In December, MAC had a sale of 25% off items from its permanent collection. My order only arrived two weeks ago. Living on an island in the middle of the frigid North Atlantic means that sometimes I have to wait ages for online shopping purchases to arrive, plus the holidays and some extremely stormy weather didn’t help matters. I wanted to share with you what I’d picked up at the sale. Continue reading
You know how everyone seems to be paranoid nowadays that everything we do online – everything we buy, every site we visit – is being tracked and used to carefully craft ads targeted directly at us? I’ve always pooh-poohed such notions…until I saw the MAC Prissy Princess Palette. Clearly, MAC has perfected some sort of futuristic, mind-reading technology because it has made a palette that seems to be tailor-made just for me! First of all, the packaging: Pale pink! With polka-dots! Come on, MAC, that’s just not fair. And its adorably called “Prissy Princess”? Upon first glance, I really didn’t even care what was inside. I totally wanted it. Continue reading
Over Christmas I visited my sister, and we made a little trip to the MAC store in Halifax. I love going to MAC in person because there is no MAC store where I live. We had an awesome SA who showed us some of the new MAC Lip Duos and helped us try some on. I think the duos are a neat idea. You get a lip pencil and lipstick combo for less than what it would cost to buy them each separately. My sister bought Chicory/Brick-o-la and, can you believe it, it was her first ever MAC purchase!? I decided on Cherry/Cockney. However, I noticed that I had some of the lip pencils and lipsticks from the other duos, so I’m going to do some swatches from three of the other MAC Lip Duos for you in this post as well. Continue reading
When Sephora was offering their $25 off promotion in December, in addition to picking up the Bite Beauty Champagne Discovery Lip Set I also couldn’t resist the Sephora Favourites “Give Me Some Nude Lip” Lip Kit. I had really enjoyed Sephora’s “Give Me Some Bold Lip” Lip Kit. I love the idea of getting to try out sample sizes of popular lip products for much less than it would cost to get the full size of all six items. The Give Me Some Nude Lip kit is $33 CAD, but to buy all six separately would be $84 CAD! I’ll jump right in and tell you what I thought of the six nude lip picks in the kit. Continue reading
Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great 2017. Personally, I am definitely looking forward to 2018! I had meant to get my 2017 favourites post up sooner, but I ended up being stuck in Nova Scotia for several days longer than anticipated. So many flights here were delayed and cancelled due to weather. Canadian winters! But luckily WestJet was super nice about it and even sent me $250 toward my next flight. Shout out to WestJet!
This time of year I always enjoy looking back over the past 12 months and creating a post about my yearly favourites and I really love checking out other peoples yearly favourite posts too. So, here are some of the products I have enjoyed the most in 2017. Continue reading
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you’re all having a great holidays and have been able to take some time off to relax and spend time with family and friends. I have really been enjoying my time off, especially going to holiday parties and get-togethers, and eating one of my absolute favourite foods – turkey! The other really enjoyable thing that happens in December is Sephora gives us $25 off. Tis the season for giving 🙂 Continue reading
Hi everyone! I love samples. Its a great way to discover new products. Its how I discovered my favourite mascara, the Guerlain Maxi Lash, for example. A long while back, when I was placing a Sephora order online, I selected as a sample, the Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector. I’d been using it for at least 6 months or so, and then about a month ago I used it up. I wanted to do a review as well as let you know about a less expensive dupe. Continue reading
Hi everyone! I have been seeing these “anti-haul” videos and posts everywhere lately and I think they are pretty interesting. For anyone not familiar, an “anti-haul” is when you talk about items that have recently been released that you don’t have any interest in purchasing, for various reasons. Its like the exact opposite of a wish-list. I have often found that a hyped new item will come out that I’m seeing everywhere, that everyone seems to be talking about, but it doesn’t hold any particular appeal for me. I had never thought to post about items that don’t interest me, but I have enjoyed some other anti-haul videos and posts, so I thought I would give an anti-haul a try. Continue reading
Hi everyone! I’m back with a review of some more of the Burt’s Bees lip products. I’m a big fan of this brand and I love their lip balms. Lip balm is one of the most essential items in my life! I did a previous review of some of the Burt’s Bees lip balms as well as their lipstick in Orchid Ocean. I really wanted to try out another shade of the Burt’s Bees lipstick, and while I was swatching, I also picked up two additional Burt’s Bees lip products I hadn’t tried before; the Tinted Lip Balm and the Tinted Lip Oil. Continue reading
As handy as makeup removing wipes are, I don’t use them every day. I have a whole night-time skincare routine that I normally stick to, and to remove my makeup I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O cleansing and make-up removing water with the Quo Luxury Cotton Facial Pads (which are a dupe for the pricier Shiseido Facial Cotton). But every now and then, isn’t it so convenient to have some makeup removing wipes on hand to quickly take your makeup off and cleanse when you’re just too tired to go through your entire routine? I also really like makeup removing wipes for traveling. I had a bit of a hard time finding fragrance-free makeup wipes though, so for everyone out there like me with sensitive skin, I thought I would review the two fragrance-free makeup removing wipes that I’ve tried. One has become a re-purchased fav, and one was a huge fail. Continue reading
I have to admit, I haven’t been overly enthusiastic about many new drugstore products recently, but I was excited to try Revlon’s new ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows. These came out in the U.S. about a year ago, but I’ve only recently seen them in Canada, at least in my local drugstore. Oddly they aren’t on the revlon.ca website but they are on the revlon.com site. Not all my local stores had them, but I was able to find them at Shoppers Drugmart.
