Retro Tiki Decorating Ideas for Summer

tiki hut decorating ideas

My backyard “tiki hut”

Hi everyone! Hope you’ve been enjoying your summer. I haven’t been blogging in a while (2 months! gulp). I’ve been busy moving into and renovating our new house, trying to sell my old house, and *enjoying* having two mortgages, which has seriously cut into my makeup shopping. I literally haven’t purchased anything beauty-related in months – I’ve been on an unplanned beauty no-buy. Sephora called to ask if I was ok 🙂 We also ran into a major, unexpected issue with the house I’m selling, which has been a source of stress, so blogging has been on the back burner for a while.

So this weekend, I really wanted to do a blog post, and I thought it might be fun to do a non-beauty related post. I have been settling into and decorating our new place, and wanted to show you some of the neat things I’ve picked up that I’ve been really enjoying. Our house came with a small out-building in the backyard that the previous owners referred to as the “love shack”, lol, that has great windows, electricity and even a little wood stove for chilly nights. Its perfect for entertaining in. It already had a bit of a retro, tiki bar vibe with the natural wood, the bamboo blinds, and white ceiling fans. There was no way I could resist adding some full-on tiki bar accessories. If you share my obsession with all things tiki, or are just looking to add a bit of a tropical, retro vibe to your summer, I hope you find some of my buys and DIY decorating tips handy!

From the outside

I started with a bright and colourful hibiscus flower border all along the ceiling. I bought a large pack of Hawaiian flower leis online (although you could probably find them at a dollar store or party store) and strung them together and added a staple here and there to keep them up. It was super simple. I also found these totally perfect faux glass fishing float string lights on Amazon. There were so many cute string lights that could work for a tiki theme, from these beautiful Scarlet Pink Flamingos, this flamingos and palm trees set, to this bamboo set.

There was already a built-in wooden bench along the windows. I found four of these palm leaf patio cushions at the Canadian store, Rossy, for $9.99 each, as well as a matching table cloth for $14.99. Seriously, if you haven’t checked out Rossy, you are missing out. I love the retro blue and green shades, and anything with palm leaves gives an instant tiki-vibe.

Winners proved to be another great place for tiki-themed items. I found these really cool tiki glasses with a matching pitcher that came in several different colours – of course I picked pink – and this set of four plastic cups with tropical flowers and watermelons. I am not sure if these were meant to be small bowls or drinking cups, but in any case, I am using them as tealight holders for after the sun goes down.

My two favourite things I found online though were definitely the tropical pineapple and coconut drinking cups. The plastic coconut cups were only $3.99 each! The plastic pineapple cups were $25.99 for six. They all came with little fabric flowers attached and with bendy straws. I almost cannot take how cute these are. I have really enjoyed sipping pina coladas out of these on warm summer evenings. Every tiki bar needs at least a few cheesy tropical-themed glasses right?

tiki paper pineapple

I love pineapples and also couldn’t resist this adorable tissue paper pineapple that Amazon suggested as an “add-on item” (thanks for the enabling Amazon) for $2.99. However, this one doesn’t seem to be available anymore. The next least expensive one I could find is this 2-pack for $13.98. Not sure you need a paper pineapple that bad.

I thought that some shells might give my tiki hut a beachy theme. I picked up some very inexpensive shadow box frames from the dollar store and with my trusty hot glue gun, added some silver dollars I had collected from various beaches. You could put any type of “beachy” items in there that you like.

Finally, what tiki hut could be complete without a ukulele? I liked this 21 Inch Soprano Ukulele from Amazon because it came in so many fun colours. I loved this vintagey pale turquoise-blue! And I have actually learned how to play several songs on it, which has been so much fun.

As you can probably tell, with such a fun place to hang out its been very hard to tear myself away to blog, lol. I hope you’ve found some of my tiki-inspired decorating ideas fun. I would love to hear about how you’ve been spending your summer. Please feel free to post a pic of where you love hanging out in the summertime.

Thanks for reading!

Congrats on your new place! What a fun way to dress up your “love shack”! 😆
Haha, I’ve had makeup counters call me up to ask when I’ll be around next when I am on my No-Buys… 😳
