A Visit to Superdrug: Sleek Make-Up

Sleek is a UK brand not currently sold in Canada (and the sleekmakeup.com site doesn’t ship here). Sleek is a favourite of Youtubers Pixiwoo, so on a recent trip to England I stopped by a Superdrug to check it out.

I picked up two of their famous I-Divine eyeshadow palettes in Au Naturel and Storm (9.99 pounds each). There were some other palettes I was interested in but they didn’t carry the entire 15 palette line.

The palettes reminded me of NYX palettes: a bit hit and miss. Some of the colours are great and pigmented, but others aren’t, and some have quite a lot of fall-down.

I also picked up a single blush in Coral (5.99 pounds). The packaging is really similar to Nars blushes, which these have been compared to. All of the shades I swatched in the store were VERY pigmented; Not many seemed suited to fair skin, but would be great for darker skin tones. I like the coral shade though and I have found it long wearing.

I got one of their “Blush By 3” trios in Sugar (12.49 pounds).

Again, these are really pigmented! Sugar was one of the lightest trios they had. The first colour (on the left) is nice if used with a light hand, and the third shade (on the far right) is quite nice. The centre shade I initially thought was bronzer, but it is really shimmery and red-toned. I probably won’t use it as blush, but maybe as an eyeshadow.

Finally, I had to try a Pout Polish tinted lip balm (5.99 pounds).

Love the packaging! The lip balm has an SPF15 and a very slight coconut scent. The colour (powder pink) doesn’t really show up, but its a nice lip balm.

I do wish Sleek was available in Canada because there are lots of other products in the line that I would like to try.

England Trip: Burberry & Tom Ford

I recently traveled to England for work, and, of course, managed to get in a bit of shopping while I was there. Two make-up brands that are difficult to get in Canada are Burberry and Tom Ford. I had a chance to go to the flagship Burberry store on Regent Street in London. It was stunning. The building was originally a church, then a movie theatre, and is now a 4-story Burberry store.

The sales assistants were so nice and helpful. I was handed a complimentary glass of hot cider as soon as I walked in. I picked up a lipstick and an eyeshadow. The total was 45.00 pounds.

I am in love with both! They both have the Burberry tartan pattern and luxurious packaging. The lipstick is lovely, very moisturizing, and long-wearing and I love the colour. The eyeshadow in almond is a very wearable, medium matte brown. Its a soft, buttery type of shadow.

I also went into the House of Fraser store on Oxford Street and a very sweet and friendly Tom Ford sales assistant helped me pick out a lipstick for 36.00 pounds.

There were so many pretty colours, but eventually I decided on Spanish Pink.

“Day of the Dead” Make-up Look

Day of the Dead Makeup

For my Día de Muertos or “Day of the Dead” party, I did a sugar-skull inspired make-up look. Here’s a quick look at the products I used:

Makeup 137

  • Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer
  • MAC blackground paint pot
  • MAC smolder eye kohl
  • MAC greensmoke eyeshadow (not pictured)
  • NYX black eyeshadow single
  • Milani Color Statement lip liner in true red
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in milk
  • Ardell false lashes
  • any small, pointed brush

I actually didn’t use anything to make my skin paler – I just skipped any bronzer or blush and this is how pale I look (lol). I used eyeshadow primer all around and under my eyes where I painted the black circles. For all of the black areas, I used MAC blackground paint pot and MAC smolder eye kohl, and I set it with NYX black eyeshadow (any matte black shadow would do).

I used MAC greensmoke eyeshadow on my lid to give my eyes a bit more dimension. For the red scallop pattern and dots  I used the red lip liner outlined with the black eye kohl.

On my lips I used the milk Jumbo Eye Pencil and the MAC smolder eye kohl. I was surprised how well this stayed in place all night.

I made the flower headpiece myself using a headband, some Dollar Store fake flowers and a hot glue gun. It was super simple.
