticks and lipgloss) but I really like the Satin Lip Pencil. I would totally get more of these. I have two on my wishlist, Biscayne Park and Het Loo, two gorgeous nude shades!

Brand Spotlight: #Annabelle Cosmetics Review

Annabelle Cosmetics eye shadows

Annabelle Cosmetics eye shadows

Annabelle is a Canadian drugstore brand based in Montreal that began in the 1960s. Most of their makeup products are actually made in Canada. I have already blogged about my love of the Annabelle lip liners, which are some of my favourite lip liners ever and very similar to the MAC lip liners. One of the things I like most about Annabelle is that their makeup has no scent or fragrance and is great for sensitive skin. I thought I’d do a brand spotlight to talk about some of the best Annabelle makeup products I’ve been trying out and also one that was a “miss” for me.

First up are the Annabelle eye shadows. This brand has quite an impressive selection for a drugstore brand as well as lots of good neutral shades (also hard to find at the drugstore). The Annabelle Quad Eyeshadow in Java Jive with the four shades Cream, Camel, Beige, & Brown is an awesome neutral palette.

Annabelle Quad eye shadow in Java Jive

Annabelle Quad eye shadow in Java Jive

The quad itself didn’t photograph well and all of the pics I took of it are showing as way too cool and purpley toned (sorry!), but the swatches, below, are more accurate.

swatches annabelle java jive quad

Java Jive quad: Cream, Camel, Beige, & Brown

None of the four shadows are overly shimmery. They just have a bit of sheen and the darkest Brown shade is pretty matte. I like using the Cream shade to blend out with and on my brow bone. Its very light which is perfect for my fair skin. I can do an eye look with just this quad alone.

Annabelle Trio eye shadow in Haute Chocolate

Annabelle Trio eye shadow in Haute Chocolate

The cool-toned neutral Trio Eyeshadow in Haute Chocolate was another awesome find!

swatches Haute Chocolate Trio

Haute Chocolate Trio

Both the quad and trio I tried are very long-wearing and don’t crease on me (I always use an eye shadow primer). There are 5 other quads and 9 other trios to choose from! My favourite though are the Annabelle Single Eyeshadows which totally remind me of the MAC eye shadows. These are made in Canada and come in 15 shades.

Annabelle Single Eye Shadows

Annabelle Single Eyeshadows look remarkably like the MAC eye shadows

I have three of these: #225 Ivory, Suedine, and #127 Brown Frost.

swatches annabelle Single Eyeshadows in #225 Ivory, Suedine, & #127 Brown Frost

Single Eyeshadows in #225 Ivory, Suedine, & #127 Brown Frost

Ivory is basically a dupe for MAC Brule. Suedine (french for “Suede”) is a gorgeous neutral taupey-brown, and Brown Frost is a good, medium, cool-toned brown, and both have the prettiest (non-shimmery) sheen. The Singles are so soft, easy to work with and long-wearing they perform like high-end eye shadows.

I was also brave and tried one of their TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayons. I don’t typically have much luck with creamy eye shadows, but the shade Taupe, a slightly metallic, golden shade that wasn’t too warm-toned for me was calling my name.

Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayon in Taupe

Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayon in Taupe

swatch Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayon in Taupe

Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayon in Taupe

I have used this on its own and under the Annabelle shadows and remarkably it hasn’t been creasing on me! I could barely get the swatch off my hand. Once these puppies are set, they aren’t going anywhere! Taupe is a beautiful, flattering shade that’s along the lines of MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl. Its like a browner, more coppery version of Powersurge.

The Annabelle Blushon powder blushes also bear a striking resemblance to the MAC blushes and are also Canadian made.

Annabelle blushes

Annabelle blushes are like mini MAC blushes!

I have #44 Rose Fawn and #32 Pronto.

Annabelle blushes (L-R): #44 and #32

Annabelle blushes (L-R): #44 Rose Fawn and #32 Pronto

swatches Annabelle blushes #44 and #32

Annabelle blushes (L-R): #44 Rose Fawn and #32 Pronto

Rose Fawn is soft, cool-toned pink that is nearly matte with only a hint of sheen. It really reminds me of the feel and the quality of the MAC blushes. Its really pretty on fair skin and lasts all day. I’ve worn this one a lot.

