High-end Lipstick Review Series: Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in PetalI’m back with the 15th lipstick in my High-end Lipstick Review Series! Can you believe its been that many? I’m in the home stretch now, and only have one or two more brands I’d like to include before declaring a winner. Then one of my subscribers will get a lipstick from the winning brand in a shade of their choice! So stay tuned.

This review is of the Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick. D&G only started a cosmetic line in 2009, so its relatively new. I haven’t tried anything from D&G before, except a pair of sunglasses (which I love). I ordered this lipstick online from Sephora in the shade Petal, a “neutral lilac rose” which I think is a fairly good description.

The D&G lipsticks are $32 CAD. Let’s see how it did!

Packaging
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

This didn’t really strike me as high-end packaging. The tube was plain and fairly lightweight plastic (although it did snap shut securely). I’m not a huge fan of all gold either. It really reminded me of a drugstore lipstick, like the L’Oreal Color Riche or the Milani Color Statement lipsticks. 1/3 Duchess points

Formula
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

I thought the formula of this lipstick was ok. It didn’t wow me. It was a fairly traditional “lipstick” type of formula – a little thick, very opaque – and it had a bit of a matte finish. Although it felt creamy, it really accentuated any dryness on my lips. Not my favourite. 1/3 Duchess points

Wear
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

I can’t fault this lipstick on wear. The traditional formula was long-wearing, but I found it a little drying on the lips. 2/3 Duchess points

Scent/Taste
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

As soon as I opened this lipstick, I was immediately struck by the scent. It smells EXACTLY like the L’Oreal Color Riche lipsticks. I’d tried the Color Riche in Fairest Nude, a beautiful shade, but I just could not get past the scent and passed it on to my sister. Its a weird, artificial scent combined with a “your grandmother’s old lipstick” type of scent. Bleck!

I also became very suspicious that overall, this lipstick is so similar to the much less expensive L’Oreal Color Riche.

L'Oreal Color Riche a dupe for the Dolce & Gabbana lipstick

Is the L’Oreal Color Riche a dupe for the D&G lipstick?

Even the pointed shape of the lipstick itself with the logo engraved just below the tip is eerily similar. After some internet research, it doesn’t seem like the two companies are affiliated. I can’t believe that these two lipsticks aren’t made in the exact same factory though.

But, back to the scent: 1/3 Duchess points

Sensitivity Test
Despite the terrible scent and slightly drying qualities of this lipstick, I don’t believe it irritated my lips.

MAC Test
negative 1 duchess point

I liked this lipstick WAY less than a MAC lipstick. -1 Duchess point

Would I pay $32 CAD for another Dolce & Gabbana lipstick?
negative 1 duchess point

Nope! Not a chance. I think you can get the exact same lipstick (awful scent and all) at the drugstore for a quarter of the price.

Dolce & Gabbana Total Score: 3/14

Drugstore Swap with ChromaMeSilly!

US drugstore makeup swap

Fabulous drugstore goodies from Miami. Thanks Thalia!

I recently did a swap with the lovely Thalia from ChromaMeSilly who lives in the U.S. Our theme was favourite lip and cheek products from the drugstore. I sent her some Canadian brands, like Annabelle, Quo and Marcelle, and she sent me brands that are hard to get where I live. She sent me such a nice package! I thought I’d share some of the neat things I received.

I was excited about the Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and the Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss. Hard Candy is apparently available in Canada at WalMart, but my local WalMart doesn’t stock much make-up so I’ve never tried anything from them. I absolutely love the packaging! How cute is this for a drugstore brand?

Hard Candy Contouring Face trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

Hard Candy Contouring Face Trio and Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

I love the Contouring Face Trio in 839 3rd Wheel. The way I’ve generally been using it is to swirl my blush brush and use all three shades mixed together, but if I just want to pick up some highlight or blush, a pretty peachy-pink, that works too.

