As many of my readers will know, I am not the hugest fan of matte lip products. My ideal type of lippie is a MAC lipstick in the lustre finish (as evidenced by my ample lustre collection), which is more balmy, shiny and sheer. I received this Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick from a thoughtful friend who shares my love of makeup. I was apprehensive. I had tried on the Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick (the one in the squeeze tube) at Sephora. After wearing it as I shopped along my merry way for 10 or 15 minutes, my lips felt like they’d had all of the moisture sucked right out of them! I removed it before I even made it to the checkout line and applied copious amounts of my fav Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment. Would the newer Melted Matte be better or even worse?
As opposed to the original Melted, which was described as having the “lasting power of a stain, and pigment-packed color of a liquid lipstick”, the new Melted Matte’s “innovative formula glides onto lips like a gloss but dries to an ultra-matte, opaque finish. Melted Matte ensures that your lip color always looks rich, full, and kissable—and is never dry, shriveled, or cracked…It’s infused with Volulip for a no-sting plumping and smoothing effect and antioxidant-rich avocado oil and vitamin E to moisturize, while hyaluronic filling spheres smooth the look of lip lines.”
Instead of a squeezable tube, the Melted Matte has a doe-foot applicator. Its not just the packaging that’s different; the Melted Matte seems to have a different formula too.
I must admit, what persuaded me to try this matte more than anything was this kick-ass shade, Drop Dead Red. A deep, rich, brown-based burgundy-red, this is the ultimate retro vampy shade! I love this colour.
The formula definitely has that liquified lipstick type of feel to it, similar to the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks. Some reviews have mentioned an unpleasant or chemical scent, but I found it to be totally unscented. Its very smooth and easy to apply. It doesn’t “set” but acts more like a lipstick, so keep that in mind with the dark shades; it did transfer and can smear easily if you’re not careful. Its also has crazy staining power! I’m not sure if they all would leave behind such a dramatic stain, or if its just because this shade is particularly dark. This new formula didn’t feel as drying as the Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in the squeeze tube I tried, but it is definitely more drying than I generally prefer in a lip product. It probably wouldn’t be something I would wear regularly, but for a dramatic lip look for an occasional night out, I could deal with this matte lipstick mostly because I just really love the shade. Personally, I much preferred the Smashbox Liquid Lipsticks.
The Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick comes in 18 different shades, and retails for $25.00 CAD.
What are your thoughts on matte lippies? Do you love them or do you find them just too drying and uncomfortable to wear? Do you have a favourite matte?
