Well, hello again! It has been quite some time since my last post. Since May 1, I have been on a one-year sabbatical from my regular Librarian job. As awesome as this is, it has meant that I have been very busy traveling and doing research. It also means that I am on reduced salary, so I have basically been on a no-buy and have really been avoiding makeup blogs, social media and YouTube in order to not be tempted! Working from home, I’ve also not been wearing makeup on the daily, so my blog has definitely been neglected. Somehow, I still was unable to avoid the news that Urban Decay was releasing a new eye shadow palette, and when I heard it was cherry themed, it literally made me break my no-buy. Continue reading

As promised, after my annual trip to Toronto, I’m back with some of the goodies I got at MAC. As I mentioned in my last post, I always make time to go to the Eaton’s Centre and hit the Sephora and MAC because there is no Sephora or MAC near where I live. As much as I adore online shopping, I find its always way better to get to see the products in person, check out what’s new, and get advice from the people who work there who really know the products. MAC is such a fun store to go into in person. I had some things I needed to restock, enough empties for a Back-to-MAC freebie, and I was also on a mission to find a pale blue/green eye shadow. Recently I had to go to Toronto for work and I knew that while I was there I absolutely had to go to the Bite Lip Lab. Bite Beauty is a Canadian company and all of their lip products are made in small batches from food-grade ingredients, i.e good and safe enough to eat (hence the name “Bite”). I have many of their products, like their Lip Scrub, Amuse Bouche Lipsticks, Lip Pencils and new Multisticks. The really cool thing is that they also have Lip Labs in Toronto, San Francisco and New York, where you can get custom made lipsticks! How cool is that?
Here is a quick little video I made to give you an idea of how mind-blowingly awesome it is to have your very own lipsticks made just for you right before your eyes:
In Canada, one of our largest national drugstore chains, Shoppers Drug Mart, has a rewards program called Optimum points. The points you earn have a cash value and can be redeemed for most any items in the store for up to a maximum of $170 CAD. My favourite way to redeem my points is at their beautyBOUTIQUE, which carries high-end brands. There are lots of beautyBOUTIQUE locations in Canada, like the big one in the Eaton’s Centre, but just not near where I live. Luckily you can order online! They’re changing the Optimum program and merging it with another points program this month, so last month there were “spend your points” events, probably to entice people into redeeming their points prior to the merge. I was able to redeem my 50,000 points for $105 CAD (an extra $20). Here are the high-end goodies I got for my points. Continue reading
I really love Besame Cosmetics – the packaging, the whole vibe and philosophy behind all of their retro vintage-inspired beauty products. I’m also a huge fan of everything Snow White, as evidenced by my 2016 Halloween costume:
As soon as I saw the limited edition Besame Cosmetics Snow White Collection in my Instagram feed I just about nearly freaked out. The only problem? I live in Canada. I did order from Besame once before in 2013, and the brokerage and customs fees through UPS were $55.00 on top of the exchange rate from USD for the order. Although I loved the products (you can check out my post), particularly the Classic Color Lipsticks, I was reluctant to order from them again. Luckily, my Dad was wintering in Florida. So I had my order delivered to his address and then he mailed it to me through Canada Post. Hooray! Continue reading
Hi everyone! Today’s post is a quick review of a new lipstick I picked up the last time I was at Sephora. I have heard really great things about the Laura Mercier lippies but have never tried one. I recently got one of the Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Colourbalms. Don’t you just love the name “Lip Parfait”? Continue reading
Over Christmas I visited my sister, and we made a little trip to the MAC store in Halifax. I love going to MAC in person because there is no MAC store where I live. We had an awesome SA who showed us some of the new MAC Lip Duos and helped us try some on. I think the duos are a neat idea. You get a lip pencil and lipstick combo for less than what it would cost to buy them each separately. My sister bought Chicory/Brick-o-la and, can you believe it, it was her first ever MAC purchase!? I decided on Cherry/Cockney. However, I noticed that I had some of the lip pencils and lipsticks from the other duos, so I’m going to do some swatches from three of the other MAC Lip Duos for you in this post as well. Continue reading
Hi everyone! I’m back with a review of some more of the Burt’s Bees lip products. I’m a big fan of this brand and I love their lip balms. Lip balm is one of the most essential items in my life! I did a previous review of some of the Burt’s Bees lip balms as well as their lipstick in Orchid Ocean. I really wanted to try out another shade of the Burt’s Bees lipstick, and while I was swatching, I also picked up two additional Burt’s Bees lip products I hadn’t tried before; the Tinted Lip Balm and the Tinted Lip Oil. Continue reading
As soon as I saw this new lip product from Benefit, I knew I had to try it. Benefit is one of the cutest, retro-inspired brands and they have the greatest packaging and iconic product names. Some of their products can be a bit gimmicky but they are never boring! Their Benefit They’re Real! Double the Lip Beyond Sexy Lipstick & Liner in One was just too interesting to pass up. Benefit bills it as “This lip liner & lipstick in one features a Custom Teardrop Tip that grabs and defines your lip line and fills in lips with complementing colour for the appearance of volume and dimension.” I had never seen a built in, separate lip liner colour in a lipstick before. Visually, these Double the Lip two-tone lipsticks were irresistible. Continue reading
I love when MAC comes out with a new LE collection. I always check it out, although I don’t necessarily always order anything. There was just something about the Work it Out collection that was calling my name. I think, primarily, it was all of the lustre finish lipsticks (my fav!), but then there were just so many other cool new things I wanted to try. I also absolutely love this packaging that is a little bit 80s but also a little bit retro 1950s/1960s too. Black and white stars and checkerboards combined with bright, neon pinks, oranges, blues and greens!? Swoon. Continue reading