I also love the Hard Candy Volumizing Lip Gloss in 916 Magic Mauve. I was nervous at first about the “plumping” part because I can be so sensitive, but I don’t think this lip product has any of those ingredients that intentionally irritates your lips to make them plumper. I just feels a little bit cool. Magic Mauve is a beautiful, nude pink. The formula of this is not like a gloss, but more like a liquid lipstick and the scent reminds me of MAC lipsticks. It isn’t sticky at all and has a very natural-looking finish. It also wears off in the prettiest way of any lip product ever. This is my favourite  item I received and I’d love to have more shades. Great pick Thalia!

The next brand she sent me was e.l.f. I’ve never seen e.l.f. in any Canadian stores (if you know of anywhere to purchase it, please let me know) although there are a few websites that ship it to Canada but I haven’t tried ordering from them before. So many bloggers and YouTubers rave about e.l.f. I was really excited to try these too.

e.l.f.

e.l.f. products!

I received:

  • e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia
  • e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine
  • e.l.f Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit
  • e.l.f Essential Clear Brow & Lash Mascara
e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia

I had heard about the Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in St. Lucia, which I think was being called a dupe for the NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo in Orgasm/Laguna. The packaging sure is similar. I was so impressed with this! The blush is beautiful and stays on all day without fading.

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

e.l.f Matte Lip Color in Wine and Lip Balm Tint in Grapefruit

The Matte Lip Color and the Lip Balm Tint are two more fabulous lip product selections from Miss Thalia. I’m not normally a huge fan of matte lip products, but the e.l.f. is an exception. The Matte Lip Color is more like a lip stain, similar to the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains, only not glossy. It doesn’t dry out my lips at all. I always love a tinted lip balm, and both of these worn together is a beautiful lip combo.

Check out the extreme prettiness of these swatches:

swatch e.l.f. St. Lucia Blush & Bronzer, Wine Matte Lip Color, & Grapefruit Lip Balm Tint

e.l.f. St. Lucia Blush & Bronzer, Wine Matte Lip Color, & Grapefruit Lip Balm Tint

Finally, I also received two more lip balms. Anyone who knows me, knows of my lip balm addiction. I have one in every room, in my car, in my office drawers, everywhere! Neutrogena cosmetics aren’t available in Canada, so I loved that I got their Moisture Shine Lip Soother. I also have a thing about goat’s milk (see my post about my favourite soap) so the Dionis Goat Milk Skincare Lip Balm seemed made for me and also has awesome ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. I’m now on a mission to find out if Dionis products are available in Canada.

I really enjoyed swapping with you Thalia! Loved everything you sent me. I’d recommend checking out Thalia’s blog.

Review of L’oreal La Nude Palettes 1 & 2

Loreal La Nude Palette 1 and 2

Couldn’t choose so I got them both!

After seeing reviews for the L’oreal La Nude palettes, I was bummed that I hadn’t seen them yet in any of my local drugstores. While I was in Toronto I happened to pop into a Shoppers Drug Mart and when I saw the La Nude palettes 1 and 2 I was so excited I grabbed them both. I had high hopes for these after being really impressed with the Maybelline The Nudes palette (see review).

The La Nudes 1 has your typical brown and taupe type of neutral shades that I think has a nice mix of both cool and warm tones, vs some palettes which tend to lean one way or the other. It has 4/10 matte shades.

Loreal La Nude Palette 1

La Nude 1 – brown and taupe neutrals

La Nudes 2 is more of a pink and plum toned palette. It has 6/10 matte shades.

Loreal La Nude Palette 2

La Nude 2 – more pinks and plums

Here are the swatches of the La Nude 1 VS La Nude 2:

swatches Loreal La Nude Palette 1

La Nude 1

swatches Loreal La Nude Palette 2

La Nude 2

Sadly, I can’t do a positive review of these palettes. I found the quality of these shadows just isn’t there for me. Here were my main issues:

Major fall-out: The La Nude 1 had the most fall-out. It was a mess trying to apply them and I would have to do a ton of clean-up under my eyes with a cotton bud. I did think the La Nude 2 had less fall-out.

