Benefit They’re Real! Double the Lip: Does it Really Work?

Benefit They're Real! Double the Lip
As soon as I saw this new lip product from Benefit, I knew I had to try it. Benefit is one of the cutest, retro-inspired brands and they have the greatest packaging and iconic product names. Some of their products can be a bit gimmicky but they are never boring! Their Benefit They’re Real! Double the Lip Beyond Sexy Lipstick & Liner in One was just too interesting to pass up. Benefit bills it as “This lip liner & lipstick in one features a Custom Teardrop Tip that grabs and defines your lip line and fills in lips with complementing colour for the appearance of volume and dimension.” I had never seen a built in, separate lip liner colour in a lipstick before. Visually, these Double the Lip two-tone lipsticks were irresistible.
There were eight adorable shades to choose from. Benefit has gone with the same packaging and design as their other  products in their They’re Real! collection, like the  They’re Real! Mascara and the Push-up Liner. At first I wasn’t too sure about the teardrop shape of the lipstick itself, but it actually is really easy to apply and it applies very precisely.

Nude Scandal

I was traveling for work and was able to visit a Sephora IRL and actually swatch some of the shades. I picked Nude Scandal, which is a pinky nude paired with a warm brown “lip liner” shade. I was surprised by how distinct the liner shade is once applied. I thought the two shades would probably just blur together, but you do get a very subtle lip liner/ombre effect from the lipstick as I think you can tell from my swatch pic.

The finish is supposed to be Satin or “semi-matte”, so I was surprised at how much glossiness this lipstick has when first applied. Blotting will get you closer to a semi-matte finish and I also found that it looked more matte after I had it on for an hour or so. It claims to have 8 hour wear (I couldn’t wear it for that long for reasons you’ll hear about below). I did find it pretty long-wearing, but at the same time it was very comfortable and didn’t dry out my lips. Sounds perfect right? Well…

Unfortunately the downside of the Benefit They’re Real! Double the Lip is that it smells and tastes terrible! I did do my “sniff test” at the Sephora, but didn’t notice much of a scent from the tester. But when I got home and opened mine up and first began to apply it, I realized there is a definite perfumey scent going on. It wasn’t too strong, so I initially thought it might not be that bad, but hours later I could still smell it and even worst, I could taste it! It tastes perfumey or soapy or something. Yuck! About half-way through the day I couldn’t take it any more and removed it. The scent/taste reminded me of a cheap, drugstore lipstick, but at $26.00 CAD, they are definitely not cheap.

Its so weird because one of my favourite lip products of all time is the Benefit Benebalm, hydrating tinted lip balm in Rose. The Benebalm does have a subtle (and classier) rose scent but didn’t have any sort of weird taste.

If you are someone who isn’t bothered much by the scent or taste of lip products, you might not even notice this and you might be a huge fan. If you’re like me and are a bit sensitive to too much fragrance in your lip products, then I wouldn’t recommend this.

  1. Oh man, that’s terrible about not only the smell, but also the taste! Do they not test these products before going to market? I mean, this is a LIP product, geez!