1. What was your first MAC lipstick?
Dubonnet. I remember searching fruitlessly for a red that suited me and didn’t immediately turn hot pink after I applied it. I went into a MAC for the first time and had them pick one for me and totally loved it!
Hi everyone! I know I have a lot of MAC lipsticks, but I couldn’t resist adding one more to my collection when MAC had a sale in December. I was really interested in trying New York Apple, described as a “muted red with pink shimmer.” Although my favourite finish in MAC lipsticks is lustre, New York Apple is a frost. I only have one other MAC frost lipstick, Angel, which I love. I was really pleased when New York Apple arrived. It is the sweetest shade and I can’t help thinking it would be perfect to wear for Valentine’s Day, which is coming up soon. Continue reading
Hello everyone! I thought I’d share my favourite MAC lipsticks with you today. My favourite finish of all the MAC lipsticks is the lustre, and I have amassed quite a few of them. I find that the lustre lipsticks just don’t get enough love, so I wanted to do a post featuring all of the shades I have, along with some swatches, and let you know what my favourites are. I’ve only included lustres I have from the permanent collection, nothing LE.
Lustre is one of MAC’s 10 (I think?) different lipstick finishes. The lustres are described by MAC as “Demi-sheer with wet-look lustre finish. Very slick. Makes lips look soft, smooth, ultra-moist.” My lips tend to be dry and I find the lustres very moisturizing and light and comfortable to wear, almost like a lip balm. I like that they have some shine and I suppose because I am more fair skinned, I also like that they aren’t super pigmented because that makes them easier to work with. Many of these I can swipe on without a mirror. Continue reading
Hey everyone! I just wanted to do a quick post about the free items I got with my latest Sephora order, especially because one of the Beauty Deals is pretty great and is still available on the website. When I placed my order, I ended up qualifying for VIB Rouge again [hangs head in shame and cuts up credit card]. I was happy to see that the VIB Rouge Welcome Gift was actually available this time. I never did get the VIB Rouge gift last year (which I think was a mini Marc Jacobs Beauty Lipstick) even after contacting Sephora, who continually said they were “out of stock”, which I think was pretty bad customer service considering how much one has spent when one hits the Rouge level. The only VIB Rouge gift I’d received was for 2014, the first time I qualified, and that was the mini Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick. So I was really pleased with the 2016 VIB Rouge Welcome Gift, a super cute mini NARS blush.
Hey everyone! I just got back from a trip to Estonia and while I was there I made time to do a little bit of makeup shopping (of course!). It was really neat to be in Eastern Europe and see all sorts of different brands I ‘d never heard of and that aren’t available in Canada. Once I got back, I did some internet research to learn more about the brands and I’m pretty happy with my new discoveries.