If you follow my blog you know I’ve been really into my MAC Paint Pots lately (you can see my review of Groundwork and Frozen Violet). I was curious to see how the Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows compared to the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots. Are they a dupe? Continue reading
If you follow my blog, you may have seen my post about MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Groundwork which I have been loving this fall. When I was in Toronto recently, I had a looooong wait in Pearson airport, so I did what any normal, makeup obsessed person would do and headed straight to MAC to swatch some Paint Pots. I love a MAC in an airport – what an amazing idea! There were several gorgeous Paint Pots I liked. Two were not in stock – Camel Coat and Tailor Grey (both in the land of matte, taupey goodness). The shade they did have in stock was Frozen Violet. Continue reading
The last time I was in Sephora, I was waiting in the check-out line surrounded by shiny, tempting, mini-sized products and of course the next thing I knew, some of them *mysteriously* ended up in my basket. They get me every time. I can never resist the lure of all of the adorable miniatures and add-ons in the Sephora line. Partly, I love anything miniature, but I also love that you can often sample higher-end products this way at a lower price. Continue reading
I love seeing what people chose to pick up at Sephora’s 20% off fall sale. I often use the sale to finally purchase an expensive item on my wish-list or to try out some new products. This year, however, I was totally practical. I decided to save money by restocking some of my staples. I ordered five items that are products that I use everyday. Continue reading
I haven’t been traveling as much this year, but a few weeks ago I was in Toronto and made it to a Sephora in-person and while there, I spotted the Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Bold Lip kit. I really like these Sephora favorites type of kits that let you sample several best-sellers at a great price, but I find they usually sell out too quickly. So I was pretty pumped to get to try out the bold lip favs. I’m really into bold lip shades right now. I think it must be a fall weather thing. Continue reading
Burt’s Bees is a pretty adorable brand. I have been a long-time fan of their Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme. I love that they use 99-100% natural ingredients, and their bee and honeycomb themed packaging is irresistible. I mean, who doesn’t love bees? I also really love their #BringBacktheBees campaign, started last year, to raise awareness about the declining bee population and to restore bee habitat.
When we moved from my tiny place into our current house, there was one serious downside…I could never find any lip balm! I like to have at least one in every room (but I’m totally *not* addicted or anything). The solution? I headed to the drugstore to buy a bunch of extra lip balms to have on hand. I had completely used up an entire Burt’s Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil, and I knew I wanted me some more Burt’s Bees balms. Continue reading
Hi everyone! After being away from blogging for a long time, I’m finally feeling motivated and inspired to return to posting. Its been a stressful fall, and I have been very distracted with work and financial and personal issues. As I mentioned in my last post, we’d been busy moving into and renovating our new house and also ran into a major, unexpected issue with the house I was selling. Having two mortgages for much, much longer than planned has meant there has been very little makeup or any other kind of shopping so I haven’t had any cool new beauty finds to blog about. Adulting can really suck. The good news is, the City has finally finished construction and I have a new close date for the sale of the house! Wa-hoo!