One miss: I absolutely loved Pronto, the pale, neutral rosey-taupe type of blush shade I love, but sadly Pronto turned out to be a miss for me. It looks beautiful when first applied but it seriously oxidized on me and by the end of the day it was way darker and completely, straight up-bronzer brown. My BF even asked me what I had on my face. I didn’t have any issues with Rose Fawn oxidizing.

Another favourite of mine are the Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Lipstick Crayons. I have the shades Romance a nude, mauvey pink and Vamp a deep, burgundy-plum.

Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Lipstick Crayons

Romance and Vamp

These really remind me of the MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils (I’ve reviewed Kittenish and Spontaneous, and Sultana). Side note: How excited are you that MAC is coming out with more Patentpolish Lip Pencils in new colours???!!! The Annabelle Lipstick Crayons feel creamy and comfortable like a lip balm and you can pop them on without a mirror, but they stay on for hours. I mean, look how pretty they are:

Annabelle is available in most drugstores – Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, Rexall, Lawton’s Drugs – and Wal-Mart and Loblaws. If you are in the United States the Annabelle.ca site ships to the continental US, but doesn’t currently ship internationally. Here’s what I paid (yup bought all these myself and I’m not affiliated with the company in any way) for these Annabelle makeup items:

Prices
Annabelle Quad Eyeshadow: $10.95 CAD
Annabelle Trio Eyeshadow: $7.95 CAD
Anabelle Single Eyeshadow: $5.95 CAD
Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Eyeshadow Crayon: $9.95 CAD
Annabelle Blushon: $7.95 CAD
Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Lipstick Crayon: $9.95 CAD

I’d love to hear if you’ve tried the brand and if you have a favourite Annabelle product!

High-end Lipstick Review Series: Chantecaille

Chantecaille Lip Chic

Chantecaille Lip Chic

This is the second last post in my High-end Lipstick Review Series! I have only one more lipstick left to review and then its time for me to give away the highest scoring high-end lipstick to a subscriber in a shade of their choice!

While I was in Ottawa for a conference, I visited the Rideau Centre – a fabulous shopping destination – and was delighted to discover that a Nordstrom had just recently opened, the first one in Canada. I knew the Nordstrom website carried Chantecaille and shipped to Canada through Borderfree, but would they have it in store? Yes they did! I actually got to swatch the Lip Chic shades that I’d previously only been able to obsess over online.

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Camellia

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Camellia

I selected the shade, Camellia, a pale, cool-toned peachy-pink. I had been on a bit of a vampy lip colour spree lately and felt like I already had a lot of darker shades, so I was in the mood for something light and summery (maybe it was the warm Ottawa weather?).

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Camellia

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Camellia

I would caution that Camellia is very light, and although my ghostly-white self is enjoying this shade, it likely wouldn’t show up well on people with very pigmented lips or deeper skin tones.

Camellia swatched

I paid $42.00 CAD in-store for the Lip Chic and was pretty psyched to not have paid any shipping costs or duty. On the Nordstrom site they’re charging $48.02 CAD plus $18.89 CAD for shipping and $10.13 CAD in duties & taxes for an astounding $77.04 CAD in total!!!

I also have to note that the Chantecaille Lip Chic is a fairly small lipstick and has less product than a MAC lipstick for example.

Chantecaille Lip Chic versus MAC lipstick

Less product: The Chantecaille Lip Chic is 2 g versus a 3 g MAC lipstick

Let’s start the review…

Packaging
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

Although certainly not as flashy as some of the other high-end brands, like YSL, Dior, Armani or Guerlain for instance, I did like the Chantecaille packaging. I thought the lavender shade of the box was unique. I can appreciate a minimalist type of design. The small, gunmetalish silver tube was a little plain but still felt weighty and snapped shut very securely like a high-end lipstick should. 2/3 Duchess points

