Hi everyone! Today I have a pretty extensive review of the new Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks in nine of the shades (this is a long one, so get comfy and fix yourself a drink or a snack!) plus a pretty exciting giveaway! Keep reading to find out how you can win Bawse, a collab with hilarious YouTuber Lilly Singh (iisuperwomanii). I am giving one away to a subscriber and its open internationally.
When I received this package from Smashbox, I have to admit that initially I was a bit scared, because, as anyone familiar with my blog knows, I’m not normally the biggest fan of matte lippies. I tend to find them too drying for me. But Smashbox was so generous and the colours were so cool, that I decided to just dive in and wear a different shade every day and then review them for you and let you know what I think. I ‘m also trying to include more pics of me wearing the products I’m reviewing so you will be treated to an abundance of selfies in this post (Selfies are not easy. I have a whole newfound respect for the Kardashians! lol). Smashbox sent me 10 shades, but I didn’t open or swatch Bawse as I really wanted to be able to share with my subscribers and let someone else try out this new product too.
Packaging: The first thing I really liked about the Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks was the packaging. The clear, rectangular bottle that shows off the vibrant jewel-like colours inside with the elongated black cap reminded me of fancy bottles of nail polish or artists paints. The packaging is very solid and feels sleek and high-end. The applicator is one of those popular new doe foot wands shaped like a doughnut that has a little well in the middle which works really well with liquid lip products. But what would this matte liquid lipstick formula be like?
Formula: After wearing 9 of these (I wore each one all day long) I have to say, I am pretty shocked and amazed that I actually quite liked them. I was totally surprised that they didn’t feel drying on my lips. I genuinely thought I’d only be able to have them on for a few hours or just long enough to photograph, but I was able to wear them all day. When you first apply them, they feel light, thin and almost oily like a lip oil. They don’t ever truly “dry down” the way some long-wearing lip products do, although they do appear matte. “Always On” is an excellent name for these liquid lipsticks. They literally stayed on (even through eating lunch and supper) until I removed them at the end of the day with my Skinny coconut oil, but at the same time they do transfer and – I found out the hard way – aren’t kiss proof. Its a very peculiar formula combination that allows the product to be very long-wearing, but also not drying. They also didn’t really stain my lips which I found surprising. The thing I also enjoyed about the formula is that its completely unscented.
The verdict? I think if you love a matte lip and you like long-wearing lip products you would really like these. The colours are almost all very intense and very opaque. There isn’t really any way to apply them “sheerly” and build them up; they go on full-on right from the first swipe, so if you prefer subtle, sheer formulas these might not be your cup of tea. I think a lot of people will really like some of the bright and unique shades though! So lets get to the shades…
Some Nerve is a cool, bright lavender. I was surprised at how much I liked this one! I think it works really well on fair skin. Even the fiance commented on it and said he liked it. I don’t normally wear this type of shade, but Some Nerve might have converted me.
Dream Huge is a pale, warm pink with the faintest hint of brown undertones. This one was the most natural and wearable of the shades I received and is one of those my-lips-but-better, nude type of shades. Very pretty! This was one of my favs. Excuse the hair in this pic – it was soo humid and muggy that day I had just given up fighting the frizz 🙂
This beautiful blood red shade with a hint of burgundy, the snappily named Miss Conduct, was the first shade to disappoint. I really loved the blue-based, deep cherry red, and was excited to try this vampy shade, but the formula of Miss Conduct wasn’t like the others. I found this shade very difficult to apply evenly and eventually had to apply it with a lip brush. The formula just seemed uneven and streaky, which is a shame. This one was just too fussy and high-maintenance for me!
Driver’s Seat is described as a “warm pink”, but I think its more of a pinky-brown. On my skintone it tended to show up as more of an orangey-red brown. I was also surprised at how much I liked this one on me. I don’t tend to go for this type of shade, but I think Driver’s Seat looked very natural and had a wearable but retro-red vibe to it.
If you love bright pinks, then Shockoholic is right up your alley! Its the quintessential bright, cool barbie pink. I personally found against my pale skin that this type of shade is a bit over the top for everyday, but maybe fun for going out.
Stepping Out is described as a “deep nude” (and is currently sold out on the Sephora site) but keep in mind by deep nude they really mean deep brown. This shade is a full-on, 1990s warm brown (think MAC Spice). The dream of the 90s is alive with Stepping Out and my inner 1990s teen absolutely loved this shade! I actually think this type of shade suits me so I am pumped that its back in vogue.
Baja Bound is a slightly warm pinky-coral. This shade is not my preference; I always think corals look so much better on darker skintones and aren’t as flattering on pale skin.
Out Loud was another shade that I was surprised to discover I really liked. An orangey-brown, I think this shade is another 1990s-esque brown and was also similar to Driver’s Seat on me. It was much less orange on me than I thought it would be and I quite liked it.
The final shade I tried out, Chill Zone, is a very cool and original shade I think. This shade isn’t “greige” or grey-undertoned, it is literally grey. I could not pull this shade off at all. When I emerged at work wearing it, all of the girls I work with responded with a resounding and immediate “Nope!” That being said, I think if you had a more dramatic makeup and clothing look going on, like you are more of a goth or a punk type of gal, I am sure this could totally rock. If you are looking for something different and avant garde, give Chill Zone a try.

I love sharing my thoughts with you and always hope it helps you make decisions on what you spend your hard earned money on. I feel very grateful that they have been so generous to me.