I did buy one new thing this fall, a MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Groundwork, and I have been pretty much obsessed with it as you can tell from how much I’ve used. Continue reading
I have been dying to try the new Bite Beauty The Lip Pencil since it first came out. I am already a fan of the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masks, Amuse Bouche Lipsticks, and the Whipped Cherry Fruit Scrub. So knowing that they now also made a lip liner kinda made my life complete. The Canadian brand is known for its lip products made from natural, organic, food-grade ingredients that are “good enough to eat.” They also have really unique shades. I can’t wait for the next time I’m in Toronto, so I can visit the Bite Beauty Lip Lab where you can create your own custom or bespoke lipsticks. It looks so fun! Continue reading
As soon as I saw this new lip product from Benefit, I knew I had to try it. Benefit is one of the cutest, retro-inspired brands and they have the greatest packaging and iconic product names. Some of their products can be a bit gimmicky but they are never boring! Their Benefit They’re Real! Double the Lip Beyond Sexy Lipstick & Liner in One was just too interesting to pass up. Benefit bills it as “This lip liner & lipstick in one features a Custom Teardrop Tip that grabs and defines your lip line and fills in lips with complementing colour for the appearance of volume and dimension.” I had never seen a built in, separate lip liner colour in a lipstick before. Visually, these Double the Lip two-tone lipsticks were irresistible. Continue reading
I have not been very good at getting blog posts out lately. I am moving into a new house in less than 7 days, so I have been super busy with packing up my current house and also preparing it for sale. Its so much work! But I’m very excited about moving. I have all kinds of ideas for the new house and think I’d like to share some of the renovating, decorating, and organizing ideas I have planned on my blog. Would you like to see that? Please leave me a comment if you’d be interested in some DIY retro-inspired home decorating type of posts.
In all of the chaos, I still have found time to get some new eye shadows from MAC. This is a quick post about four of the MAC eye shadow singles I’ve been enjoying recently. Continue reading
Way back in 2014 (that seems so crazy long ago!) I did a post on my skincare routine for sensitive, acne-prone skin. I thought it was about time to do an update 🙂 As I am getting older, my skin is changing. I’m finding it much drier, and my breakouts are more hormonal, which means that there’s not a lot that topical treatments can do (more on that later). Nearly three years later, some of my skincare products are the same, some I have since stopped using, and I’ve also introduced a few new products. I sometimes find it difficult to get information about products that are fragrance-free or good for sensitive skin, so I hope this helps others out there! Continue reading
I love when MAC comes out with a new LE collection. I always check it out, although I don’t necessarily always order anything. There was just something about the Work it Out collection that was calling my name. I think, primarily, it was all of the lustre finish lipsticks (my fav!), but then there were just so many other cool new things I wanted to try. I also absolutely love this packaging that is a little bit 80s but also a little bit retro 1950s/1960s too. Black and white stars and checkerboards combined with bright, neon pinks, oranges, blues and greens!? Swoon. Continue reading
As many of my readers will know, I am not the hugest fan of matte lip products. My ideal type of lippie is a MAC lipstick in the lustre finish (as evidenced by my ample lustre collection), which is more balmy, shiny and sheer. I received this Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick from a thoughtful friend who shares my love of makeup. I was apprehensive. I had tried on the Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick (the one in the squeeze tube) at Sephora. After wearing it as I shopped along my merry way for 10 or 15 minutes, my lips felt like they’d had all of the moisture sucked right out of them! I removed it before I even made it to the checkout line and applied copious amounts of my fav Blistex Daily Conditioning Treatment. Would the newer Melted Matte be better or even worse? Continue reading
Its always a bummer to have to do a less than positive review, but a gal has to be honest, right? With a Sephora gift card I received over Christmas, I wanted to try out a new product. I love using a gift card to splurge on something totally new. I’m already a huge fan of the Laura Mercier Secret Concealer and have repurchased it multiple times. I like to use it under my eyes and pair it with a highlighting or illuminating type of concealer like the L’oreal Magic Lumi. I had the $38.00 CAD Laura Mercier Candleglow Concealer and Highlighter on my wish list for a while. Advertised as a “versatile concealer and highlighter for the undereye area and the face that provides sheer coverage with a soft, radiant finish” I thought this would be a great product for creating some luminous glowiness under my eyes.
