Hi everyone! I recently received several Mascaras from Smashbox, and I’m so excited to try them all out and review them for you. I think mascaras are one of my favorite products to try out, how about you? I love the sample sized mascaras from Sephora. I have one particular absolute favourite mascara that I just keep repurchasing and repurchasing, Guerlain Maxi Lash, which made my 2014 and 2015 favourites, but I’m always game for putting a new mascara up against it to see if it competes! I’m going to test out and review each of these separately. I find you need to use a mascara for at least a week before you can really get a good feel for it.
Before I start, I think its important for you to know what I really like in a mascara. That way, you’ll know that if you like similar qualities and I really like a mascara, chances are you’ll like it too. On the flip side, if what I tend to prefer in a mascara is not your cup of tea, then my review can still be helpful because you’ll be able to judge whether or not its what you’re looking for (if I hate it, you might love it). Let’s get started…I have quite long eyelashes, but they are sparse – I don’t seem to have a lot of them. They are also kind of light on the ends, especially compared to my hair. I need a volumizing mascara that thickens my lashes. I generally like:
- a thicker, dryer formula. I even like a little bit of a clumpy mascara.
- I don’t like “wet” runny mascaras. They tend to make my lashes stick together and I end up looking like I have 4 eyelashes 😛
- I prefer a more traditional bristley wand VS the new plastic ones.
- I HATE crunchy eyelashes; that’s a total dealbreaker. I like my lashes to still feel soft and natural.
- I can’t deal with flaking and smudging. I need something that stays on.
- I prefer smaller, thin brushes. Huge oversized mascara wands might look cool, but are just too messy and I end up getting product all over my eyelids.
- I like really dramatically BLACK mascaras. One might think, aren’t all mascaras “black”? but they really aren’t.
The Guerlain Maxi Lash fulfills all my criteria. The first Smashbox mascara I decided to test out was the X-Rated. Partially because I loved the tube, which looks like its been twisted and sort of forms an “X” shape. Really cool idea!
The volumizing claims of Smashbox X-Rated, described as “a mascara with audacious volume that lets lashes go from dramatic and defined, to exaggerated, layered volume” also called my name, promising “ultra-thick, voluptuous lashes.” I also really liked the look of the narrow, natural bristle brush.
“was designed with three deep channels to hold the perfect amount of formula for mega-coating lashes, and the three rows of bristles isolate and extend lashes while the Tripod fibers wrap around each lash for amp-up volume. Just maximize all three sides by rolling the brush up and out as you work from base to tip of lashes, taking lashes from subtle to obscenely volumized.”
I’m including this description because this is actually a pretty accurate depiction of what it does. This mascara brush is awesome! It really gets in there and coats each individual lash with a ton of mascara. It definitely did what it promised, delivering crazy dramatic volumized lashes. I love the formula, which is on the thicker, dryer side. It is also super black! Its the only mascara I’ve tried that is as black as the Guerlain Maxi Lash. I’ve been wearing it for over a week now and it really stays put – zero flaking or smudging. I even had a nap with this mascara on and it totally didn’t budge. And the final test: my lashes still feel soft while its on, not stiff and crunchy. It doesn’t even feel like I’m wearing mascara. Hooray!
Here is my attempt at a before and after shot. I’m trying to get better at these 🙂 The Smashbox X-Rated is applied to my lashes on the right. I can definitely assure you there is no photo shop or anything going on here – its just taken with my iPhone6 #lowtech
As you can tell by the title of this post, the Smashbox X-Rated is my new favourite mascara. I think the others may have a hard time living up to X-Rated…but I will be trying them out and letting you know over the next couple of weeks. The Smashbox X-Rated Mascara is $25 CAD. Have you tried it? Also I’d love to hear what your favourite mascaras are!