Dude, where’s my eye shadow? When I tried to blend these shadows, they would nearly disappear and I would have to go back and reapply them to try to build the intensity back up (who has the time?).

Creasing & fading: Most of the shades from the La Nude 1 creased on me – with primer. The La Nude 2 shades didn’t crease, but both palettes would fade on me throughout the day.

Too expensive! In Canada, the La Nude palettes are a whopping $29.99 CAD. By comparison, Maybelline The Nudes palette is only $14.99 CAD and you get 12 neutral shadows (vs only 10 in the L’oreal palettes). I would skip the L’oreal and get the Maybelline or some of the new NYX shadows which are awesome (see review) instead.

I think I could have been less critical of the La Nudes if it wasn’t for the price. I expected better quality from a $30 palette. I have so many other shadows that I like way more. The L’oreal La Nudes were a miss for me.

Anna Sui Lipstick Review

Anna Sui Lip Stick V and Beauty Mirror Rose

Anna Sui Lip Stick V and “Beauty Mirror Rose” compact

I was really excited to try the Anna Sui lipstick. I was already a huge fan of the packaging after picking up the Beauty Mirror Rose compact, which I love.

If you’re not familiar with the brand, Anna Sui is an American fashion designer who began her makeup line in 1999. The Anna Sui cosmetics are all made in Japan. If you’re a sucker for packaging (like I am!) you will love the unique, elaborate, retro-inspired designs of Anna Sui makeup which is a little bit Art Nouveau, a little bit gothic, and a little bit rock n roll.

I got the Anna Sui Lip Stick V (which stands for “vivid”). The packaging reminds me of a perfume bottle! Isn’t it stunning?

Anna Sui Lipstick V 301 Beige Pink

301 Beige Pink

I have never seen such a unique lipstick, especially the star shape. At first I thought it might be difficult to apply, but it really isn’t. Plus, after a few applications, it starts to round out and apply exactly like a traditional bullet shape would.

Anna Sui Lipstick V in 301 Beige Pink

How cool is the shooting star design?

Out of the 10 available shades, I picked 301 Beige Pink, a soft, fleshy pink nude with a glossy finish. Its more cool-toned but has some undertones of peach and brown that make it really wearable and natural looking. I think this shade would suit a lot of different skin tones.

swatch Anna Sui Lipstick V in 301 Beige Pink

Beige Pink

The Lip Stick V has all kinds of ingredients like:

Fix Oil, a resinous oil ingredient that helps to create a cosmetic film leaving pigment clinging to the lips all day long. Melting Moist Oil, a revolutionary oil that melts at body temperature and provides a smooth application with an intense burst of moisture. Light Glossy Oil gives lips a beautiful shine finish, making them appear fuller and plumped. Rosa Canina Fruit Extract to moisturize and keep lips hydrated. Carthamus Tinctorius Flower (Safflower) Flower Extract to promote blood circulation.”

The formula is super luxurious and almost feels like applying a lip balm, yet its not sheer and it stays on incredibly long. The only slight downside for some people might be the scent. Its smells like rose water. Actually the scent reminds me of turkish delight (which is flavoured with rose water). I would also compare it to the scent of Benefit’s Benetint. As you probably know if you follow my blog my preference is for unscented products, but there are a few scents that I really don’t mind and actually kind of like, for example MAC and Chanel lipsticks. The Anna Sui is one of those scented lippies that I actually like! However, I will say the scent is quite strong and might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you aren’t a big rose-scent person I would recommend giving a tester a sniff first.

The Anna Sui Lip Stick V is $29.00 CAD and is available in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques, The Bay (select locations only), Murale, and online through Beautylish. I am in love! I will definitely be trying out some more of the Anna Sui lipsticks in future.

Have you tried Anna Sui? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A Few Recent Things From MAC

MAC Sweet Satisfaction, Desire, and Uninterrupted
This post could easily have been hashtagged Youtube Made Me Do It. I was enticed into purchasing all of these MAC items, two of them by YouTube. The third was by one of those tempting emails MAC keeps sending me that I am evidently helpless to resist. Lets start with my YouTube-inspired purchases.