Formula
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

Loved the formula of the Lip Chic! Its very rich, pushing the boundaries to almost being sticky (but isn’t sticky) its so lip-balmy and moisturizing. It contains Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Sulfate which evidently hydrates your lips. The Lip Chic is sheer and very glossy compared to the Chantecaille Lip Stick I also swatched. Chantecaille describes the Lip Chic as the “perfect combination of gloss and lipstick” and I couldn’t agree more. It basically gives the effect of a lip gloss without all the stickiness and messiness of lip gloss (I am so OVER having my hair and just about everything else sticking to lip gloss). I love to fill in my lips with a nude lip liner, like MAC Subculture or Whirl, or Annabelle Demure, and top it with Camellia Lip Chic. 3/3 Duchess points

Wear
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

Again in terms of wear its the perfect combination of gloss and lipstick. I don’t normally find lip gloss long wearing. The Lip Chic is super shiny and glossy but long wearing like a lipstick. No idea how they did that! 3/3 Duchess points

Scent/Taste
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

The Lip Chic has a light vanilla scent, similar to the MAC lipsticks and no discernible taste. What more could you ask for? 3/3 Duchess points

Sensitivity Test
I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks now and it has not irritated my lips at all. No Duchess points deducted

MAC Test
I like the Lip Chic as much as I like my MAC lipsticks. Neutral Duchess points

Would I pay for another one?
Here’s where it gets tricky to answer. I would love to have more of the Lip Chics in some of the other shades. If I could purchase them in-store for $42 CAD I would. The problem is, only 4 stores in the entire country carry Chantecaille and none are remotely close to where I live. Realistically, for me to purchase another Lip Chic I would be looking at ordering it online through Nordstrom, and I would NOT pay $77 CAD for another one. I’m unlikely to be re-purchasing any.

I wish I could deem the Lip Chics splurge-worthy and award them an additional Duchess point putting them in second place overall. However at $77, for me they would not be worth it. If you happen to live in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary or Vancouver where you can purchase them at Holt Renfrew or Nordstrom, I would recommend giving Chantecaille a try.

High-end Lipstick Review Series: Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in PetalI’m back with the 15th lipstick in my High-end Lipstick Review Series! Can you believe its been that many? I’m in the home stretch now, and only have one or two more brands I’d like to include before declaring a winner. Then one of my subscribers will get a lipstick from the winning brand in a shade of their choice! So stay tuned.

This review is of the Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick. D&G only started a cosmetic line in 2009, so its relatively new. I haven’t tried anything from D&G before, except a pair of sunglasses (which I love). I ordered this lipstick online from Sephora in the shade Petal, a “neutral lilac rose” which I think is a fairly good description.

The D&G lipsticks are $32 CAD. Let’s see how it did!

Packaging
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

This didn’t really strike me as high-end packaging. The tube was plain and fairly lightweight plastic (although it did snap shut securely). I’m not a huge fan of all gold either. It really reminded me of a drugstore lipstick, like the L’Oreal Color Riche or the Milani Color Statement lipsticks. 1/3 Duchess points

Formula
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

I thought the formula of this lipstick was ok. It didn’t wow me. It was a fairly traditional “lipstick” type of formula – a little thick, very opaque – and it had a bit of a matte finish. Although it felt creamy, it really accentuated any dryness on my lips. Not my favourite. 1/3 Duchess points

Wear
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

I can’t fault this lipstick on wear. The traditional formula was long-wearing, but I found it a little drying on the lips. 2/3 Duchess points

Scent/Taste
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

As soon as I opened this lipstick, I was immediately struck by the scent. It smells EXACTLY like the L’Oreal Color Riche lipsticks. I’d tried the Color Riche in Fairest Nude, a beautiful shade, but I just could not get past the scent and passed it on to my sister. Its a weird, artificial scent combined with a “your grandmother’s old lipstick” type of scent. Bleck!

I also became very suspicious that overall, this lipstick is so similar to the much less expensive L’Oreal Color Riche.

L'Oreal Color Riche a dupe for the Dolce & Gabbana lipstick

Is the L’Oreal Color Riche a dupe for the D&G lipstick?

Even the pointed shape of the lipstick itself with the logo engraved just below the tip is eerily similar. After some internet research, it doesn’t seem like the two companies are affiliated. I can’t believe that these two lipsticks aren’t made in the exact same factory though.