The first brand I discovered was the Swedish brand, Make Up Store. I happened upon one of their shops while I was in Helsinki for the day. Continue reading
Hi everyone! In May, the fiance had a folklore conference at Université Laval in Quebec City so I decided to tag along. The amount of traveling I have been doing lately has gotten me seriously behind on my blogging. Quebec is our french-speaking province, and Quebec City (the capital with a population of about 500,000) dates back to the 1600s. Its so beautiful and it feels like you’re in Europe. I thought you might like to see a few pics from my trip before I delve into the goodies I picked up while I was there. Continue reading
Its taken me so long to get around to blogging about all of the different things I got in the Sephora spring sale, but I really wanted to thoroughly test out the Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick before I reviewed it. I’m very particular about lipsticks and after my High-end Lipstick Review Series, I like to give a new lipstick a real good try before I write about it. Smashbox recently revamped their Be Legendary lipsticks and added some new shades (in total there are 18 shades in the cream finish, and 18 in the matte finish). I’d quite liked the Smashbox Be Legendary Long Wear Lip Lacquer that I’d tried, so I was really curious to try the newly re-formulated cream lipstick out. Continue reading
Hi everyone! Just a little ode to one of my newest favourite MAC lipsticks. I ordered Fresh Brew online, mostly because it was a brown-toned lustre lipstick (my absolute favourite finish) and who isn’t totally obsessed with the 1990s brown lip at the moment, am I right? Described as “creamed coffee”, Fresh Brew is a true brown on fair skin (not too warm and not too cool) with a beautiful, semi-sheer, slightly glossy finish. I think on darker skin tones this would be a beautiful nude lipstick. Continue reading
I have never been a big matte lip product girl, but MAC’s Whirl lip pencil is one of my favs. Its the perfect warm, pinky-brown nude that you can fill your lips in with or use with all kinds of different lipstick shades. When I heard that MAC was coming out with a lipstick version of Whirl lip pencil, I was intrigued…until I learned that it would be a matte finish lipstick. Would my love for Whirl be enough to overcome my general dislike of matte lipsticks? Continue reading
Hi everyone, I’m back! February has not been a good month and I have not been blogging. My fiance’s daughter, who was traveling abroad, was involved in a serious accident (she is now ok) and he had to rush to be with her. As you can imagine it was a stressful time for us and our families. It really made beauty blogging take a backseat. To make blogging matters worse, my trusty old hot pink Dell laptop that I’ve had since 2008 gave up and I had to get a new laptop. I am finally back up and ready to blog again! I have many, many things to review and share with you so my goal is to get back on a regular schedule. Continue reading
When I was visiting my sister in Halifax recently, she had gotten a new lipstick, the Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lipstick in the shade Sweet Maple, a very 1990s-brown shade, and she loved it. I had never tried any of the Too Faced lippies before, and it looked so pretty! I wanted one of my own. I swatched some of the shades in Sephora, and picked the shade Pink Chocolate, a “berry brown.” I was a little disappointed that they didn’t carry the full shade selection in-store, at least at the location I went to. They only had 12 of the 24 shades available on the Sephora website. Continue reading
I’m back with the 17th and final review in my High-end Lipstick Review series! I have been testing out and comparing high-end lipsticks for just over a year now. You can check out my original post for a full explanation. As promised, I will be giving away a lipstick from the brand that scores the highest number of “Duchess Points” to a subscriber in a shade of their choice. Keep reading to see which brand will be deemed most splurge-worthy and for details about how to enter the giveaway. Continue reading
When I read that Chanel was coming out with a holiday collection inspired by their iconic 1990s shade Vamp, I was so excited! According to Chanel “In 1994, a uniquely striking Le Vernis shade was revealed on the Chanel Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear runway, and a legend was born. This year, a gleaming Holiday colour collection celebrates the rebellious black-red, ‘Vamp’ — the shade that became an icon.” I have ranted about my coming-of-age in the 1990s love of Vamp nail polish previously. I knew I needed the lipstick and nail polish in the Vamp-inspired shade Rouge Noir.
While I was in Ottawa for work just before Christmas, I went to the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique in the Rideau Centre and I was so happy that they had both the lipstick and the nail polish in stock. Both are LE. Continue reading
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before that I collect mirror compacts. I think its a bit of an odd thing to collect I suppose. I kind of feel like an evil queen – so vain and evil that I collect mirrors! I especially love the Sephora LE compacts but they often sell out almost instantly. I have been on the “email me when in stock” list for the Jem and the Holograms Truly Outrageous Compact Mirror for weeks now. When I finally received an email, I immediately went online and ordered one (its already showing as “out of stock” again online). Continue reading
A little while ago, I attended a fundraiser for my local women’s centre and I won a gift basket that contained, among other things, a $25 gift card for The Body Shop. As you guys probably know, I have super sensitive skin and cannot use scented products, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to try out some more of The Body Shop’s makeup line. I have only ever tried their Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder, which works great on fair skin, and their Honey Bronze Shimmer Lip Balm. I recently popped in and they were having a buy one get one free sale. The SA was very helpful and assisted me with sanitizing and trying on several things, and I decided on a few of their lip and cheek products.
I am a blush-addict, so of course I had to try one of their All in One Blushers: “This extra-fine powder blusher gives smooth, buildable colour and has great staying power. With ingredients including vitamin E and marula oil, it’s make-up and skincare in one.” I picked the shade #01 Macaroon, a pale peachy shade with a satin finish – not entirely matte, but with a hint of sheen.