I saw a Pixiwoo video that featured MAC Uninterrupted Pro Longwear eye shadow. The lovely LisalisaD1 has also talked about Uninterrupted a couple of times now and also recently raved about Sweet Satisfaction, another Pro Longwear. I had never tried the Pro Longwear shadows. Both of these were on my MAC wishlist.

Lisa described Uninterrupted as one of those shades that looks kind of “blah” in the pan, but looks awesome on. I love shades like that. MAC describes it as “dark camel” and its a semi-matte finish. Its quite an interesting shade of brown, that I find really brings out the green in my eyes. It isn’t completely matte but has the tiniest hint of a sheen.

MAC Uninterrupted

MAC Uninterrupted

Sweet Satisfaction is “soft neutral beige” and is a frost finish. Its a beautiful neutral shadow that I think most people would totally love. Don’t be scared by the whole frost thing – it isn’t glittery. It just has a shimmery finish.

MAC Sweet Satisfaction

MAC Sweet Satisfaction

I am super impressed with the Pro Longwear formula. Both shadows are so buttery and easy to apply and blend yet don’t have any fall-down. They are crazy long-wearing (I always wear a primer). MAC shadows are just my favourite. The Pro Longwear compacts are $25.00 CAD.

My third purchase was totally due to an Artist Tips email from MAC promoting their lustre lipsticks, and if you’ve been following me you probably already know MAC lustres are my favourite lipsticks of all time. The email featured Desire lipstick, described as “warmed burgundy wine”, right up my plum lipstick loving alley!

Its in the same family as some of my other lustre favs like Capricious and Plumful. Its darker, and a more vampy burgundy plum compared to either of those. I love it!

Do you have any recent YouTube Made Me Do It purchases?

High-end Lipstick Review Series: YSL

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine

I think this was one of the high-end lipsticks I was the most excited to try. YSL lippies get raved about. I got to check them out in person at Sephora and the formula I liked best was the Rouge Volupte Shine.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

After much swatching, I chose shade #7, Rose Infinite , described on the Sephora site as a “shady pink taupe.” I don’t think this is really taupe. Its more of a plum tone. Its a very pretty, wearable plum for fair skin.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine No. 7 Rose Infinite

The YSL lipsticks are $39 CAD. Lets’ see how it did compared to the other lipsticks I’ve reviewed in this series.

Packaging
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

How can you not love the YSL packaging? Gorgeous. The 3-D wrap-around YSL logo is really unique. I really like how each shade is easily identified by a corresponding strip of colour around the outside of the tube. The packaging is totally high-end. 3/3 Duchess points

Formula
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

The Rouge Volupte Shine is exactly the type of formula I love too. It feels like applying lip balm. Its so luxurious and hydrating and feels amazing. Its a little sheer, yet pigmented, and has a beautiful shine. 3/3 Duchess points

Wear
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

For a sheer, balmy lipstick, this is crazy long-wearing! It leaves a deep stain behind as it wears off.  3/3 Duchess points

Scent/Taste
duchess pointduchess pointduchess point

This is where YSL lost points for me. It has a strong, fake watermelon scent that reminds me of the scent of the Milani lipsticks. I’m not a fan. The scent fades quickly enough, but there is a slight taste. I would have preferred if this was unscented. 1/3 Duchess points

Sensitivity
Despite the added fragrance, it hasn’t irritated my lips at all, so no Duchess points deducted.

MAC Test
I would say, fragrance aside, I like the YSL as much as MAC. Neutral Duchess points

Would I pay $39 CAD for another one?
Yes. My only dislike with this lipstick is the scent, which I think some people really like (its a preference thing). I think the formula and packaging make it worth the splurge.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Total: 11/14

The Lipstick Tag!

lipstick-tag
I saw this tag on Stashmatters blog, and in addition to tagging the required 3 people, she also said if you haven’t been tagged and wanted to do this tag, to post a comment and she’d officially tag you! I loved the questions and wanted to do it.