But, back to the scent: 1/3 Duchess points

Sensitivity Test
Despite the terrible scent and slightly drying qualities of this lipstick, I don’t believe it irritated my lips.

MAC Test
negative 1 duchess point

I liked this lipstick WAY less than a MAC lipstick. -1 Duchess point

Would I pay $32 CAD for another Dolce & Gabbana lipstick?
negative 1 duchess point

Nope! Not a chance. I think you can get the exact same lipstick (awful scent and all) at the drugstore for a quarter of the price.

Dolce & Gabbana Total Score: 3/14

Drugstore Swap with ChromaMeSilly!

US drugstore makeup swap

Fabulous drugstore goodies from Miami. Thanks Thalia!

I recently did a swap with the lovely Thalia from ChromaMeSilly who lives in the U.S. Our theme was favourite lip and cheek products from the drugstore. I sent her some Canadian brands, like Annabelle, Quo and Marcelle, and she sent me brands that are hard to get where I live. She sent me such a nice package! I thought I’d share some of the neat things I received.

I was excited about the Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and the Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss. Hard Candy is apparently available in Canada at WalMart, but my local WalMart doesn’t stock much make-up so I’ve never tried anything from them. I absolutely love the packaging! How cute is this for a drugstore brand?

Hard Candy Contouring Face trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

I love the Contouring Face Trio in 839 3rd Wheel. The way I’ve generally been using it is to swirl my blush brush and use all three shades mixed together, but if I just want to pick up some highlight or blush, a pretty peachy-pink, that works too.

I also love the Hard Candy Volumizing Lip Gloss in 916 Magic Mauve. I was nervous at first about the “plumping” part because I can be so sensitive, but I don’t think this lip product has any of those ingredients that intentionally irritates your lips to make them plumper. I just feels a little bit cool. Magic Mauve is a beautiful, nude pink. The formula of this is not like a gloss, but more like a liquid lipstick and the scent reminds me of MAC lipsticks. It isn’t sticky at all and has a very natural-looking finish. It also wears off in the prettiest way of any lip product ever. This is my favourite  item I received and I’d love to have more shades. Great pick Thalia!

The next brand she sent me was e.l.f. I’ve never seen e.l.f. in any Canadian stores (if you know of anywhere to purchase it, please let me know) although there are a few websites that ship it to Canada but I haven’t tried ordering from them before. So many bloggers and YouTubers rave about e.l.f. I was really excited to try these too.

e.l.f.

e.l.f. products!

I received:

  • e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia
  • e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine
  • e.l.f Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit
  • e.l.f Essential Clear Brow & Lash Mascara
e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

I had heard about the Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia, which I think was being called a dupe for the NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo in Orgasm/Laguna. The packaging sure is similar. I was so impressed with this! The blush is beautiful and stays on all day without fading.

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

The Matte Lip Color and the Lip Balm Tint are two more fabulous lip product selections from Miss Thalia. I’m not normally a huge fan of matte lip products, but the e.l.f. is an exception. The Matte Lip Color is more like a lip stain, similar to the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains, only not glossy. It doesn’t dry out my lips at all. I always love a tinted lip balm, and both of these worn together is a beautiful lip combo.

Check out the extreme prettiness of these swatches:

swatch e.l.f. St. Lucia Blush & Bronzer, Wine Matte Lip Color, & Grapefruit Lip Balm Tint

e.l.f. St. Lucia Blush & Bronzer, Wine Matte Lip Color, & Grapefruit Lip Balm Tint

Finally, I also received two more lip balms. Anyone who knows me, knows of my lip balm addiction. I have one in every room, in my car, in my office drawers, everywhere! Neutrogena cosmetics aren’t available in Canada, so I loved that I got their Moisture Shine Lip Soother. I also have a thing about goat’s milk (see my post about my favourite soap) so the Dionis Goat Milk Skincare Lip Balm seemed made for me and also has awesome ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. I’m now on a mission to find out if Dionis products are available in Canada.

I really enjoyed swapping with you Thalia! Loved everything you sent me. I’d recommend checking out Thalia’s blog.