The questions:

1. How many lipsticks do you own? Ok, this was scary. I’d never actually counted them before. Shamefully, I own 86 lipsticks (not including glosses, jumbo lip pencils or crayons, etc.).

2. What was your first ever lipstick? In highschool, no one wore lipstick. We were all about filling in our lips with brown-hued lip liner. Hey it was the 90s! So I actually remember purchasing my first actual lipstick when I was in university. It was a Clinique lipstick. I remember I loved the fluted silver tube!

clinique lipstick

My first lipstick was a Clinique lipstick in a bronzey-brownish type of shade

3. What is your most worn lipstick? Currently, MAC Capricious. I’m on my second tube.

MAC Capricious Lipstick

4. What is your favorite brand for lipsticks? MAC!

5. What is your favorite finish? MAC lustre. Best finish ever.

6. What is the last lipstick you bought? Anna Sui Lipstick V in Beige Pink. I will be doing a full review soon!

7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag? This is always a ridiculously high number! Right now, 13. Make no wonder my purse weighs a ton.

8. What lipstick do you use to rock a red lip? MAC Dubonnet.

MAC Dubonnet Lipstick

Best red lipstick for cool-toned fair skin!

9. How do you store your lipsticks? I have clear plastic containers that I picked up at a home-decor store, some that have actual dividers specifically for lipsticks. But they are overflowing!

10. What lip products are you currently lusting over? Cle de Peau because I cannot get it in Canada (you always want what you can’t have), Chantecaille Lip Chic and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. in Bitch Perfect.

Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour

Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour

Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour

I was so excited to try the Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour, because I loved the Rimmel Apocalips and the Stay Glossy lipgloss. I am generally a fan of the Rimmel lip products. I was also totally in love with the beautiful deep plum shade, Kiss Fatal.

Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour in 230 Kiss Fatal

230 Kiss Fatal

The Provocalips is one of those two-step, long-wearing lip products. The Rimmel site explains:
STEP 1: Apply colour and keep lips apart for 60 seconds until the product sets.
STEP 2: Apply topcoat to lock the colour, moisture and add shine.”

Rimmel London Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour 230 Kiss Fatal swatch

Kiss Fatal swatched with topcoat

Unfortunately, the Provocalips did not work out for me at all. I found the step 1 colour difficult to apply evenly. Although I let it set for a minute the first time, and then even longer the next few times I tried it (several minutes), when I applied the step 2 topcoat it would wipe away some of the colour.

The topcoat was really different than other 2-step products I’ve tried before like the Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor or the MUFE Aqua Rouge. Instead of being clear its thick and more opaque like a lip balm – a pretty odd formula. It did a good job of keeping my lips moisturized though.

As opposed to providing 16 hours of wear, I didn’t find it long-wearing at all, and even worse, within an hour  it looked very patchy and uneven. Provocalips was definitely a miss for me.

Have you tried it? I’m curious if other folks had a similar experience.

Mac is Beauty: Lips

MAC is BeautyI am a huge fan of MAC Lustre lipsticks and I’m often bummed when their limited edition collections come out because the lipsticks are typically in the other finishes, lately matte finishes especially. When I saw the spring Mac is Beauty collection I was really excited because it included 8 Lustre lipsticks!

I was just in Toronto for work and visited the MAC store in the Eaton’s Centre and got to swatch them all. My favourite was Real Redhead. It is the perfect nude for fair skin!

MAC is Beauty Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

Real Redhead is described as “mauve nude”,  an odd description. I would describe it more as a fleshy-peachy nude.  I’ve been looking for a shade like this that works on cool-toned, fair skin for ages. Usually this type of shade washes me out. But Real Redhead has some brownish, beigey undertones that make it work.

MAC is Beauty Real Redhead Lustre Lipstick

I think its the prettiest lipstick. If you like the lustre finishes, I’d really recommend you check out the limited edition MAC is Beauty collection. There are 7 other great shades.
